___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Contributor contact info is generally removed before posting (unless requested otherwise).

Obituary: Charles William (Bill) Hertler

It is with great sadness the family of Charles William (Bill) Hertler announce his passing on October 19, 2024 at the age of 82. Bill will be fondly remembered by family and friends as a beacon of love and kindness who always put others first and dedicated his life to helping as many people as he could.

Born in Missoula, Montana, he attended University there and afterwards joined the Air Force serving as a F4 pilot. His experience as an Air Force pilot evolved into a 31-year career flying for Delta Airlines. For the past 25 years, Bill and his family have resided in Park City.

Growing up in Missoula, Bill's father shared his passion for fly fishing with Bill, who also became a skilled fly fisherman … one who could tease a trout out of the most unlikely waters. Along with fishing and his appreciation of the outdoors, Bill and his wife, Cherry, found great enjoyment in camping and became involved with a group of Park City friends going on numerous camping trips every year.

Throughout Bill's life, he exhibited an ability to fix almost anything. As a youth, he found and rebuilt lawn mowers, and as an adult, honed his skills restoring cars. His skills became known by neighbors, and he became known as the neighborhood "fix-it-man."

As a Park City resident, Bill enjoyed skiing the mountains, and when not on the slopes, he worked part time for Deer Valley Resort for 13 years. He also became involved with a group of mountain bikers. His passion for speed and distance earned him the title of "Wild Bill" among his biking friends. Bill is survived by the love of his life, his wife Cherry, as well as sons Chris and Mark, brother Bob and sister Carolyn. Bill's gentle nature and generously kind heart will now be enjoyed by all those who have passed before him.
