Notification with the passing of RNPA member retired pilot Captain Melvin Lawrence Christensen, age 92.  Captain Christensen joined Northwest Airlines 04-20-1941 and worked his way up from the ground to F/E and pilot before retiring in 1981.  Captain Christensen was widowed just four weeks prior to his passing with the death of his wife Margaret ‘Peggy’.

Christensen, Melvin L., age 92, of Bloomington, passed away peacefully on 2/4/14 at Fairview Southdale Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born on June 25, 1921 in Veblen, SD to Carl and Johanna Christensen. Melvin graduated from Veblen High School in 1941, and then served in the Navy during WWII. He then met Margaret (Peggy) Hegge and they were married September 3, 1949. Melvin was employed with Northwest Airlines for 39 years, working various positions, ending as Captain. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Besides his love for his family, he had many passions including dancing, singing, gardening, carpentry, golfing, boating, and biking. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Peggy; daughter, Debra; siblings, Andrew, Raymond, Caroline, and Edna. He is survived by daughters, Linda (Dave) King, and Wanda (Jeff) Bielec; son-in-law, Al Thompson and his wife Jean; grandchildren, Jacob and Jonathan King, Brent (Heather) Bielec, Bryce (Laura) Bielec, Mark (Leslie) Thompson, Kristen Thompson, sister-in-law Gladys (Andrew) Christensen, and brother-in-law, Arne (Caroline) Olson; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. Services for Melvin will be held Saturday, February 8th at 11 AM with visitation 1 hour prior at Richfield Lutheran Church, 8 W. 60th St., Minneapolis. Interment at Dawn Valley Memorial Park. Margaret A. "Peggy" Christensen (nee Hegge), age 92 of Bloomington.  Passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Dec. 30th at the Presbyterian Homes of Bloomington.  Born Dec. 21, 1921 in Granite Falls, MN to Knute and Anne Hegge.  After her mother died, she was raised by Martin and Eline Rosvold in Cottonwood, MN.  She graduated from Cottonwood High in 1939 and then went to Business School in Minneapolis.  She worked as a secretary in Minneapolis for ten years.  She met Melvin Christensen and they were married on Sept. 3, 1949.  They spent 25 winters in Florida and enjoyed golfing and square dancing.  Peggy also enjoyed cooking, baking and being active in the Naomi Circle at her church.  Peggy was a devoted wife and mother and a woman of quiet faithfulness.  She will be remembered for so many things, but most of all she will be remembered with love.  Preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Debra; 4 Hegge siblings; Alvin, Clara, Selmer and Kenneth; and 10 Rosvold siblings.  Survived by her beloved husband of 64 years, Melvin; daughters, Linda (Dave) King, Wanda (Jeff) Bielec; son-in-law, Al Thompson and his wife, Jean; grandchildren, Jacob and Jonathan King, Brent (Heather) Bielec, Bryce (Laura) Bielec, Mark (Leslie) Thompson, and Kristen Thompson; 2 Rosvold siblings, Corinne Campbell of Bremerton, WA and Marjorie (Rev. Jack) Jacobsen; sister-in-law, Joan (Mrs. Selmer) Hegge; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

 

A special thank you to the staff at Presbyterian Homes of Bloomington, especially Vicki Tharaldson and to the U. of M. Physicians Heart Clinic, especially Kristine Mannchen for all of their care and support.

 

Funeral service Saturday, January 4, 2014, at 11:00 A.M. at Richfield Lutheran Church, Nicollet Ave. at 60th St., Mpls. Visitation Friday from 4-7 P.M. at the Morris Nilsen Chapel, 6527 Portland Ave. S., Richfield, and one hour prior to the service at church.  Interment Dawn Valley Memorial Park.

Memorials are preferred to Richfield Lutheran Church or to Presbyterian Homes of Bloomington.
