Very Sad News !

Retired Delta Captain Steve Raphael

From:   Guy B. Snodgrass , Classmates

It is my sad duty once again that I must pass along to you the passing of a dear friend and classmate, Stephen Raphael, who passed away on Friday 28 January in Houston, Texas due to complications from COVID-19. Graduating from the 14th Company he was a member of the Varsity Sailing Team and Captain of the Shields Team. He developed a love for flying starting at the Academy with obtaining his private pilot's license and selected Navy Air at service selection. Prior to flight school, Steve served as Navigator on the U.S.S. Shelton (DD-790) on Yankee Station. While in Pensacola, he took up racing dirt bikes and enjoyed surfing. Steve excelled as a Naval Aviator and during his first P-3 tour was selected early as a Patrol Plane Commander and Instructor Pilot.

Following a tour in the P-3 fleet replacement squadron he resigned his commission and in October 1977 was hired by Delta Air Lines. He became a senior Captain, flying almost every Boeing aircraft Delta had at the time up to the B-767 400ER on international routes, as well as the L-1011. Steve lived mostly in the Dallas/ Fort Worth area of Texas during that time and took up windsurfing on the lakes in Texas, and out in Hawaii, whenever he could get away.

Steve retired from Delta in 2004 and flew Gulfstreams for a charter company, then international luxury 757's for EOS Airlines, across the Atlantic. Steve was later hired by Southwest Air Lines. Until his passing, Steve worked for Southwest as a simulator instructor pilot in the training department.

Steve and his wife Melinda lived on a lake where he took up waterskiing, which became his lifelong recreational passion. In the mid-eighties Steve became involved with competition slalom waterskiing. With a lot of hard work and coaching, Steve won 10 national championships as well as 3 world slalom championships while skiing for team USA.

Steve and his wife Melinda attended our 50th Reunion in Annapolis in October where many of us were able to congratulate him for his many awards as a renowned waterskiing champion.

He is survived by his wife Melinda, an international flight attendant at Delta along with his son Scott from a previous marriage and a granddaughter Sarah Trinity.

Funeral services are pending, and I will send out further information as soon as they are announced.

May he rest in peace.

Mike was born on May 3, 1943 to "Lee" and Roberta Doyle. He graduated from Redondo Union High in 1961 where he lettered in wrestling. Mike had a zest for life and was a natural athlete. His youth was spent at the beach - surfing, swimming, and playing volleyball. Later in life he and his wife Kim loved to travel, golf, ski, and watch classic movies. Mike was a charismatic and outgoing man who was often told he looked like Robert Redford. His younger years were spent working at his father's machine shop, but Mike knew he was destined for more. He worked hard to acquire his pilot's license and had a long career as a commercial airline pilot. He began flying with Golden West, and was hired in 1973 by Western Airlines which later merged with Delta Airlines. During his time with Delta, Mike was based out of Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. While he was based in Utah, Mike met the love of his life, Kimberly Betts. Mike and Kim were married in 1991 and blended their two families into one. Joanne met Jim McCready in Hawaii in February 1967.  They were married on July 19th 1969 in Chilton Wisconsin and then moved to Arizona and California.

Soon their love gave birth to a son Andrew and a daughter Victoria.  They settled in Seattle Washington in 1981 where they lived for the next seventeen years.  Jim was a pilot for Delta and Joanne immersed herself in being a wife, mother and volunteer for numerous organizations.  From her beloved church, Federal Way United Methodist Church, the PTA, playing in the hand bell chorus, and other clubs and organizations she generously gave her time and efforts to make other’s lives better.

Memorial Services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 9th at 10:30 am at East Cobb Presbyterian Church in Marietta, GA with military burial services at 2:30 pm at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA.

Hugh was born Dec. 29th, 1943 in Ligonier, Pennsylvania to Harry and Loraine Ross Murphy. Hugh's favorite memories are those of large family reunions on the 4th of July and at Christmas on his mother's family farm with his older sister Patricia and twin sister Joan.

Hugh graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1965 with a B.S. in Music Education and accepted a job teaching band in Oil City, PA. However, before beginning that position, Hugh was called for a physical related to the draft. He decided to apply for Air Force flight school and after a single semester of teaching, Hugh joined the Air Force in January 1966. Hugh completed flight school in May 1967 and spent four years on active duty – one of which was served in Vietnam. He was awarded many honors for his service including the Distinguished Flying Cross.

After serving in the Air Force until 1971, Hugh became a Delta Pilot Captain from 1972-2003. Hugh married Dianna Sue Cornell on July 3rd, 1982 and had three children; Rachel, Matthew and Sarah. He has served as a faithful member, choir director and deacon with East Cobb Presbyterian Church for close to 35 years.

After Hugh retired from Delta, he returned to his music education passions and taught from 2006-2011 at Cherokee Christian Schools in Woodstock, GA. as an elementary and middle school music and band teacher.

Hugh became an avid gardener and cook, famous for his incredible tomatoes and huge Thanksgiving day meals shared with family, friends and neighbors alike. Hugh's abundant generosity and 'Dad-jokes' were known by all. He also dedicated committed time to local choirs and ensembles who entertained at local community centers. One of his favorite regular events were his ROMEO lunches (Really Old Men Eating Out) with his closest friends.

Hugh married Carolyn Hallstrom on December 20th, 2016. They enjoyed lots of travel visiting all the shared grandchildren in Arizona, Pennsylvania and South Carolina. Their shared interests surrounding faith, hosting and service enriched their relationship of five years. Few merged families experience the blessings enjoyed by these two.

Hugh Murphy is survived by sisters Patricia Schue and Joan Bundy; wife Carolyn Hallstrom Murphy; daughter Rachel Murphy Hyder (son-in-law Josh Hyder and grandchildren Eve, Bryson, Miriam and Susanna); son Matthew Murphy (Sabrina) and daughter Sarah Murphy. John Jancuski, surrounded by family, went home to be with the Lord on January 18, 2022, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. He was 82. John was born on August 28, 1939 in New Eagle, Pennsylvania to John and Helen Alexander Jancuski, and was raised in Finleyville, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Pennsylvania State University in 1961, he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy the same year. As a Navy pilot, John served two (2) tours in the Vietnam War aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kittyhawk. On June 16, 1962, John married Suzanne (Suzy) Louise Curtis of Arlington, Virginia. After serving over eight years on active duty, John continued service to his country in the U.S. Navy Reserves, retiring in November 1983 at the rank of Captain (O6). In 1970, John relocated his family to Stone Mountain, Georgia upon embarking on a 28 ½ year career as a pilot with Delta Airlines. An avid tennis player, John loved to travel and experience the various cultures of the world with his beloved, Suzy. In 1999, John retired from Delta Airlines at the rank of Captain and, together with Suzy, decided to build a log cabin on the top of a North Georgia mountain ridge. Their family cabin, nicknamed “The Eagles Nest,” immediately became a place to rest and enjoy God’s creation with family and friends. John enjoyed going anywhere in his red BMW Z3 … with the top down, of course.

A loving husband and father, trusted friend, and the oldest of two, he is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his bride of 59 ½ years; his brother, three children, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren: brother, Danny Jancuski (Mary Ann) of Gastonville, Pennsylvania; son, Robert Jancuski of Middlesex, North Carolina; daughter, Jill Althoff (Michael) of Hendersonville, North Carolina; and daughter, Julie Maher of Stone Mountain, Georgia; grandchildren: Kyle and Abby Althoff, Julianna and John Robert Jancuski, and Hailey Maher; great-grandchildren: Brayden, Colton and Jaxson Althoff.

John was an esophageal cancer survivor, having been diagnosed and treated in 1996. John and his family were blessed with 25 years of additional life after his cancer treatment, a wonderful gift that enabled John not only to meet and have relationships with all of his grandchildren, and two of his great grandchildren, but also led John to surrender his life to Jesus Christ.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, January 25th, at 11:00am, at Crossroads Presbyterian Church, 5587 Redan Road, Stone Mountain, Georgia. The service will be livestreamed at www.crossroads-pc.com. There will be a mask mandate for the service, which will be limited to 75 attendees. A burial service at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, with full military honors, will be forthcoming at date yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of John to the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org
