___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Contributor contact info is generally removed before posting (unless requested otherwise).

Subject: RNPA News: Walt Mills Has Flown West.

With profound regret I must inform you that Captain Walter Mills III has passed away. He succumbed to pancreatic cancer on November 01. This passing has been confirmed by his close friend Sterling Bentsen.  Walt was 73 years old and was hired by NWA on April 11, 1966.

  1. Walt was one of my favorite copilots but he progressed so fast up the seniority list that "he out grew me" and I only had the pleasure of flying with Walt a few months.
A classic experience Walt and I had was on a clear noontime day Eastbound over the Pacific on the way from Japan to Honolulu. One flight was out of OSA and the other out of NRT. We met about an hour or so West of HNL. Walt was just below me and off to the starboard side. We flew formation for quite awhile so people could take pictures and he told his passengers to "look up to the left and see my B-747". I told my passengers to look down to the right and see Walt. After several minutes of picture taking Walt and I switched positions so people on the other side of our planes could get their pictures too.
Sorry I do not have ant pictures for you !
May God Rest your Soul old buddy !
