NWA Capt. Merle Charles Eglet

Obituary : Capt. Merle C. Eglet  Sept. 2023   see  https://obituaries.seattletimes.com/obituary/merle-skip-eglet-1088886925

Merle "Skip" Eglet finished his layover on this earth with blue skies and no regrets on September 25, 2023 in Nashville, TN. Semper Fidelis.

He was born in North Dakota on June 7, 1935 to Charles and Nette Eglet. Early in life, the family moved to Zillah, WA to escape the Great Depression. Skip attended Orchardvale Elementary and Zillah High Schools. He earned valedictorian honors at all levels.

After studying in the pharmacy program at WSU, Skip joined the Naval Aviation Cadet program. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps and earned his wings as a Naval Aviator. His tour of active duty began at El Toro, CA, with deployments to Arizona, Nevada, and the aircraft carrier CVA-34 Oriskany. While on active duty, Skip flew numerous aircraft, most notably the famed F4U Corsair and the venerable F8U Crusader. Upon leaving active duty, he joined the Fleet Marine Forces Reserve and continued for 13 years.

During his time in the reserves, Skip began pursuing a career in commercial aviation. Skip was ultimately hired by Northwest Airlines in the spring of 1964 and retired there more than 31 years later. During his career at NWA, Skip flew everything from the DC-6 to the DC-10 and retired flying the iconic Boeing 747.

Over the course of his 31-years, Skip served in several roles as an appointed or elected officer in the Airline Pilots Association (ALPA). This ultimately led to Skip being nominated and elected Deputy President of The International Federation of Airline Pilots Associations (IFALPA). He served in this office during his final years prior to retirement. Skip always noted how the support of his fellow pilots at NWA and ALPA greatly aided his ability to represent flight crews around the world to various national governments and regulating bodies.

It was during his time with NWA that Skip met Kathy Parat who would become the love of his life. Throughout their marriage, they strived to build a robust, yet practical life with homes in Kirkland and Whidbey Island, Washington surrounded by the tranquility of beautiful sunsets and peaceful water. From their earliest time together in the airline industry until their retirement, the two enjoyed laughter with friends, travel and exploration abroad, and time spent with their family.

Throughout his life, Skip was an ardent supporter of his Washington State Cougars, various sports—especially high school as well as numerous historical organizations. His favorite moments were always spent with family traveling or beachside on his beloved Whidbey Island.

Skip is survived by his wife, Kathy of Franklin, TN; his brothers Tony, Dick and Steve, and his sister Paula Thomas; his son Robert and wife Tracy; his daughter Brooke Boling and husband Gregg; grandsons Keegan and Blake Eglet and granddaughter Jordan Eglet; granddaughter Parker Boling and grandson Thatcher Boling; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will be hosting a private Celebration of Life in his home state of Washington. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to The Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation or the Wounded Warrior Project.

 *Stanley Samuel Hayden Jr.

1944-2023, age 78

Oh Captain, My Captain, your journey has come to an end. Your life was filled with stories that only a captain could have.

Stanley, or “Lee” to his longtime friends, and Tan Tan to his grandkids, grew up in Miami, Florida. He attended a private high school and, upon graduation, went to college in Wisconsin. He left college to pursue a career in aviation. Lee’s passion for flying was unrivaled, and in 1967 he started his career with Northeast, which merged with Delta Airlines in 1972. He was blessed to have a lifetime career filled with new places, new people and new things to discover.

He was a legend at Delta Airlines and his reputation preceded him. On the flight deck he was a consummate aviator and employee, but once his duties were discharged, he would trade in his captain’s hat for a vintage aviator’s cap and a kamikaze scarf. He donned other hats as well, including a Sherlock Holmes cap, a pith helmet, and even a tea hat for the Kentucky Derby. He was bold and people loved him for it.

He made lifelong friendships in and out of the cockpit. His sense of humor was legendary  and contagious. He had many tales to share of places he’d explored and people he’d met, and he didn’t shy away from poking fun at himself or others which made for wonderful stories. Lee had a heart for poetry and would recite his favorites with such poise that many a man could be seen wiping a tear. He never spent a moment in theatre, but he carried a spotlight wherever he went. He was a man of wonderful passion, bigger than life itself.

When Lee was not captain in the air, he was captain of his boat. His time off was spent in his beloved keys on his Willy Roberts flats boat, always trying to catch that darned elusive bonefish. He knew the flats around Islamorada clear to Flamingo like the back of his hand.

For Lee, life was quieter and peaceful on the water. It was his Sunday service.

Lee was an amazing home chef. His motto was if you want to eat well, you have to know how to cook well. He treated his friends and loved ones to many a fine meal as those who were lucky enough to share his table would attest. Besides fine food, he was a connoisseur of cigars, wine, Irish whiskey, and a lover of McChrystal’s snuff. And if you’d spent any time around Lee, you’d know what McChrystal’s is.

Tan Tan met his match and married Becki on Oct. 30, 1995 in the Keys under the big oak tree behind his house. Together they made a life filled with travel and cruising. They visited places and ports that people only dream of. They enjoyed playing cards and rooting for University of Tennessee’s football team, which was his wife Becki’s alma mater (“Go Vols!”). They spent countless hours boating and enjoying the sandbar in the back yard. He adored Becki to his last breath. His life was complete because of her.

Lee was married previously and had a daughter, Mindy, and a son, Skip. He gave his children a lifetime of memories filled with fishing, travel and epic parties, but most importantly a love for quiet reflection on the water.

He loved life, his family and his friends and was loved in return. He will be missed.

Obituary of Eugene Juarez

On Thursday, September 7th, 2023, Eugene Juarez (Geno) passed away suddenly at his home in Savage, MN. at the age of 90 after his battle with Alzheimer's.

Preceeded in death by mother Catalina, father Pedro and 13 siblings.

Survived by ex-wife Jane Juarez; children Patricia (Iverson), Eugene Jr.; Michael, Christina, Korina (Schultz) and Renita; 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Geno was born in Fullerton, California, grew up in Ventura, California. Then after graduating from high school he enlisted in the Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colorado. However, he learned to fly at Luke Air Force base outside of Phoenix, AZ. After a short stint in the Air Force, he joined North Central Airlines in 1961 as a commercial airline pilot and continued flying for Republic Airlines and then Northwest Airlines retiring as a 727 captain in 1993 after 32 years of flying passenger jets. Dad would often say to us kids that his job was not work, because he loved flying and having the control of such an important responsibility of getting his passengers to and from their destinations, I (Pattie) was lucky to have been a passenger on his flights a few times! Geno was also active as an airman in the Minnesota Air National Guard flying C130s on special training missions around the globe. There were many times when he would return from his trips to Hawaii with delicious, fresh pineapple, he would most often bring us kids something special from his world travels. He retired as Lt. Colonel.

In retirement, Geno spent his winters as a snowbird in Phoenix, Arizona while spending summers in Burnsville, Minnesota. In addition to Phoenix during the winter, he would venture up to Nevada and go golfing with his buddies at one of his favorite courses, the Oasis Golf Club in Mesquite Nevada. He also would go to warmer climates like Aruba and Puerto Vallarta where Mark & I were fortunate enough to join them twice, once to celebrate his 80th birthday, another time stayed with Geno & Vicky which they vacationed with Dad & Carol (his lady) several times through out the years. One of his other passions in retirement was being the owner of racehorses that ran not only at Canterbury Downs in the Twin Cities but other tracks around the country.

Dad/Geno will be surely missed, we are grateful for the time we had with him, we will miss all of his stories of the past, he was a great story teller.

A celebration of life will be held at The American Legion on Friday October 6th at 2pm. 14521 Granada Dr., Apple Valley, MN. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association

David Munzell Obituary

David Munzell, 81, of Brentwood, Tennessee passed away on September 6, 2023 after leading a life full of family and flying.

David was born on December 7, 1941 (Pearl Harbor Day) in Springfield, Missouri, to Tony and Obie Munzell. He spent most of his childhood in Jefferson City, Missouri, and graduated in 1959 from Jefferson City High School, where he was featured on trombone in the marching band.

David graduated from the University of Illinois in 1963 and joined the Navy, reaching the rank of lieutenant as a pilot flying C-130’s in a number of roles, including transport flights during the war in Vietnam. In 1968, he served as Plane Commander of Navy Hurricane Hunters Crew 4 – the aircrews that fly into major storms to collect weather data.

After proudly serving his country for five years, David began a distinguished career with Delta Air Lines in November 1968, retiring as captain in 1997. During that time, he was based in New Orleans and lived in and around Slidell, Louisiana.

In retirement, David enjoyed taking road trips throughout Louisiana and cross country with his “biker gang” on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle or his Ural motorcycle. He also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Following Hurricane Katrina, he lived in Grand Prairie, Texas, and for the past several years in the Nashville area.

David is survived by his wife of 50 years, Meredith Munzell; his children, Laurie Brooks of Franklin, Tennessee, Brian (Amy) Kyhos of Chicago, and Katy (Connor) Kerr of Chicago;  six grandchildren: David Brooks, Dillon Brooks, Clayton Kyhos, Isla Kerr, Finn Kerr and Scarlett Kerr; and his brother, Michael Munzell (Greg Sanborn), of Concord, California. He is preceded in death by his son-in-law, Brian Brooks, and the many dogs he loved and cared for throughout his life.

A celebration of David’s life will be held at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home, 3009 Columbia Ave., Franklin, Tennessee, on September 23, at 3:00 p.m. A family visitation will begin one hour before the service.
