Notification with the passing of retired North Central/Northwest/Delta
pilot Captain Niley John Rosemond, age 73. Captain Rosemond joined North Central Airlines
in 1977 and transitioned with the mergers.
He is survived by his wife Ethel, his children and his

Obituaries : ROSEMOND, Mr. Niley - Age 73, passed away
Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at his residence. Public Viewing 12:00 PM-6:00 PM
Monday, July 19, 2021 from the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W.
Flint Park Blvd. After which, Mr. Rosemond will be taken to Golden Gate Funeral
Home, 5701 E. Loop 820 South Fort Worth, TX 76119. Family hour 12:30 PM
Thursday, July 22, 2021 at Golden Gate Funeral Home, with funeral service
commencing at 1:00 PM, Pastor Dr. Charles A. Moody, officiating.
Interment Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 200 Mountain
Creek Parkway, Dallas, TX.
Mr. Rosemond was Honorably Discharged from the United States
Marine Corps.

Niley J. Rosemond-a teacher for hundreds, a mentor to many,
and a friend to all, died July 14, 2021 at his home in Grand Blanc, Michigan,
surrounded by his loving wife, two devoted daughters, and grandchildren at the
age of 73.
Niley was born February 22, 1948, in Calvert, Texas, the son
of John Quincy Rosemond and Silveree Rosemond-Brooks, educated at O.J. Thomas
High School and Prairie View A&M University. While attending Prairie View
A&M University, he participated in the first Naval ROTC program ever established
at a historically black university. The 13 young, black men, that comprised
that pioneering Naval ROTC Unit, the Golden 13, graduated May, 1970, as
commission officers.
Niley was wise beyond his education, and people of all ages
and stages in life sought his advice and benefited from his counsel. He was a
mentor to the Big Brother/Big Sister organization, as well as both the Flint
and Carmen Ainsworth School Districts. Niley also volunteered his service to
the Tuskegee Airmen during Black History Month. Niley was a member of the New
Jerusalem Full Gospel Baptist Church, where he served on the board for the
Leonard Lamar Floyd Scholarship Committee.
Niley served in the United States Marine Corps. as a pilot
from May 1970 to April 1976. He was then employed with AC Spark Plug (a
division of General Motors), followed by a rewarding 31-year career as a
commercial airline pilot with Northwest/Delta Airlines.
Niley was a true golf enthusiast and will be missed by many.
Niley was always smiling , expressing some of his special sayings “You betcha!”
and “Yeah buddy!” among many others.

O.J. Thomas will celebrate its 52nd year Homecoming Aug.
11-13, 2017.
The awards and memorial ceremony will be held at Progressive
Missionary Baptist Church on Aug. 11. Starting time for the ceremony is 7 p.m.
The special guest speaker is Captain Niley J. Rosemond a retired
Northwest/Delta Airlines Pilot.
Captain Niley Rosemond is no stranger to the alumni, nor the
community. He is an alumni of O.J. Thomas High School class of 1966 where he
graduated with honors and second rank in his class. He grew up in Maysfield,
where he attended Milam Grove Elementary school. After completing elementary
school, he attended O.J. Thomas High in Cameron.
Upon graduation, Rosemond attended and graduated from
Prairie View A&M University in 1970 with a Bachelor’s degree in electronic
engineering technology with minor studies in military science. While at Prairie
View A&M University, he was one of the top leaders in the Navy ROTC
program. Following graduation, he received a commission of second lieutenant in
the United States Marines Corps. He was accepted in the Naval Air Flight School
and graduated in 1972. Following flight school, he flew in the Marine Corps
flying the light attack plane (OV-10) Bronco and other aircraft. Rosemond
served as a marine pilot for five and a half years before being discharged from
the military in 1976.
In 1977 he was hired as an airline pilot by North Central
Airlines. Upon completing training, he was based at Detroit Metro Airport.
Later mergers, changed north central to become northwest and with another
merger to become now Northwest/Delta Airlines. Rosemond flew domestic routes
flying the DC-9 and DC-10 jet airliners.
He finished his career in 2008, flying the Airbus A-320 and the Airbus
A-330 jet airliners on international flights across the Atlantic and the
Pacific for 12 years. He remained with the company for 31 years as an airline
pilot.
Rosemond married his longtime sweetheart from high school
and college in 1971 and to the union they have two daughters who live in Texas.
He and his wife Ethel Sherman Rosemond continues to live in Michigan. They are
the grandparents of three children who live in Texas.
Rosemond will be the parade’s grand marshal and will be
available to talk and discuss topics on what it takes to become a pilot at the
bulldog luncheon held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12, at the O.J. Thomas campus
cafeteria.
