DL Capt. Robert J. Stanek

Word has been received with news that Vietnam veterand and
retired DL pilot Captain Robert J. ‘Bob’ Stanek has passed away at the age of
75. Captain Stanek hired on with Delta 05-03-1965 and was based ATL.
Arrangements have been entrusted to H. M. Patterson Funeral Home in Marietta

A funeral mass will be said for Captain Stanek on Wednesday
February 6th at the Catholic Church of St. Ann with viewing the evening prior at
the funeral home. Captain Stanek had most recently resided at 4811 Lake Fjord
Pass , Marietta GA 30068-1636.
Obituary:
Mr. Robert “Bob” Stanek of Marietta
passed away January 31, 2013. Bob was born in Chicago, IL on April 9, 1937 to
the late Frances and Walter Stanek. After his graduation from William Howard
Taft High School, he went to the University of Illinois and graduated with a
bachelor’s degree in architectural design. He lettered in track while in
college. He enjoyed running throughout his life, running in 4 marathons,
including the Marine Marathon in Quantico, VA. After college, Bob served in the
Marine Corps and was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam from 1963-1964. He survived
being shot down twice. Bob often said “The best 5 years of my life were my 5
years in the Marines”. Bob was a car collector and belonged to numerous car
clubs. He leaves behind his brother, Donald W. Stanek and his wife Rose as well
as many friends. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at
11:00 am at the Catholic Church of St Ann. Interment will follow a reception at
2:30pm at Georgia National Cemetery. The visitation will be on Tuesday from
6:00-8:00pm at H.M. Patterson & Son Canton Hill. In lieu of flowers, please
send contributions in memory of Bob to either Vietnam Veterans of America,

I really liked Bob. I have a scale replica in my office of a V12 Ferrari motor he gave me years back. I'd see him at car shows now and then.
ReplyDeleteAs my wife says, the days are long but the years are short. I hadn't seen him in a couple of years and a couple of cool new movies came out the past few years I thought he'd have a keen interest in: The Bus Movie (about VW Buses) and The Bug Movie (about, of course, VW Bugs.) My son and I drove over to his house this morning with a special canister of hot chocolate (he didn't like coffee but he loved hot chocolate) to give him the hot chocolate, say Hi and see if he'd like to come over to our house sometime soon to watch the films. We could tell he no longer lived there which prompted this search which prompted me finding out about his passing. So yeah, we weren't friends, but we were acquaintances and I'm very very sad to learn that he's gone. RIP, Bob. You were one of a kind.
