___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. DL Capt. Robert Michael Burns

~ IN MEMORY ~
DL Capt. Robert Michael Burns
January 11, 1941 - February 7, 2020

Friends have notified us with this news of the passing of retired Delta pilot Captain Robert Michael Burns, age 79.  Captain Burns joined Delta Air Lines 04-01-1963.  He is survived by his wife Kelley, also his son and grandchildren.
Friend and colleague Capt. Harry Ballance writes:  “He was recovering from a back operation in a convalescent center. Apparently it was cardiac arrest. Mom sue for Delta for a number of years, starting, I believe in 1963. He retired with the group known as The Fabulous Five Hundred in the late 1990s, as a 1011 line Check Airman. He flew for the next 10 or so years in the private sector as a Captain in several Part 135 and 91 operations. Bob was based in Atlanta, New Orleans, Miami, and Cincinnati. I had the pleasure of flying with him for many of those 10 years in the corporate world after we both retired from Delta. He was a true professional, and a good traveling companion.”
The funeral home website offers a brief obituary online at
A full obituary is forthcoming and Kelley will keep us posted as to a celebration of life event.

  1. I am going to miss Bob. He was a great travelling companion and quite knowledgeable of all things aviation.
