Military veteran, NEA/DL Capt. Eugene Heenan Swearingen

October 12, 1926 – January 21, 2025



Sharing news with the passing of one of our oldest, retired Northeast/Delta pilot Captain Gene Swearingen, age 98.  Gene joined Northeast Airlines 01-11-1958 and retired with Delta Air Lines in 1986 based Miami.  Widowed in October of 2020, Gene is survived by his daughter Laura (John), and by his granddaughter Shannon, along with nieces and their families.

Eugene was born in Miami, Florida to Eugene D. and Florence (Quarterman) Swearingen on October 12, 1926. He completed all of his education in Miami. He married Virginia Thompson on June 24, 1950 in Tampa, Florida. He graduated from Miami High and then joined the service. He worked as an airline Captain for Delta Air Lines for more than 25 years. He was a veteran of World War Two and served in the Navy, where he earned many certifications of which he was proud. He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, the American Paint Horse Association, the Florida Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, the Florida Farm Bureau, The Airline Pilots Association, the American Legion, and was a founding Charter member of the National World War Two Museum.

 

Eugene is preceded in death by his wife Virginia, his son Stephen, his grandson Christopher, his brother Roy Edward and his parents.

 

Eugene is survived by his daughter Laura and her husband John Hardy, his granddaughter Shannon. His nieces Reina and Rebecca and their families and his niece Nevra Schiavon and her family.

 

A visitation will be held Thursday, January 30, 2025 from 7-9 pm at Fred Hunter Funeral Home in Davie, Florida. His funeral service will be held at 10:00 am Friday January 31, 2025 at Fred Hunter Funeral Home Davie followed by graveside service at Fort Lauderdale Memorial Gardens, Fort Lauderdale. All arrangements are being handled by Fred Hunter Funeral Home Davie.
