___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Contributor contact info is generally removed before posting (unless requested otherwise).

Obituary : https://times-herald.com/news/2021/08/john-edward-miller

Born in Cherryvale, KS, John grew up on a farm, lettered in numerous sports, and graduated valedictorian of his class at Cherryvale High School.

He earned his agricultural engineering degree from Kansas State University then served as a US Navy pilot for eight years. His joy of flying took him to a career of 29 years with Delta Airlines. That career saw him move to Newnan in 1978, and he ultimately retired as a Captain in 1999. In his 43 years in Newnan, he worshiped and served at various churches and the Newnan Kiwanis Club. And, of special note, John was 31 years sober and continuously active in AA as a coach/mentor to countless people.

He was a devoted husband to Cathy for almost 40 years. In those years they cared for their sons and daughter and the depth of his love is demonstrated in the many and wonderful memories he has provided his twelve grandchildren. His was a life of quiet generosity. He loved to travel and explore, truly appreciating the backroad that was less traveled and that obscure point of history for which few would take the time to stop. It is appropriate that he passed while on one of those trips.

Dad would chuckle at this, but if you knew him well, you would agree that he could sometimes be called cantankerous, even a touch critical. And yet, he never meant harm. He really just knew no pretense. You knew where he stood. His uniquely John phrases and perseverance in keeping everyone in touch will be missed.

John was preceded in death by Charles & Mildred Miller of Cherryvale, KS (mother & father), Jean Sleeth (sister), and Cathy Miller (wife) who passed in February 2021. He leaves behind a family legacy and many friends that will miss him terribly. His remaining immediate family includes his sister Ruth Rusmisel, sons Scott & (spouse Sharla) & Bob (spouse Sheryl) Miller and Eric (spouse Tammy) Polly, daughter Missy (spouse Misty) Polly Howell and twelve grandchildren; Zack, Spencer, Nick, Jack, Mackenzie, Sarah, Abby, Emma, Rex, Chase, Heath, Kason.

As John was a pilot, the first and last stanzas of the poem High Flight are fitting as he has certainly 'slipped the surly bonds of earth' and now 'put out his hand and touched the face of God'.

There will be a Memorial service at 2 pm on Saturday, August 14, 2021, at Cornerstone United Methodist Church on Highway 154 in Sharpsburg, GA. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Kiwanis International Childrens Fund in his memory.

Cathy Miller  (February 1, 1947 - February 10, 2021)

Obituary :  Cathy Sue Wyrick Miller, born in New Orleans, LA, 74 years old, passed away on Feb 10, 2021, in her hometown of over 40 years, Newnan, GA.

Cathy had an unmatched spirit and passion for life and Christ and as a member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church- she illuminated everything and everyone she encountered.

Cathy truly always had a smile and an open heart and door for everyone she met. She touched countless lives and hearts and spent a lifetime educating children as a teacher and driver of excellence within her classrooms, most recently in the Coweta County School System. In her retirement, she became extremely active in Kiwanis and K-kids.

She is no longer in pain and for that we are thankful. We are not sure how any of us will move forward without her, but commend the exceptional efforts and care of the team at Piedmont Newnan.

She has always been and still is a warrior. A warrior in her ability to prevail through just about anything, including COVID. A warrior through pain. A warrior through loss. A warrior through success. A warrior in her own strength. A warrior in fighting for her children and family. A warrior in her unmatched love of her 12 grandchildren. A warrior in every single thing she did. And above all a warrior in Christ. She did ALL of this with grace and kindness and inner and outer beauty. Fly high, our sweet angel. Fly high.

Cathy is survived by her beloved family - husband, John E. Miller, daughter, Melissa Polly (Misty Howell), son, Eric Polly (Tammy) and their kids - Rex, Chase, Heath and Kason, stepson Scott Miller (Sharla) and their children, Zach, Nick, McKenzie and Abby, stepson Robert Miller (Sheryl) and their children, Spencer, Jack, Sarah and Emma. She is also survived by her three siblings, Beth (Mike) Respess, Eddie (Pat) Wyrick, Charles (LeeAnn) Wyrick and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins and other extended family.

She is preceded in death by her devoted parents, Ed & Lois Wyrick and nephew Jonathan Respess.

The family has chosen to hold formal services at a time when more people will be able to join in the celebration of her life well lived and well loved.

In lieu of flowers, please send all donations in memory of Cathy to the Kiwanis Club of Coweta County to support their continued efforts within the community she loved so dearly. Please send to:
