Dale Carman Obituary

Dale E. Carman, 89, "darlin' husband" of 32 years to Louise, passed away on June 12 2024, in Stony Brook, New York. He was born on June 13, 1934, on a farm in Yarmouth, Iowa, son of the late James and Eva (nee Fischer) Carman.

Dale, a United States Air Force Veteran, served 10 years actively and 30 years in the Reserve. He received various honors, which included the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Air Force Longevity Award with one Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster (OLC). Dale retired at the rank of Major.

Finding immense fulfillment and joy in flying, Dale went on to join the upper echelon of aviation, becoming a Pan Am Pilot, where he was a "Sky God" for 26 years (1965-1991). After their demise, he continued his piloting career with Delta Airlines until his retirement in 2001.

His career granted him the opportunity to fulfill his love of traveling the world, taking him through six continents. Though he traveled far and wide, Alaska held a special place in his heart. The scenery, wildlife, and good fishing brought him back year after year.

When he wasn't enjoying walks to watch the sunset with his wife and dogs, Taylor and the late Sawyer, Dale was keeping busy by reading, doing the daily crossword puzzle, sudokus, and playing card games with his family, whom he loved very dearly.

Dale is survived by his wife Louise, his children Andra Renee Carman and Michael Carman, his siblings Marie Basset (Greg), James Carman (Neoma), many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews whom he adored. Obituary Joseph Maricelli

Joseph Marion Maricelli, 84, of Merryville, LA, passed from this life on Thursday, June 13, 2024.

Joe Maricelli was born to Ray and Florence Maricelli in Merryville, LA. He graduated from Merryville High School in 1957. He was awarded a football scholarship to Northwestern State College (now NSU) in Natchitoches, LA. He enrolled at NSC where he played football in the positions of fullback and halfback and joined ROTC.  He was named All Gulf States Conference team while at NSC.  He married Rosalind Jeans in July 1959. They had their first child, Neal, in April 1960. Their second child, Yvonne, was born in April 1962. Joe graduated from NSC with a bachelor’s degree in 1962. Despite being recruited by the Canadian Football League, Joe joined the Army as an entry-level officer and was sent to Ft. Benning, Georgia for basic training.  While at Ft. Benning, Joe played for the Ft. Benning Doughboys, helping them win their conference championship in 1962.  On a fluke, a friend asked him to take the test to be a pilot in the Army; he passed the test and was transferred to Ft. Rucker, Alabama for flight training. While at Ft. Rucker, Joe and Rosalind had their third child, Christine, in June 1964.

Joe was then stationed in Augsburg, Germany, where the family lived while Joe was working with the Army, flying around Europe.

When Joe was sent to Vietnam by the Army, the rest of the family returned to the States and resided in Port Arthur, Texas awaiting his safe return. While in Vietnam, Joe piloted both the DHC-2 Beaver and DHC-3 Otter, single engine planes used to carry personnel and supplies. After leaving the Army in 1967, Joe applied to Northwest Airlines as a pilot. Joe and the family lived in Minnesota until 1972, when they moved back to Louisiana and started a homestead. Joe continued to be employed with NWA for 32 years before retiring in 1999 as a Captain on a 747.  During his employment with NWA, Joe traveled worldwide, mostly to the Orient. While in Thailand, Joe was introduced to an orphanage which was run by the local Church of Christ. He continued to visit the orphanage when he traveled to Thailand. The Lone Pine Church of Christ still provides support for this orphanage.

Following retirement, Joe continued flying every opportunity. He joined the Civil Air Patrol in Lake Charles, for which he flew for almost ten (10) years.  During the aftermath of Hurricane Katrine, Joe logged in more than 25 flying hours surveying the catastrophic damages of cities, communities and towns.  Joe continued working his homestead, growing vegetables, harvesting hay and maintaining livestock. Joe loved farming and growing corn, tomatoes and watermelons.

Joe was a wonderful husband and father. He worked hard at being a good Christian, as he believed in God and was determined to go to Heaven.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of sixty-four years, Rosalind Jeans Maricelli of Merryville, LA; daughters, Sara Yvonne Grant and Mark of Natchitoches, LA, Christine Midkiff and David of Many, LA; grandchildren, Laura Wolf and Derek. Jamie Perez and Rolando, Ryker Grant, Henry Grant and Charlie, Ian Grant; great grandchildren, Micheal Grant, Willow Grant, Zoey Grant, Cameron Wolf and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.

Pallbearers will be Ryker Grant, Henry Grant, Ian Grant, David Midkiff, Mark Grant, Warren Cooley, Derek Wolf. Burial will follow at Meadows Cemetery in Merryville, LA.

Arthur Huckabee Obituary

Cumming, Georgia - With much sadness, the family of Arthur Glenn Huckabee announces that following a lengthy illness, he passed away on May 8, 2024, at home with his wife Rochelle by his side. Art was born in Greensboro, NC on December 1, 1959, to Robert C and Doris G Huckabee. He grew up in Charlotte, NC and graduated near the top of his class from Myers Park High School in 1978 and with a BA in History from Duke University in 1982. He attended flight school with the US Navy and was a Commander in the US Naval Reserves. He worked for Delta Air Lines for almost 30 years as a flight instructor and Captain.

Art was an accomplished person with many interests. As a young adult, he pursued his love of black and white photography and built a go-kart, a kayak, and a grandfather clock with the help of his dad. He ran several marathons and included running as a part of his daily life for many years. Art was musically talented. He excelled at singing and was the male lead of his high school musical, an early member of the Duke Pitchforks acapella group, and a past member of Sound Investment, an Atlanta-based acapella group.

Art was a true gourmet, who relished testing elaborate recipes and finding the perfect beverage accompaniment. He was compared to Anthony Bourdin, as he was the first to offer his expert advice on where to eat, anywhere in the world. He shared his love of food and cooking with his son Adam, often trading recipes and comparing anecdotes about their recently cooked meals. He so very often surprised his family and friends with mystery packages of foods he knew they loved, and of course, his favorite Virginia Diner peanuts.

From a young age, Art wanted to be an airline pilot and created and always won a childhood game called "pilot," played with his younger sisters in their backyard. He realized his long-time dream by attending Duke University on a Navy ROTC scholarship and entering Navy flight school upon graduation. He flew P-3s for the Navy and ultimately retired from the Naval Reserves after serving as his squadron's Commander. He moved with his family to Atlanta, Georgia in 1992 after joining Delta Air Lines in 1990. At Delta, he flew several types of planes and eventually progressed to training other pilots to fly the A321 in the Atlanta flight simulators.

Art and Rochelle had a blended family, including Art's son Adam and Rochelle's son Dominic. Rochelle and he shared many interests, including a love of fine food, socializing with good friends in their neighborhood, riding motorcycles, and traveling. He loved his sons and was very proud of their academic and career accomplishments and of the men they have become. Art and his family and friends spent many hours on their side porch sharing a cigar and lots of laughs. He loved the holidays, and for many years, he prepared Thanksgiving dinners for his family and friends. Art particularly loved Christmas, and he and Adam spent many years sharing Christmases and then further embracing the holiday when joined by Rochelle and Dominic. And he loved cars- another interest shared with Adam and Dominic. His car menagerie included a 1991 Porsche that is still cherished and will see the roads again!

Survivors include his wife Rochelle; son Adam; stepson Dominic; mother-in-law Earline Neal; sister-in-law Shannon Nelson and her husband Daniel Nelson, all of the Atlanta area; sister Mary Ellen Huckabee and her husband Steve Lewis of Atlanta; sister Margaret Huckabee and her husband Bill Pritchard of Charlotte, NC; nieces Caroline Lewis, Charlotte Lewis, Ellen Pritchard, and Elizabeth Pritchard; and a host of cousins and other relatives. In addition, he is survived by his first wife Joan Levene (Steve) who remained part of his family throughout the years and joined Rochelle, the boys and Art in many holiday celebrations. Art is also survived and remembered by many close friends from all facets of his life. He was predeceased by his parents, his father-in-law Kenny Neal Sr, and his beloved dog Pepper.

The family requests that anyone wishing to make a memorial donation please contribute to GBS/CIDP Foundation International at gbs-cidp.org, in lieu of giving flowers or other gifts. A Celebration of Life will be held on August 4 at 1pm. Please email at aghcelebrationoflife@gmail.com

Obituary :

William Russell Smith of Osceola, Missouri passed away on May 18, 2024 at Truman Manor Nursing Home. Known to his friends as Russ, he was born in Los Angeles on October 23, 1942, to Ethel and Bunyon Smith. Russ was an energetic and industrious child starting his working career at the age of nine. Each morning at 4 o’clock, he and his beloved dog Princess would get up, roll and deliver papers on his bike and then go on to school. He did this into his early teens. Russ had other jobs that contributed to his character and work ethics; selling papers at the Rose Bowl, working at a hula hoop manufacture, pumping gas, and raising rabbits that he sold to the local market. After graduating from Temple City High School, Russ served four years in the Air Force, then started teaching flying lessons in 1968 at Jenny’s Flying School. He joined Northwest Airlines where he would work for 34 years. He loved to fascinate friends with tales of his flying adventures and corny jokes. After retirement, he found his second love of flying…. racing pigeons. He bred, trained and raced until 2021 when his health required him to slow down. He had as many as 95 pigeons at one time and was totally dedicated to raising them to be the best.

Russ also loved his farm animals. Especially his mule Jacqueline. As a child, he spent summers in Chickamauga, Georgia, where his uncle had a mule that he would ride bareback around the farm. He loved that mule so much that he had to have one when he retired and named her Jacqueline.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Zona Mae Tena.

Russ leaves his wife and friend of 27 years Donna Gratzer-Smith; brother Ray Thompson (Suzanne); two daughters Michelle Smith and Kristi Lynne Smith (Scott) and stepdaughter Angela Oyler (James); three grandchildren Giovanni LaPietra, Haley Smith and Maguire Moore.

His ashes will be taken to Chickamauga Georgia, where his greatest childhood memories were born.

Donald Rhodes Obituary

Donald "Dusty" William Rhodes, 83, of Marco Island, passed away June 4, 2024. He was born in Orange, NJ to Nellie Van Vlaanderen Rhodes Titus and William Rhodes.

At the age of 13, Dusty moved to Upper Montclair, NJ, where he attended College High at Montclair State College. At the age of 17, he received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He was the youngest "plebe" in his incoming freshman class at the academy. He graduated in 1962 from the Naval Academy with a degree in engineering and entered training to be a naval aviator.

Right after graduation, he married his childhood neighbor, Nancy Crook Rhodes. After their wedding, they headed to Pensacola, FL to attend his aviation flight training. Not specifically deployed to Vietnam, Dusty flew missions as commander of an Orion P3 anti-submarine aircraft into the country while stationed in Alaska. At the age of 23, he gained the distinction of being the youngest captain of his own aircraft.

After his time with the Navy, Dusty moved his family to Miami and signed on with National Airlines. In the 70's the airline industry was unstable and was on strike quite often. This required Dusty to find alternate work to support his family. He and a few pilot friends formed a little company Dick-Tap-O-Dust where they paved driveways, painted houses and tarred roofs.

Knowing this would not support his growing family, he went back to school at the University of Miami and obtained his law degree. After graduation in 1974, the family moved to Marco Island, FL to be closer to his mother and step-father. It was here that he met Glenn Tucker and together they created the Rhodes & Tucker Law Offices on Marco Island. He still continued to fly with National Airlines, which was then acquired by Pan Am and then finally with Delta Airlines. He and his co-captain buddy Bennett Shelfer helped to negotiate the terms of the acquisition of Pan Am to Delta.

Along with Bennett Shelfer, Dusty piloted the press plane for Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, W. George Bush, and once for Bill Clinton. Dusty was present for many historical summits and decisions made by President George H.W. Bush and developed a very special friendship with the former president. He, Ben and President Bush were known to play practical jokes on each other each trip. It was almost a "who can outdo who" when they were together. Dusty was also blessed to develop very special relationships with both President W. George Bush and Governor Jeb Bush. Governor Bush appointed Dusty to serve as an Election

Commissioner for the state of Florida and was eventually Chairman of that board.

In between his travel schedule and time in the law firm, Dusty still found time to coach the Marco Island Swim Team. Here he developed many special friendships with his children's friends, which continued throughout his life.

Dusty had three very special places that he called home: Marco Island, Harbour Island, the Bahamas and Bolton Landing, NY. Having homes in each of these places, he also had very close, lifelong friendships with many special people in his life.

Dusty is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nancy Crook Rhodes, daughter Paige Rhodes, daughter Cameron Rhodes Tucker (Jamey) and son Donny Rhodes (Stacey). Grandchildren Connor, Lauren, Maddie, Allie, Delaney and Trey, sister Carol Rhodes, step-sisters Lynn Cruz and Jean Titus. He was predeceased by his mother Nellie Van Vlaanderen Rhodes Titus, Father William Rhodes, Step Father Franklyn Titus and grandson Clayton Rhodes Burroughs.

Dusty was larger than life and the best father anyone could have asked for. He loved largely and deeply and was a friend to many. He will be missed beyond measure and loved forever.

A Celebration of Life will be held in October.

With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Alan Archer, 60, of Signal Mountain, Tennessee, on May 24, 2024. He passed away quietly, surrounded by loved ones, after a year-long struggle with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).

Alan was born on January 8, 1964, to James and Linda Archer of Summerville, Georgia. By the time he was 12, Alan wanted to become a pilot. From then on, he pursued that dream with determination. Alan attended the University of Georgia (class of 1986). Upon graduation, he earned a commission in the U.S. Marine Corps and began flight training.

He served in Operation Desert Storm, earning the Air Medal. His military career took Alan to Pensacola, Florida, as an instructor for new Naval aviators and where his daughter, Hannah, was born. In Okinawa, Japan, Alan flew CT-39G and UC-12F fixed-wing planes in support of III Marine Expeditionary Force, including humanitarian missions in East Timor and throughout Southeast Asia. Eventually Alan would achieve the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps.

In 2001, Alan left the Marine Corps and began his 23-year career with Delta Airlines. Based in both Atlanta and Salt Lake City, Alan flew as first officer on the MD88, 737, A330, and A350, and served as captain on the A220. As an aviator, Alan earned respect from his peers for his calm demeanor and his patience instructing new pilots.

Alan and Betsy adopted their son, James, from Nanjing, China, in 2004, and settled in Signal Mountain, Tennessee. Alan will be most remembered for his strength of character. Often, his silence was more powerful than words. He enjoyed anything to do with the outdoors: biking, hiking, climbing, wakeboarding, and kayaking. He was always up for a new challenge and loved exploring new places. To his children, he was a kind and patient father, whether it was teaching them to ride a bike, roll a kayak, or face their futures with dignity. He taught them about honor and integrity through his actions, not words.

Alan leaves behind his wife, Betsy; daughter, Hannah; son, James; parents James and Linda Archer; sister and brother-in-law, Kathy and Bill Hix; nephew, Blake (Megan) Hix and great-nephew Beau; and niece, Ali Hix.
