CARES AND CONCERNSInformation has come to us of the death this morning of Mrs. Wanda June Coker Byrd, 81, wife of retired Delta Captain Lester M. Byrd, who was hired by Delta January 3, 1967 and retired in 1997.  June was born July 29, 1937 in Mississippi and married Les on December 30, 1960.  She had been very ill for the past few months with pneumonia and other illnesses and had been home under hospice care only a few days until her death this morning, June 3, 2019.  Funeral plans are being discussed and she will be buried in her home town of Pontotoc, MS.

Les and I were new-hire classmates in 1967 but he spent most of his career at DFW while I was based in ATL.

Wanda passed away on Monday, June 3, 2019. Wanda was a resident of Arlington, Texas at the time of passing. She graduated from Pontotoc High School and attended Itawamba College. June and Les travelled widely while Les served as a pilot in the US Navy, including long stays in Japan and California. Burial will be in the Pontotoc City Cemetery on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at 10 am. Donations in memory of June can be sent to Habitat for Humanity, 13 W. Washington St, Pontotoc MS 38863 or the charity of your choice.

June Byrd, neé Coker, of Arlington, TX, 81, passed away June 3, 2019 peacefully at home. She graduated from Pontotoc High School and attended Itawamba College.  She married Lester Byrd on December 30, 1960.  June and Les travelled widely while Les served as a pilot in the US Navy, including long stays in Japan and California.  They settled in Arlington Texas to raise their two sons, Jeff and Scott, when Les became a pilot for Delta Airlines in 1967.  In Les’ retirement years, they spent more time in Pontotoc with family and friends. June was an avid bridge player, reaching the Life Master level, and was a formidable cook and seamstress.  Burial will be in the Pontotoc City Cemetery on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at 10 am. Bro. Marcus Coward will officiate.  Survivors: husband-Lester Morgan Byrd, son- Jeff (Ellie) Byrd, 3 grandchildren- Rachel Byrd of New York, NY, Natalie Byrd and Aaron Byrd of Burlingame, CA. Preceded in death: son- Scott Byrd. Donations in memory of June can be sent to Habitat for Humanity, 13 W. Washington St, Pontotoc MS 38863 or the charity of your choice.
