___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our PCN Flight West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Don's obituary

Don Ray Pierson, 75, of Mesa, Arizona, passed away on March 1, 2025. Born in Rawlins, Wyoming, on October 9, 1949, Don lived a life filled with adventure, service, generosity, and unshakable optimism.

Don served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force and the Alaska Air National Guard, where he flew T-37 Tweets, T-38 Talons, AC-130 Spectre Gunships with Special Operations Command, and C-130 Hercules Tactical Airlift missions. Following his military service, he continued his aviation career with Delta Airlines, flying a multitude of aircraft including the Boeing 727, 737, 757, 767, and Lockheed L-1011 TriStar.

A true enthusiast, Don loved all things mechanical and airborne—cars and trucks, aviation, and RC model airplanes. He was also a proud Eagle Scout and longtime volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America, where he mentored young people in leadership and service.

In 1999, Don’s life changed after a car accident left him a quadriplegic. Yet he never allowed his disability to define him. He refused pity and never wanted to be seen as an inspiration, though his optimism and zest for life said otherwise. He continued to drive, work on truck projects, fish, shoot, ski, and remain deeply involved in the activities he loved. His spirit and sense of humor remained intact, and his desire to help others never wavered. He also never lost his fervor for Christmas, his favorite holiday.

Don is survived by his sons, Mark Pierson, Keith Pierson, and Tru Pierson; his grandchildren Alex Pierson, Ethan Pierson, Quinn Pierson, Ace Pierson, Truance “LT” Pierson Jr., Kieran Pierson, and Kinley Pierson; his brothers, Lee Pierson and Ken Pierson; and his former wives Sandy, Roxanne, and Beverly. He will be remembered for his strength, warmth, kindness, and unwavering desire to help others, no matter the circumstances.

  1. Dear Pierson Family:
I was shocked to find out today that we lost Don. He was a familiar face at our Delta DFW crew lounge and we were able to chat a few times. He was always pleasant and affable.
Later on, after Don’s accident, I went to see him in Phoenix and we even shared a meal together. I suggested to him that he would make a good chief pilot, mentor or even a role model or pilot interviewer because he did not let his disability affect him. He was genuine and gracious and I felt at ease while we talked.
Once again I’m very sorry for your loss but grateful to have known Don. He will be missed. May the Lord be with him.
    Very Sincerely,
    Buddy Candelario
