Notice of passing….retired Delta Air Lines pilot Captain Charles William Winstead, age 83.  Captain Winstead joined Delta Air Lines 02-03-1969 and retired with Delta in 2000 based 031/ATL.  He is survived by his children and their families.

Charles William Winstead, age 83 of Griffin, Georgia, passed away Monday, January 15, 2024 at his residence.

 

Charles was born in Mountain City, Tennessee on March 15, 1940. He was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years Penny Marshall Winstead; parents, Doris and Virginia Winstead; sisters, Francis Morris, Wilma Freeman. Charles was a caring father and great friend. He enjoyed farming was very adventurous. Charles served as an aircraft carrier pilot in the U.S. States Navy. He retired with 7 years of active military service and 20 years in the reserves. He also retired as a pilot with Delta Airlines after 32 years of service. Charles enjoyed challenging people.

 

Survivors include his companion Carolyn Freeman; children, Charles William Winstead 111 (Elizabeth), Melanie Sue DeCesare (Robert), Jennifer Kaye Winstead, Jonathan Marshall Winstead (Michelle); grandchildren, Isabelle, Emily, Charles 1V, Anthony, Nicholas, Catherine; sister, Velma; several nieces and nephews along with countless friends and neighbors.

 

Visitation will be Sunday, January 21, 2024 from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 3:00 pm in the chapel. Guests are welcome to join the family for a meal after the service. Interment will be at Stonewall Memorial Garden in Manassas, Virginia on January 27. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in honor of Charles.

 

Conner-Westbury Funeral Home, 1891 W. McIntosh Road is in charge of the arrangements.
