Delta Pioneer member Capt. George E. Massey hired on with Delta Air Lines

Mr. George Edward Massey, Sr. age 84 of Moreland died June 9, 2013 while in the compassionate care of the West Georgia Hospice in LaGrange. Mr. Massey was born October 30, 1928 in Shelby County, Tennessee to the late Wakeman Norfleet and Ruby Vivian West Massey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, George Edward Massey, Jr. He was discharged from The United States Air Force in 1952 as a SSgt where he served in the 155th Tac Recon Squadron during the Korean War. He also served in the Tennessee Air National Guard. He flew for Delta Airlines beginning in 1956 for 32 years; having started out in the DC-3 and retired flying the L1011. During the years his family lived in the Atlanta area he was active in The Ben Hill Presbyterian Church and was a Scout Master. His interest in vintage aircraft enabled him to donate his Stinson SR-8E Reliant to the Delta Museum. He also enjoyed being a ham radio operator. Mr. Massey is survived by his wife of 63 years, Allene Phillips Massey of Moreland and a daughter, Sharon Massey. His surviving siblings are Gerald K. Massey (and Vivian) of Collierville TN, Robert F. Massey (and Virginia) of Olive Branch MS and Virginia Blevins of Bartlett TN. There is an extended family of nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements are by McKoon Funeral Home at 38 Jackson Street where visitation with the family will be on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 beginning at 12:00 noon until 1:30 PM. A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM at Southview Cemetery in Moreland with Dr. Harry Barrow officiating.
