January 26, 1936 ~ July 15, 2019


Michael Allen Cummings, age 83, of Aitkin and Puerto Vallarta, died July 15, 2019, in Minnesota.  Captain Cummings joined Northwest Airlines 06-03-1968.  He is survived by his wife Joan plus his children and grandchildren.

Obituary…………….. Michael Allen Cummings
Michael A. Cummings, age 83 of Aitkin and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico died Monday, July 15, 2019 at the Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin, Mn.

Michael was born January 26, 1936 in Aitkin the son of Francis and Oveline (Cartie) Cummings. He moved with his family to Brainerd at a young age and attended schools in Brainerd graduating from the Brainerd High School. He then attended St. John’s University for two years and received his AA degree. Michael then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was a naval pilot for 12 years. He married Joan E. Williamson on July 30, 1960 in Iwakuni, Japan. They lived in Norfolk, Virginia and also Milton, Florida. He had served on the Aircraft Carrier the USS America. When he left the U.S. Navy at the rank of Lt. Commander he went to work for Northwest Airlines as a pilot flying DC 10’s. They lived in Bloomington, Mn., Honolulu, Hawaii and Seattle, Wash. He flew for Northwest for 28 years. Upon his retirement he and his wife would spend summers in Aitkin, Mn. and wintered in Puerto Vallarta. He enjoyed traveling with family and friends, watching the lake and walks in the woods, deer hunting and boating. Family was very important to him.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years Joan Cummings of Aitkin and Puerto Vallarta; Sons: Steve Cummings and husband Bill Miller of Minneapolis; David Cummings and wife Jill of Maple Grove, Mn.; Grandchildren: Logan and Berit Cummings; Sister: Marlene (John) Arnold of Menlo Park, Calf. and Sister in law Jan Cummings of Brainerd, Mn. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Francis Wayne Cummings.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, July 20, 2019 at 11 AM from St. James Catholic Church in Aitkin with Fr. David Forsman officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 7 PM with a Rosary service at 7 PM and also 1 hour prior to the service at the church Saturday. Interment will be in the St. Thomas Cemetery in Aitkin. Arrangements are with the Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
