___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Contributor contact info is generally removed before posting (unless requested otherwise).

Belated notification with the passing of retired pilot Captain Shelby Gordon Tuttle Sr., age 94.

Obituary mentions retiring from Delta Air Lines but I believe Captain Tuttle would have retired with Republic before their merger with Northwest.  Captain Tuttle was widowed in December 2012 by the death of his wife Alberta Coffman Tuttle.  Services were Saturday, Feb. 15 at St. Aidan Episcopal Church, Camano Island WA.

The online obituary may be viewed at  http://www.scnews.com/obituaries/article_8f0f6002-8dc3-11e3-9726-001a4bcf6878.html  If anyone has more information to share, please let us know and we will update our blogspot

Thank you,

Shelby Tuttle was born in Gettysburg, Penn., the eldest son of Shelby Mason and Emilia Gordon Tuttle.

He grew up on the family pear orchard in Medford, Ore., where he had many fond childhood memories.

Shelby joined the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1942 during a time of great peril for our nation. He received flight training as an aviation cadet at the Darr School of Aeronautics, British Training School, near Ponca City, Okla.

It was there that he met and fell in love with a beautiful young training instructor, Alberta Coffman. The couple eloped to Winfield, Kan., March 26, 1943. They became lifelong partners, and Shelby devoted himself to her care in their final years.

After his service during World War II, Shelby began his career as a commercial pilot for West Coast Airlines. Shelby loved being a pilot and he took great pride in his work.

Shelby's career advanced as the airline industry grew and he eventually served as a vice president for Republic Airlines. He later returned to flying commercial aircraft and he retired from Delta Air Lines in 1980.

Shelby and Alberta enjoyed many travel adventures together after his retirement. They moved from Seattle to Camano Island in 2003, the same year they joined St. Aidan's.

Shelby loved his home and friends on Camano Island. He especially enjoyed his time on the water crabbing.

Shelby was proceeded in death by his wife of 69 years.

He is survived by three sons: Shelby Gordon Jr., Laurence and Brett; grandchildren Gregory, Christian, Geoffrey, Shelby and Nikki; and eight great-grandchildren.

Shelby was a man of great integrity and love who selflessly provided wonderful opportunity to his family. He cherished the many friendships he made, and he will be missed.
