DL Capt. Ricard "Rick" W Martin

Navy veteran, DL Capt. Ricard "Rick" W Martin

March 27, 1944 ~ August 14, 2025

Rick left the Navy in 1972, was hired by Delta Airlines, and he flew with them until he retired in 2002 as a Captain.

Rick joined Delta Air Lines 02-26-1973 and retired 02-01-2002.  He was based PDX, then 030/SLC prior to retiring.  Captain Ricard “Rick” Ward Martin, age 81, is survived by his wife Joyce “Joy”, and by his children and their families.  He had most recently resided in Oregon :  558 E Lauren Ave., Hermiston, OR 97838.

 Ricard "Rick" Martin Obituary

Rick died peacefully in home hospice on August 14th, 2025, surrounded and supported by loved ones in Hermiston, Oregon.

Rick grew up in La Grande, graduated from the Naval Academy in 1966 and first met his future wife Joyce (Joy) while he was home on leave as a commissioned Naval officer.  The pair shared a pizza on a blind date, and Joy was struck by Rick’s intellect, gentle demeanor and impeccable manners.  Rick and Joy married in 1967, and would move between San Diego and Texas while Rick piloted S-2’s from aircraft carriers and later, trained new pilots to do the same.  Rick left the Navy in 1972, was hired by Delta Airlines, and he flew with them until he retired in 2002 as a Captain.

Rick and Joy moved from Houston with their son, Roger to Rockford, Illinois, where their daughter Amanda was born.  They moved to Eugene, Oregon, where they raised their two children, and would later live in Sisters, Prineville, and finally, Hermiston.  Of his career as a pilot, Rick would enjoy the challenge, a chance for him to experience locations and cultures around the world, but did not appreciate the time it kept him away from his home and family.

For those closest to him, Rick was known for his steadfast care, concern, support, intelligence, and independent thinking.  He was faithful to his loved ones and his duties as a provider, and fostered education and learning as priorities for himself and his family.  He was generous with immediate and extended family with possessions and property, never failed to offer help when asked for it, and was always considering and implementing ways to help others move forward in their lives, especially when times were difficult.  This was so natural to him that it was sometimes easy for those impacted by his generosity to forget just how special it was.

Rick valued human connection and peace, and spread his influence humbly.  You might have read one of Rick’s carefully-crafted letters to the editor, encountered him in your life when he held the door open for you or your entire party, or at work when someone looked you in the eye and offered thanks to you for something simple you did for him.  You might have seen him sitting in a coffee shop with a good book and a maple bar, and he might have tried to begin a conversation with you about your perspective on life.  As much as was humanly possible, Rick was sincere, respectful, and behaved and lived as a gentleman.

Rick is survived and missed by his wife of 58 years, Joy, his daughter Amanda (David) Melville, her children Hannah, Hailey, and Hope, and his son Roger (Kelly) Martin, and his children Connor, Evan, and Quinn.

He is also survived by his sister Barbara (Craig) Terjeson, nephew Sam (Nieves) Martin and his son Alex, and niece Karen (John) Hardaway and her son John Jr.

Rick is predeceased by his father, Wendell, mother, Eleanor, brothers Dennis (Lerice) and Lee (Anjala).

A Celebration of Life gathering will be held Saturday, October 18th, at 10:30 A.M. at the Hermiston First United Methodist Church.

Please share memories of Rick with his family at burnsmortuaryhermiston.com

Burns Mortuary of Hermiston, Oregon is in care of arrangements.

June 28, 1984 - August 14, 2025

Patrick “Pat” “LeeRoy” Joseph Daly joined Delta Air Lines 03-19-2018 and was based SLC.  Pat is survived by his wife Kayla, and by his parents and many dear family members.  Services will be held tomorrow and Wednesday, Aug 26 & 27 in Utah.

Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Joseph “LeeRoy” Daly, USMC (Ret.) — a cherished and beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, Marine, and friend—was called to God unexpectedly on August 14th, 2025. He was 41 years old.

Pat was born June 28, 1984, in Boston, Massachusetts. In a pattern that would prove to fit Pat’s future lifestyle, he moved frequently with his family to happy homes in Massachusetts, Colorado, Florida, Connecticut, and finally Vermont, where he graduated from South Burlington High School in 2002. A fitness enthusiast, Pat discovered his love of hockey, martial arts, track and field, and became a beloved member of the high school hockey, soccer, and track teams. He continued playing hockey throughout his life, including the Annual Armed Services Hockey Association tournament in Las Vegas where his team “The Kids” won multiple championships. Pat nurtured in his siblings a love of hockey in backyard rinks and youth leagues in Vermont, and he supported them throughout their own hockey careers. He wore #4 in honor of his brother Mike.

The 9/11 attacks came in Pat’s senior year of high school, and with all the honor, integrity, leadership, and fortitude that was Pat, he stepped up to serve his country and accepted a Naval Reserves Officer Training Corps (NROTC) college scholarship. Pat graduated from Boston University—where he also ran on the BU track team—and was commissioned into the United States Marine Corps in 2006. Feeling the call of the open skies and the ever-present desire for adrenaline, Pat pursued Marine Aviation, one of the most competitive professions in the US military. Pat earned his “wings of gold” and became a fighter pilot in the F/A-18 fighter aircraft, eventually achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His 20-year military career included 12 years of active duty, including two deployments to Iwakuni, Japan and service at USMC aviation bases including Pensacola, FL, Miramar, CA, and Beaufort, SC with Marine Fighter Attack Squadrons 101, 224, and 323.

In 2018, Pat transitioned from active-duty service to the US Marine Corps Aviation Reserve, where, as a flight instructor, he instilled his knowledge and excellence in the next generation of fighter pilots. His last flight in the F/A-18 Legacy Hornet was Sunday August 10th, 2025. Also in 2018, Pat joined Delta Air Lines as a commercial pilot. He loved the lifestyle and cherished his time with the Delta Family, a circle of friends he came to love. Pat was a leader of the Delta Air Lines Ski and Snowboard Club and competed multiple years in the Annual International Airlines Ski Races in Austria and Switzerland.

Pat settled in the beautiful mountains of Utah, where he learned how to paraglide, speed-fly, and speed-ride with pilot friends. Pat fell in love with the extreme sport of speed-riding in Val-d’Isère, France. His last elite heli-speed-ride experience was in April 2025, in Alaska, atop one of the most beautiful and remote mountains in the world. Pat felt the most alive and at peace in the mountains.

In 2019 Pat serendipitously reconnected with a former naval aviator, Kayla Tawoda, who was destined to become the love of his life 12 years after they met in Flight School. Pat and Kayla dated from 2019 until 2023. They fell in love in one of Pat’s favorite places to ski and fly, Chamonix, France where they later got engaged on top of the famous mountain peak the “Aiguille du Midi” of Mont Blanc in the French Alps January 2nd 2023.

Pat and Kayla got married in a beautiful, intimate autumn ceremony in Park City, Utah on October 7th, 2023. Pat and Kayla had a once-in-a-lifetime kind of love story, filled with magic, synchronicity, and compassion. Pat loved her dearly and his Spirit will live on in her always. Kayla’s love for Pat—along with their two pugs and their daughter, Cherish Amara (who left this world July 30th, 2025) — was as immense as the Universe. Kayla always knew and felt a sacred bond with Pat and his special connection with the world around him.

It is impossible to put into words what Pat meant to his family, friends, and fellow Marines. His parents feel eternally blessed for bringing a precious son into the world who grew into a man of faith, honor, and integrity who loved his family fiercely and became loved and respected by so many whose lives he touched. His siblings consider him the essence of a role model, the most remarkable man who never started something he didn’t finish and set the bar high in every aspect of his life while inspiring, nurturing, and supporting his family with his unique mixture of equal parts fun and discipline.

Pat also became a treasured uncle to his two beloved nieces who immediately fell in love with his calming and unflappable demeanor. His friends from the Marine Corps, flying, and hockey communities describe Pat as “a brother in every sense of the term.” One described Pat as an “absolute natural and professional in the Jet or under his Wing.” Pat was a free spirit who loved soaring through the sky, hiking mountain peaks, and leading others with boldness and grace, and was the dependable rock who would leave at the drop of a hat and travel to be there for his loved ones in their times of distress and loss. We know he is still doing the same now. Pat was a deeply spiritual man who believed that Christ’s Holy Spirit was guiding him, and he encouraged others to “trust, and always follow the love.” While he was taken from earth in Divine Timing, his Spirit lives on like a jet soaring over mountain peaks through the sky, ascending into the clouds and chasing the sunset. Pat will be with us forever, and we are eternally grateful for the years we were able to share with him.

Pat is survived by his wife Kayla Tawoda (Daly), parents Terrence and Theresa Daly, sister and brother-in-law Kelley and Nicholas Schwarz and their daughter Madeline, brother and sister-in-law Michael and Lida Daly and their daughter Lily, father-in-law and mother-in-law Tom and Anne Carol Tawoda, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Tommy and Kat Tawoda, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, August 26 from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City, UT. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 27 at 12:00 Noon at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 300 East 11800 South, Draper, UT. Committal Rite with military honors and flyover will follow at the Utah Veteran’s Memorial Park, 17111 South Camp Williams Road, Bluffdale. John Thompson Jr. Obituary

John was born September 5, 1945, in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota, where his father was stationed as an early pilot for Northwest Airlines. Six years later, they moved to Washington State, where John grew up enjoying an idyllic lake life on Lake Meridian in Kent.

John attended Seattle Pacific University before transferring to Washington State University, where he pledged Phi Beta Kappa.

He joined his father at Northwest Airlines (NWA), earning his place on the seniority list in October 1966 as one of the youngest pilots hired by the airline.

During the Vietnam War, John flew Military Air Command (MAC) missions aboard Boeing 320 aircraft. Throughout his career, he captained Boeing 727, DC-10, and Boeing 747 aircraft. He retired in 2005 as a captain of NWA's 747-400, having also flown MAC flights during the Gulf War.

John met his loving wife, Suzanne, during his first year of flying. They married in 1972 and shared 57 years of love and raised three daughters.

John is survived by his wife Suzanne; daughters Sari Jansen, Shelly Tansy, and Sydney Thompson; their husbands Jeremy Jansen, Joe Tansy, and David Applegate; and his four grandchildren, Sterling and Seryn Croswhite, and John and William Jansen. He is also survived by lifelong friends Tom Bantle, Len Evans, and Roy Newton-fellow adventurers whose bond spanned decades of memories and meaning.

John was an avid hunter, golfer, water skier, and a formidable cribbage and poker player. To his daughters and their friends, he was "MacGyver," always ready to fix, build, or figure things out. He loved sharing his knowledge and was always willing to learn alongside others. He was patient, encouraging, and endlessly generous with his time. Most of all, he loved flying-a passion he passed on with joy and pride.

A quiet man, John will be remembered for his kind deeds, steady presence, and thoughtful support. He helped many through difficult times, offering encouragement and practical help-always selflessly and without fanfare. He formed genuine, personal connections, and those close to him knew how deeply he cared, just as he knew how much he was loved in return. Rarely one to speak ill of others, he led by example with humility and strength.

John passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, after a long and valiant battle with cancer. He faced twenty-five years of treatments, procedures, and surgeries without complaint. Even amid his own challenges, he remained a source of comfort and strength for others navigating their own battles with the disease.

John loved God, his family, and his country. He thanked God daily for the wonderful life he lived amongst family and friends. He will be deeply missed by many.

His family invites those who knew him to celebrate his life as he lived it-genuinely and in their own meaningful way, whether through a story, a smile, or doing something once shared together.

In his early years, Tim was adventurous, athletic, and mischievous—the latter trait lasting a lifetime, as those who knew him can attest. Tim developed a fondness for the outdoors in his youth, which ultimately led him to become a well-rounded sportsman, fishing and hunting in beautiful places, such as the northwestern United States, western Canada, the Rocky Mountains, and coastal areas of Mexico and Costa Rica. It was only fitting that Tim moved to the “Sportsman’s Paradise,” Louisiana, at a relatively young age, where he wholly embraced the culture, owning a Lafitte skiff shrimp boat; buying into the best ever fishing “camp,” the Taj Mahal (a residential barge at the mouth of the Mississippi River); and obtaining a license to trap and hunt alligators, among other adventures. Tim instilled in his children a love for the outdoors and taught them to hunt, fish, and appreciate conservationism and the wonders of the sports he loved. If you met Tim later in his life, you’d have no idea he was born and raised in a city, much less in New York. He didn’t mind when people mistook him for an “actual” Cajun—and you certainly would make this mistake if you heard him tell any of his hundreds of “Boudreaux and Thibodeaux” jokes, which he would recount with minimal prodding and maximum recall.

It is difficult to describe Tim in small print because he was so large in life. It might be easier to simply describe him in words, such as these: moral, honorable, funny, family man, devoted, reliable, devout Catholic, upbeat, positive, faithful, and proud, especially of his wife, children, grandchildren and their many accomplishments.

In addition to Pat, Tim is survived by four of his five children, J. Gregory Timothy, Catherine Noel Eppling (Tommy), Elizabeth Timothy (Edward Cangelosi), and Patrick Timothy. He is also survived by his three grandchildren, Grace Noel Kerr (David), Timothy Noel, and Erin Timothy Tomme (Adam); six great grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Tim was preceded in death by his parents, his brother (Raymond J. Timothy), and his son (Richard).

Although Tim lived a long and good life, his passing has still been very difficult for his family and friends because he was such an important and integral part of their daily lives—a treasured patriarch of the family. But there is comfort in knowing that Tim died at peace, surrounded by his family, having received Last Rites just minutes before his last flight, a one-way trip to heaven. “To fly west, my friend, is a flight we all must take for a final check.”

Family and friends are invited to visit with the family on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 312 Lafitte Street, Mandeville, LA 70448 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. A funeral mass will immediately follow the visitation, commencing at noon.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to any service organization affiliated with a branch of the United States military.

Jean Holloway Witt

Ima Jean Holloway Witt was born in Bay City, Texas on August 13, 1939 to John Henry and Ila Williams Holloway. She passed away peacefully at the age of 85 on March 5, 2025, with her husband of 64 years, Gerald, and their children David and Marla, by her side.

Jean grew up on the Texas Gulf Coast in the constant company of her large, loving, extended family. She graduated from Bay City High School in 1958 and attended Wharton County Junior College, where she earned her LVN certificate. Wharton is also where she met her husband Prentice Gerald Witt. They married on April 8, 1960 in Enid, Oklahoma as Gerald completed Air Force pilot training. The young couple moved to Gerald’s base on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where both of their children, Brent David Witt and Marla Witt McCarty, were born and the Texas family discovered firsthand the challenges of living way up north. Upon fulfilling his commitment to the Air Force, Gerald accepted a job with Delta Airlines, moved his family back to Texas and the couple began traveling the world.

They settled on the family farm, the Witt Home Place in Camp Verde. Jeannie died one month shy of their Blue Sapphire (65th) anniversary while she was on the road with her husband, returning from their annual trip to see their son and his family in Florida.

A skilled Impressionistic painter, with an eye for beauty and the talent to interpret what she

imagined, Jean trained at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and studied painting at retreats in the

Texas Hill Country and New Mexico. Her artwork graces the walls of her beloved family, and hangs

in collections in far-lung places. In her creations, she leaves a tangible expression of her joy, and

heart, for all who miss her terribly. We will treasure her gift forever.

Jean loved her family fiercely and her friends dearly. She is survived by her husband, her son David

Witt and wife Jeanna, grandsons and great-grandchildren, Jake, wife Megan and children Babe and

Ace, and Josh, wife Sophie and children Jack and an already adored baby due on Jean’s birthday, her

daughter Marla and husband Brian McCarty, grandchildren, Kyle, Katie and Claire. Jean is preceded

in death by her parents, her siblings Jo Ann Highield, Sue Holloway and John Holloway and many

wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A family visitation is scheduled 5:00 to 7:00 pm, Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at Grimes Funeral

Chapels in Kerrville.

Her funeral will be held 10:00 am, Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at the Center Point Methodist

Church, followed by a graveside service at the Center Point Cemetery where she will be laid to rest.

In lieu of lowers, donations may be made in her name to the charity of your choice or to the Center

Point Methodist Church’s Stained Glass Fund, PO Box 530, Center Point TX 78010.

Joseph Stuckenschneider Obituary

It is with profound sadness that the family of Joseph Alan "Joe" Stuckenschneider, 68, of Union, announces his passing on Wednesday, August 13, 2025. Though his time with us was cut short, he lived a life of joyful exuberance that was full of purpose, faith, and boundless love for his family.

Joe was born in Rolla, Missouri to his late parents, Ken and Rose Stuckenschneider. He was preceded in death by his brothers Jay and Jeff. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Kelly; his siblings John, Jed, Jack, and Joyce; his children Michael (Sarah), Jenny, and Scott (Aleana); and his three adoring grandchildren, Ella, Finn, and Lily.

A deeply devoted Catholic, Joe's faith was the bedrock of his life and a guiding force in everything he did. His love for God was evident not just in his regular attendance at St. Timothy's Church, but in his unwavering kindness, generosity, and compassion for others. His faith was a source of great comfort and strength, and he shared its light with his family and community.

From a young age, Joe was captivated by the sky. He found his true calling early in life, earning his pilot's license before he was old enough to drive. This passion led to a fulfilling career, beginning with his dedicated service in the Air Force where he forged lifelong friendships. He went on to fly for over 33 years with Delta Airlines. For Joe, flying was never just a job; it was a joy, a gift, and an extension of his spirit. He cherished the freedom of the air and the camaraderie he shared with his fellow pilots.

Above all, Joe's greatest source of pride and happiness was his family. As a devoted husband, proud father, and doting grandfather, "Pop-Pop" was the anchor of his family, providing a steady source of support, wisdom, and laughter. He loved nothing more than spending time with his kids and grandchildren, sharing stories and creating cherished memories that will be treasured forever. His enduring love for his family was a testament to his generous heart and the beautiful life he built.

Visitation will take place from 4:00-7:00 pm on Monday, August 18, 2025, at Stith Funeral Home (7500 U.S. Hwy 42, Florence, Kentucky 41042). The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at Saint Timothy's Church (10272 US-42, Union, KY 41091), followed by a burial at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North (205 Eibeck Ln, Williamstown, KY 41097) at 1:00 pm. A celebration of Joe's life will be held at Joe's house following the burial at 4:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption Endowment Fund or the Diocese of Covington Seminarian Education Fund.

OBITUARY           Leon Boyd Newman Sr.

IN THE CARE OF Dillard Memorial Funeral Home & Hillcrest Memorial Park

Sunset SC - Leon B Newman Sr., age 86, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, August 9, 2025.

Leon was born in Anderson, South Carolina, on November 18, 1938, to the late Franklin Burrell Newman and Laura Newman Stevenson. He attended Daniel High School, graduating a year early before matriculating to Clemson College, where he earned a Civil Engineering degree and competed in track and field. As a cornerstone member of the “Tig Thinclads,” Leon held the South Carolina record in the mile for a number of years.

After graduation, Leon followed in his father’s footsteps into aviation. He joined the United States Air Force, flying in excess of 400 sorties during his two tours in the skies of Vietnam. The pinnacle of his Air Force career came as Captain of the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, his hands literally guiding the tip of the spear of America’s nuclear arsenal during the height of the Cold War. After his military tenure, Leon went into commercial aviation, racking up tens of thousands of hours of time while safely “flying the line” for over three decades, ultimately retiring as a Senior Check Airman on the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 for Northwest Airlines.

Leon had an open and generous heart and was a friend to many. When not plying the skies, and well into retirement, one of his favorite daily rituals was breakfast at The Village Inn and the comradery and lifelong friendships of the “Table of Knowledge.”

Having traveled the world over, Leon’s favorite place was Pickens. He was most content outside working on his farm, running cattle, mending fences, bailing hay, planting trees and flowers, driving his old, run down trucks and tractors, or cutting a load of firewood. His love of this place continued as later in life he transferred hundreds of acres of property into conservation easements here in northern Pickens County, a legacy that will continue for all, forever.

Leon is survived by his wife of forty-two years, Linda Gravely Newman; five children: Boyd Newman (Nikki), Brownie Newman (Beth), Laura Prichard (Kevin), Allison Aiken (Tim), and Ansley Cudd (David); ten grandchildren: Lauren, Nathan, Sarah Beth, Beau, Allie, Jackson, Tess, Elliot, Katherine, and Robert; and five great grandchildren. Leon was predeceased by his younger brother, Quincy.

The family would like to say a special thank you to Teresa and Manna Rehab for their special care of Leon since he became sick.

Funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 PM, on Sunday August 17, 2025, in the Chapel of Dillard Funeral Home.

The family will receive those in attendance following the service in the chapel.

A private entombment will take place at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Flowers are accepted or donation can be made to Natural and Trust to celebrate Leon’s love of place at the following website: https://www.naturalandtrust.org/

Additionally, donations may be made to support the local YMCA at pcymca.net
