Obituary : Georgiann Sue “Cookie” (Schaaf) Clark, age 80, passed away at the Assured Assisted Living Memory Care Home in Centennial, CO on July 25, 2022 from Alzheimer’s Disease.

Cookie was born March 15, 1942 in Eau Claire, WI. Her parents were Gerald Schaaf and Juanita (Budrow) Schaaf. She has one brother, John Schaaf, of Eau Claire. She is married to Kirk B. Clark, also originally of Eau Claire, now living in Centennial, CO. They have two sons: Kevin Clark of Centennial, CO, and Scott Clark, of Santa Fe, TX.

Cookie Clark lived a wonderful life as a daughter, a sister, an Air Force fighter pilot’s wife, a mother, a teacher, a grandmother, a great-grandmother, a cousin, an aunt, and a friend. Her life has been filled with love and laughter, education, adventure, and fun.

Cookie was born and raised in Eau Claire, WI, and she was always an Eau Claire girl. She lived in a house on Half Moon Lake near Carson Park where she was able to watch the great baseball player Hank Aaron play for the minor league Eau Claire Bears, a farm club for the Boston Braves, in 1952. Cookie’s brother John is a huge sports fan, and she shares her love of sports with him and her whole family.

From an early age, Cookie always knew she wanted to be a teacher. As a child, she would line up her dolls in rows, give each one a book and proceed to teach class every day. After raising her family, Cookie fulfilled her dream of becoming a teacher. She taught Kindergarten and Second Grade at Jewell Elementary School in Aurora, CO for 20 years before retiring in 2000.

Cookie loved growing up in Eau Claire. She enjoyed figure skating on Half Moon Lake during the winters. She learned to swim at the Eau Claire YMCA, and she attended the YMCA’s Camp Manitou in the summers.

Cookie has a strong Christian faith that was nurtured at Grace Lutheran Church in Eau Claire. She was baptized, confirmed, and married at Grace Lutheran. She enjoyed attending church and singing in the choir wherever she happened to live at the time. While living in Aurora, CO, she was active at Faith Presbyterian Church. She sang in the choir for many years and served as a Deacon.

Cookie attended Eau Claire Memorial High School (Class of 1960). She enjoyed high school and was a cheerleader during her senior year.

In high school, Cookie met the man she would eventually marry, Kirk B. Clark. Kirk played football and baseball in high school.

After high school, Kirk went off to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. After Kirk graduated from the Academy, these two high school sweethearts would marry on June 30, 1962, at Grace Lutheran Church in Eau Claire. This was the start of Cookie’s next big adventure as the wife of a fighter pilot and the mother of two boys.

Cookie and Kirk have two sons, Kevin, and Scott. Kevin and his wife Cheryl (Lesh) live in Centennial, CO. Scott and his wife Laura (Cullen) live in Sante Fe, TX. Cookie has five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Kevin and Cheryl have three sons: Andrew Clark, Matthew Clark, and Aaron Clark. They live in the Denver, CO, metro area. Scott and Laura have two daughters: Jordan Rusk (Brad) and Connor Jennings (Mitchell). Jordan and Brad have three children: two boys, Lincoln Rusk, and Jackson Rusk, and one girl, Madison Rusk. All of Scott and Laura’s children and grandchildren live in the Houston, TX metro area.

Mom always put family first. To Kevin and Scott, she was absolutely the best Mom ever! She was a source of unconditional love. She always made life a fun adventure. She was our first and best teacher. She was the strength and the glue that held our family together as we moved all over the country and around the world since my Dad was a fighter pilot in the Air Force and then a pilot with Western and Delta Airlines.

Since Dad was gone about half the time flying for the Air Force and for the airlines, Mom was a single Mom for much of the time, holding down the fort and raising us kids. She could do it all, and she did it with style and grace.

While Kirk was in the Air Force, and flying as an airline pilot, Cookie and the family were stationed in Phoenix, AZ; Royal Air Force Base Lakenheath, England; Seattle, WA; Anchorage, AK; Tucson, AZ; Minneapolis, MN and Denver, CO. Mom was always able to make a wonderful, loving home for us wherever we were living.

Mom earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Colorado Women’s College in 1981 and then began a twenty year teaching career. She taught Kindergarten and Second Grade at Jewell Elementary School in Aurora, CO and retired in 2000. Along the way she earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Lesley College, MA.

Kevin and Scott agree that Cookie was a great Mom. She made everything fun. She took us on many adventures including the zoo, museums, amusement parks, movies, putt-putt golfing, swimming, and always took us to the library.

Cookie may have started her career as a cheerleader in high school, but she was a cheerleader by nature and a cheerleader in life. To Scott and Kevin, she was our greatest cheerleader, attending our sporting events in little league, youth soccer, youth basketball, and high school soccer and basketball. She supported her children and grandchildren in all their activities including sports (soccer, basketball, lacrosse) and the arts (piano, theatre, dance). She cheered us all on in every endeavor including life.  For example, she loved Harry Potter books and always took her grandson Andrew to The Tattered Cover bookstore for the release parties when a new Harry Potter book would come out. She attended hundreds of soccer games to watch Kevin, Scott, Aaron, and Andrew compete. She attended horse riding events and Special Olympics for Matthew. She supported Jordan in her dance activities and competitions including dancing in Texas, a two-week dance workshop in Boulder, CO, and dance performances in New York and Boston. Cookie also attended Connor’s dance performances in Texas and supported Connor in her Future Farmers of America activities and competitions. Cookie supported both Jordan and Connor in their many educational and academic efforts and achievements.

In addition to cheering for her family in all their activities, she loved cheering for her home state teams of the Green Bay Packers and the University of Wisconsin Badgers. She cheered for all the Air Force Academy teams and would often attend Air Force football games with Kirk. She also enjoyed rooting for all the Colorado professional sports teams including the Broncos, the Avalanche, the Nuggets and the Rockies.

Mom was very competitive, and she enjoyed playing games of all kinds: tennis, racquetball, croquet, ping-pong, card games, and board games. She definitely knew how to have fun!

The last few years of Cookie’s life have been difficult because she had Alzheimer’s Disease. Thankfully, she knew her family right to the end and Kevin was able to be with her when she died peacefully in her bed on July 25, 2022.

Cookie’s most lasting legacy is the gift of love. She was a source of unconditional love to her family and especially to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Everyone that got to know her loved her because she loved them. She offered that profound gift of love to everyone including all the students she taught over those twenty years.

Cookie was a happy, loving person who loved helping others, teaching children, and cheering them on so that they can be the best person they can be and achieve their goals in life.

Much like her name, Cookie, she was just plain sweet and wonderful. Not to mention that she made some of the best chocolate chip cookies on the planet!

We love you Mom! You will be missed. We look forward to eating some of your chocolate chip cookies again when we see you in heaven.

Cookie is survived by her husband Kirk Clark of Centennial, CO; her sons Kevin Clark (Cheryl) of Centennial, CO and Scott Clark (Laura) of Santa Fe, TX; her grandsons Andrew Clark, Matthew Clark, and Aaron Clark of Denver, CO; her granddaughters Jordan Rusk (Brad) and Connor Jennings (Mitchell) of Houston, TX; her great-grandchildren Lincoln Rusk, Jackson Rusk, and Madison Rusk of Houston, TX; her brother John Schaaf (Nancy) of Eau Claire, WI; her niece Sara (Schaaf) Jappinen (husband Mark) of Oconomowoc, WI, and additional extended family members.

Cookie was preceded in death by her parents Gerald Schaaf and Juanita (Budrow) Schaaf; and her nephew Mark Schaaf.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date for family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to the Eau Claire YMCA. To make a gift, please call Suzie Slota, Director of Mission Advancement, at 715-839-4631 or email her at sslota@ymca-cv.org   To find out more about the great work of the Eau Claire YMCA in the community, please view their website at YMCA of the Chippewa Valley at www.ymca-cv.org

Wayne Ward tragically killed in St. Louis County 3-vehicle accident

Wednesday morning crash at Highway 194 and Canosia

SOLWAY TOWNSHIP, MN, (July 27, 2022) - The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating a three-vehicle collision Wednesday morning in St. Louis County that claimed the life of a Madeira Beach, Fla. man.

The collision happened at around 11 a.m. in Solway Township.

According to an MSP crash report, a 2002 Cadilac Deville was eastbound on State Highway 194. A 2021 Toyota RAV4 was approaching Canosia Road and was stopped behind another vehicle waiting to turn south onto Canosia. At the same time, a 2013 Suburu Crosstrek was also westbound approaching Canosia.

The driver of the Subaru couldn't stop in time behind the Toyota and swerved into oncoming traffic. The Subaru's right front struck the left rear of the Toyota. The Suburu overturned into the eastbound lanes of traffic, striking the Cadillac top and drivers-side front. The Cadillac came to final rest in the south ditch of the highway. The Subaru landed in the eastbound lane on its roof. The Toyota was pushed to the shoulder of the westbound side of the highway.

The driver of the Cadillac, 87-year-old Wayne Gene Ward of Florida, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office.

The Subaru driver, Ethan Asbjorn Neidviecky, age 24, of Hermantown, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to St. Luke's Hospital.

No other injuries were reported in the crash.

………………………………………………….

Dear NWA Colleagues,

I received information this morning that Wayne Ward died in a three car auto

accident in McGregor, Minnesota. Wayne was 87 years old and was hired in

1966 after active service with the Air Force.

I worked a lot with Wayne in NWA Flight Training and on the line. Thanks for

those good years Wayne.

With genuine sadness,

Bill Day

..........................   Wayne Gene Ward (rnpa.org)

Captain Wayne Ward, age 87, died unexpectedly in a Minnesota automobile accident on July 27, 2022. Wayne was born on July 3, 1935, to Leslie and Ellen Ward in Vandalia, Illinois, their only child.

With an agriculture oriented rural Illinois upbringing, Wayne knew hard farm work and early in life developed a strong work ethic. He was a good high school student and noteworthy basketball player. After high school Wayne headed south to Carbondale, IL where he earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture at Southern Illinois University (SIU). It is noteworthy that Wayne paid his own way through college by doing seasonal farm work. While enrolled at SIU Wayne participated in USAF ROTC. Upon college graduation in the spring of 1957, he was commissioned a 2/Lt. in the Air Force Reserve.

Fresh out of college, Wayne reported to Texas for USAF pilot training. He enjoyed flying jet trainers, but along the way acquired a unique interest in specialized helicopter training. After earning his USAF pilot rating Wayne reported to Stead AFB, Nevada for 70 hours of specialized helicopter training in the H-19 Sikorsky Chickasaw as well as advanced training in the Piasecki H-21 Shawnee. Thereafter Wayne flew a variety of helicopters with USAF units at McChord AFB and Scott AFB, often flying the H-21 Shawnee, the USAF workhorse. Wayne also served a tour in France, albeit his final active-duty assignment was at Scott AFB, IL. His military connection was separated but not severed.

Throughout his military and airline career Wayne’s wife Rita was at his side. Wayne and Rita were married immediately after college graduation and in time they had two daughters, Lori (Krezowsky) and Debra (Ahrenholz). Between the two daughters seven grandchildren would be born and now great-grandchildren abound.

After ten years of active USAF service Wayne began employment with Northwest Airlines on December 05, 1966. After initial hire ground school Wayne qualified as a second officer on the Boeing 727. He stayed in this crew position for several years, working in flight training as a second officer instructor. These were turbulent labor years at NWA and Wayne sought the security of military flying as a backup to his airline career. The MSP area lacked any USAF helicopter units, but they abounded with the Army reserve components. Wayne resigned his USAFR commission and took a Warrant grade assignment with the Minnesota Army National Guard. Service as a helicopter pilot with the Minnesota Guard supplemented his NWA career for another decade.

Back at NWA, Wayne upgraded to copilot on the Boeing 727, DC-10 and Boeing 747 Classic. In time he upgraded to captain on these aircraft and served two years flying from the NWA Honolulu base. Wayne did upgrade to the Boeing 747/400 for his final base assignment in Detroit. Wayne retired from NWA in July, 1995.

Not unlike other retired NWA pilots, Wayne and Rita became seasonal retirees with quarters in Maderia Beach, Florida and McGregor, Minnesota. Wayne remained a faithful supporter of their grandchildren’s games and school programs. In addition, he fell into a service role via Optimist Clubs in Minnesota and Florida.

Wayne Ward is survived by his wife Rita; daughters Lori and Debra, seven grandchildren and recent great grandchildren. His internment will be at Arlington National Cemetery, at 1400 hours on October 3, 2022.

Wayne you were forged of tough stock, strong, reliable, and of a kind heart. We were privileged to know you.

   (Bill Day)

Obituary : WILLIAM SINGLETARY

William Warren Singletary, Jr. passed away on July 20th, 2022 at the age of 84. He was surrounded by his family. He was known as William for serious occasions, Bill for personal ones, and back home in Rowland, North Carolina he was Billy. He was born and raised in Rowland, NC the oldest of 5 siblings. He is survived by his sister Diane Bethea of Dublin GA, brother Thomas Worth Singletary of Seven Lakes West, NC, sister Karen Brown of Boiling Springs, SC, and sister Kris Bischoff of Guilford, IN. As a child he helped his Dad working in the family grocery store.

He attended 2 years at NC State, when he decided that he needed a change and considered the Air Force. Considering he had never been in an airplane before he used all his money and found a farmer to take him in a crop duster to assure he didn't get airsick. Well he passed and went on to join the Air Force. Shortly after, he needed a date to go to the Air Force Ball and his sister Karen set him up with her best friend, Mary Alice Hall (dec.1989). They were married in 1965 in Harrells, NC. He flew B-52's in the Vietnam War, and earned the rank of Captain. After he retired from the Air Force, he flew for Delta Airlines for 30 years. With Mary, he had 3 children. Della Rae Married to Edward Joseph Wirtz from Los Angeles, CA. They have 2 children Taylor Mary, and Lofton Charles. Warren Hall married to Rhonda Singletary from Sugar Hill, GA. They have 2 children Grace Elizabeth, and Carly Rae. Leah Margaret married to Robert Wayne Graves from Topsail Beach, NC. They have 4 children Chandler Myles, Mary Margaret, Luke Warren, and Hayla Alice. After Mary Alice passed, Bill was lucky enough to marry another amazing lady, Betty Jo Singletary. She has 4 children and 3 granddaughters. Kent Cale (dec.1985), Karen Turner, Kelly Cale, and Kip Cale all of Cumming, Ga. Granddaughters Sara Turner, Kara Tuthill, and Tara Walker.

Bill had an amazing sense of humor, and if you were around him long you would for sure be laughing. He loved to travel and visited every state as well as 55 countries. He loved his family fiercely. Yearly, we would take a family vacation to Topsail Beach, NC. He loved walking on the beach, but in his later years, he enjoyed sitting on the balcony watching his family, smoking a cigar. He loved food, and took great pleasure knowing what the next meal would be. He was an avid reader and had an extensive library in his home with all of his classics. His favorites were anything pertaining to history. He was always learning, and truly was the smartest person we have ever known. His last moments he was surrounded by family and lots of love, and as if on cue a rainbow, thunderstorm, male and female cardinal, and a hooting owl. Well done Papa, rest easy.

There will be a celebration of his life at a later date.

.........................   John Pennington (rnpa.org)

Captain John Pennington, age 88, died July 08, 2022, after struggling with Alzheimer’s Disease since 2017. John was born to Earnest and Ruth Pennington on November 14, 1933, in Independence, Missouri. He had one sibling, a younger sister Molly.

Obit Photo John Pennington 1 3John was a good high school student and a skilled athlete. After high school he attended college in Iowa, enrolling in a two-year Associate Degree program. This academic work qualified him to apply for the US Air Force Aviation Cadet Pilot Training program. The Aviation Cadet program became John’s ticket to a future in the cockpit. Upon completing Undergraduate Pilot Training John was awarded his silver wings and passed to Tinker AFB, OK for training in the C-124 Globemaster. His final (PCS) assignment was to the 62nd Troop Carrier Wing (Heavy) at McChord AFB, WA.

For the next four years John flew as copilot and Aircraft Commander in the incredibly complex Globemaster, carrying out the far-reaching troop carrier and cargo special missions assigned at that time to the 62nd and 63rd Troop Carrier Wings. His military flying was excellent preparation for the airline career to follow.Obit Photo John Pennington 2

When seeking airline employment, Northwest Airlines was a natural option for an aviator stationed in Tacoma, WA. John began his NWA employment on April 04, 1959. His early career assignments included the DC-4, DC-6, DC-7, Boeing 727, and the Boeing 707 series. The DC-10 was a favorite for John and preceded his time flying the Boeing 747 Classic. John retired on the 747 Classic.

Those of us who were privileged to fly with John would describe him as a pleasant and helpful captain, a total gentleman, and a fellow with a witty sense of humor.

John had three children from his first marriage: Janet, Jody and Jim who died in June, 2020. His enduring marriage with Karen began Jan.08, 1982, and lasted 40 years. Karen brought two sons into the marriage: Kevin and Jim Parsons. The new extended family bonded quickly. In addition to their family, John and Karen enjoyed golf, tennis, playing bridge, boating, John’s singing skills, and his lighted footed dancing – required to marry Karen. Boating came along with living on Bainbridge Island. John and Karen owned a 42’ Grand Banks, ‘The Cavak’ and thoroughly enjoyed boating and cruising.

Among their litany of travel destinations, John and Karen especially enjoyed a safari in Kenya and Tanzania.

During John’s retirement years he and Karen spent their summers at Fletcher Bay on Bainbridge Island, WA and winters in Palm Springs, CA. John became a volunteer docent at the Air Museum at Palm Springs. He thoroughly enjoyed this until Alzheimer’s induced a loss of vocabulary.

John is survived by his wife of 40 years Karen; his daughters Janet and Jody; and sons Kevin and Jim.

Those of us who shared a cockpit with John are grateful for his tutelage and warm personality. He will be greatly missed.
