PNA/WA/DL F/A Linda Pfister, widow of WA/DL Capt. Hank Pfister

~ IN MEMORY ~

PNA/WA/DL F/A Linda Pfister, widow of WA/DL Capt. Hank Pfister

FEBRUARY 28, 1943 – AUGUST 14, 2022

From friends and colleagues:

Flight attendant Linda Pfister died on Sunday, August 14 after a time of experiencing dementia and physical limitations.  Linda was born in 1943 and began her flying career with Pacific Northern Airlines.  When Western bought PNA and the flight attendant contracts were finally merged in the early 1970's, she was part of the SEA WAL base.  She continued flying (taking leaves for the births of her sons Ian and Bruce) all the way through the 70's and 80's--and transitioning with us all to Delta Airlines in 1987.  She married her second husband, pilot Hank Pfister, and continued to fly until Hank's retirement.  She worked Hank's final flight and at the end of it they taxied the plane in to the gate in SEA with the fire trucks creating a tunnel of water for them to taxi through.  She was in the cockpit waving out the window as they pulled into the gate.  She retired that day, too.

Linda and Hank were great friends to us all, and they will be missed.

NWA Capt. Haven Seldon Hill

~ IN MEMORY ~

NWA Capt. Haven Seldon Hill

November 6, 1939 ~ August 7, 2022

From our Northwest Airlines friends and colleagues:  Obits (rnpa.org)

https://rnpa.org/memoriam/obits/296-haven-hill

Captain Haven S. Hill, age 82, passed away on August 07, 2022, shortly after moving to Loveland, Colorado, where his younger daughter lives with her family. The cause of death was an intracranial hemorrhage.

Haven Hill was born in Duluth, Minnesota to parents John and Vera Hill. He had a healthy upbringing on the Minnesota Iron Range. To know Haven is also to know his wife, Roberta. They were almost inseparable, known to each other since the 10th grade at Duluth Central High School. In the age of sock hops and school dances, the couple started “going steady”. Haven was a good student and a rock-solid athlete in football, basketball, and track. After high school, Haven secured a congressional appointment to the Air Force Academy. In late June of 1957, he entered the AFA class of 1961 at Lowry AFB, Denver, CO. Meanwhile, Roberta began her RN medical training at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth.

In 1957, because the Air Force Academy campus at Colorado Springs was still under construction, Haven began his Academy years at Lowry AFB, in Denver, CO. During his first two years at the Academy, Haven participated in varsity football and basketball. He also underwent the physical move and transition to the Academy’s new facilities at Colorado Springs. Haven was a member of the Air Force Academy’s 3rd graduating class on June 07, 1961; Secretary of the Air Force Eugene Zuckert was the commencement speaker.

Following AFA graduation, Haven and Roberta joined the many recent graduates in marriage ceremonies, their wedding on July 01, 1961. It is notable that in total they would enjoy 61 years of marriage.

The Air Force pipeline had a slot for pilot training set aside for 2/Lt. Haven Hill at Vance AFB at Enid, Oklahoma. Pilot training and married life went well for Haven and Roberta, and Haven’s next training assignment was to Tinker AFB at Oklahoma City for transition to the Douglas C-124 Globemaster. Known to Air Force flight crews as ‘Old Shakey,’ the C-124 was one of the more complex reciprocating engine aircraft in the Air Force inventory. After Tinker AFB, Haven’s permanent assignment was to the 62nd Troop Carrier Wing (Military Air Transport Service - MATS) at McChord Air Force Base, Tacoma, WA.

The 62nd Troop Carrier Wing was a MATS special mission troop carrier wing with long-range tenacles, mainly serving Alaska, the Aleutians, and the entire Pacific. Haven, no doubt, found the C-124 flying excellent preparation for his airline career to follow.Obit Photo Haven Hill with wife.2

Haven and Roberta’s marriage had roots in the military and was a truly remarkable marriage. The couple produced three wonderful children: daughters Linda and Sally and son Steve. This family’s legacy of hard work, led by example, inspired many to also become either an RN or an airline pilot. Son Steve is a Delta pilot based at MSP and Sally’s husband is a pilot with Frontier Airlines in Denver. Daughter Sally is a retired nurse and 2 granddaughters are currently practicing nurses.

The official date of Haven's hire by Northwest Airlines is Sept. 13, 1965. His initial crew position was the classic new hire Second Officer on the Boeing 727. This was followed by a series of upgrades, the first to Second Officer on the Boeing 707 series at MSP. At that time, Boeing 720/320 First Officer preceded an initial Captain upgrade on the 727. In 1969, he completed his initial Captain upgrade in the Boeing 727 and thereafter, pretty much stayed glued to domestic flying. During his long career, Haven became one of NWA’s high flight time pilots on the Boeing 727. When his seniority permitted, Haven upgraded to Captain on the DC-10. This became his aircraft until his official retirement on November 11, 1994.

Haven participated in various sports activities including basketball on the NWA employee team. He also enjoyed golf and tennis, the latter he shared with Roberta. He and his family spent many weekends at “the cabin”, fishing and boating. It was no secret that the couple had their lifetime quota of Minnesota winters, so toward his retirement, Haven started looking west to their vacation home in a beach condo complex in Encinitas, CA. The beautiful coastal town fully pleased the couple for 28 years, until their needed move to CO, due to Haven’s increasing health issues.

Our colleague, Haven Hill, is survived by his wife of 61 years Roberta, daughters Linda and Sally, and their son Steve, plus nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

We NWA pilots have been honored to have known and worked with Haven Hill.

Obituary : JEFF EGGLESTON

Jeff Eggleston, 61 of West Seattle, Washington passed away quietly at home surrounded by the people he loved the most, his three children and his wife, Loly on September 19, 2022 after a courageous 12 year battle with cancer. Born on May 19, 1961 to Wayne and May Eggleston in Seattle, Washington.

He had recently resumed fly fishing, going on a few memorable trips with his boys over the last couple years.

After his cancer was diagnosed, he became a passionate mentor, volunteering with Imerman Angels from 2013 to present to provide his positive support and inspiration to other patients. He led by example, living life to the fullest even when he wasn't feeling up to par-including a three mile hike with his family at Mt Rainier the beginning of September.

Obituary :

Herdic "Dic" W. King of Upper Nyack passed away on June 12, 2022, at the age of eighty-four. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and moved to Ramsey, New Jersey, where he graduated from Ramsey High School in 1955. In 1959, he was granted a degree from The Ohio State University. A year later he was recruited by the U.S. Navy and entered Aviation Officer Candidate School; three months later he emerged as a brand-new US Navy Ensign... a "ninety-day wonder," an officer on his way to flight training at Pensacola Naval Air Station, Florida.

From that point on, Dic was good enough to qualify for single engine flight training in the Navy's supersonic fighter, the F8 Crusader. Eventually, flying off the Navy's newest super carriers USS Forrestal and USS Saratoga, he compiled 450 carrier landings, including 125 at night! Dic also flew as an instructor with the Navy's Blue Angels flight demonstration team, helping them transition to the new F4 Phantom.

Following his retirement from the Navy after 8 years, Dic flew for Pan Am, then Delta Airlines, flying the Boeing 727 and Airbus A310 all over the skies of the USA & Europe. He would be smiling all the way!

Dic was an avid sailor. His love for the sport started in the 1970's, when he joined the Nyack Boat Club on the Hudson River. Dic was an active volunteer at Nyack, where he became Rear Commodore. To promote sailing on the river, he was one of the founders of The Tappan Zee Cruising Fleet. Dic purchased his first sailboat, "Foxy Lady", when he joined Nyack Boat Club. This was the first in a long line of boats that he actively cruised with his wife, Pat and raced with friends. While at Nyack Boat Club, he sailed in a number of Governor's Cup races in New York Harbor. From 1987 on, Dic focused his sailing around Buzzards Bay, which he often said "Was the best sailing on the East Coast." Dic loved to race. When the boat was located at Quissett Harbor, in Falmouth, MA, Dic frequently participated in the Vineyard Cup series as well as the Figawi, which is sailed between Hyannis and Nantucket, MA.

Dic is survived by his wife Patricia G. Kocak his son Darin King, wife Nazzarena and grandson Devin. In addition, he is survived by his sister Nancy Levin, her husband Michael, nieces Nanette, Michelle and Susan.

Details of the celebration of Dic's life will be communicated at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Nyack Boat Club

(59 Gedney Street, Nyack, NY 10960), Junior Sailing Program, to further the education of sailing on the Hudson.

Captain Raney W. (Wally) Walbaum, age 91, died at home in Santa Barbara, CA August 02, 2022. At the end of his life Wally was receiving hospice care at home. He went peacefully given he was ready.

Wally was born January 14, 1931, at Harvey Wells, North Dakota, to Edna (Oleson) Walbaum and Raney August Walbaum. He was the youngest of three children, preceded in birth by sisters Ruth and Dorothy.

During his high school years Wally lived in Detroit Lakes, MN. He was an excellent student, an Eagle Scout, and excelled as an athlete. "Wally was one of the best three athletes to have ever played at Detroit Lakes, if not the greatest athlete to have played," said 1949 DLHS graduate Sis Olson, also a close friend of Walbaum since they were ten years old. Many senior citizens, long term residents of Detroit Lakes, MN, report that Wally Walbaum was the ‘Track Superstar’ of his time. There is more: in addition to track, Wally Walbaum was also an exceptional basketball and football player. His basketball skills earned him high honors as a season high scorer. The Detroit Lakes High School honored Wally Walbaum (Class of 1949) by admitting him to their athletic Hall of Honor.

A track and field sports scholarship from the University of Minnesota assisted Wally in his college studies. He was by all definitions a serious student who opted for an academic major in business administration studies. However, it was his athletic skills that acclaimed the name Wally Walbaum. During his athletic tenure at the U. of Minnesota (1949-1953) Wally set pole vaulting records that remain unbeaten today. And he set those records with a bamboo pole! In his senior year (1953) the University of Minnesota Athletics Department named Wally captain of the Gophers track and field team and awarded him the coveted Wells Hodgson track award. He was credited by Minnesota Athletics Department as being one of their top five athletes in the University of Minnesota history.

While there Wally was an active member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and graduated from the University of Minnesota Spring Quarter, 1953.

As per Wally’s overall ascent to excellence, he entered the military via a non-standard track. In September 1953 Wally entered the Navy as a Naval Aviation Cadet (NAVCAD)… yes there were college graduate NAVCADs. His military, preflight and pilot training at NAS Pensacola, Florida lasted 18 months. In April 1955 during his commissioning and ‘Winging’ ceremony Wally Walbaum was designated the Top Student in his flight training class.

Wally’s first post training assignment was to VMA-331 at MCAF Opalocka to fly the Douglas AD-5. Perhaps flying the AD-5 explains why Wally’s right leg was larger than the left. In 1958 VMA-331 transitioned to the Douglas A4D2 Skyhawk. During his time with VMA-133 Wally frequently participated in flight operations from the aircraft carrier USS Leyte (CV-32).

Wally separated from the active Marine Corps in late March of 1959. Northwest Airlines hired Wally April 04, 1959. His initial training was as a copilot in the Douglas DC-4 and DC-6. He flew the DC-6 for a little over two years before upgrading to the DC-7. Thereafter he flew second officer in the Boeing 720/320, followed by a return to the copilot’s position on the Lockheed Electra (L-188) and the Boeing 720/320. The remainder of his career was spent as captain on the Lockheed L-188, Boeing 727, Boeing 720/320, DC-10 and the classic 747.

The year following his initial hire with NWA, Wally married Sandra Jones. Two wonderful daughters came from this marriage: Kim Walbaum and Jodi Walbaum-Vaniman. In 1978 Wally and Sandra parted their lives and were divorced.

Wally married Cheryl Wilson in 1985, the year before his medical retirement.

In the 1960s a group of Marine Aviators in the Twin Cities known as the RAMS, (Raggedy Ass Marines) collectively purchased a cabin on Lake Mille Lac northwest of the Twin Cities in Minnesota. This group of military alumni shared interests in fishing and hunting, especially waterfowl hunting. Wally enjoyed the company of these men and their spirited camaraderie.

In 1986 Wally medically retiree from NWA flying due to lower back disorders. Hardly surprising considering the hard landings from pole vaulting.

Two years before his death Wally lost his wife Cheryl Wilson.

There is little doubt that Wally Walbaum was for those of us who knew him a most memorable personality. He never ceased to uplift our spirits, each encounter with Wally was a positive moment in our day. We are profoundly grateful to have known this remarkable man.

JIMMY HAYNES OBITUARY

Jimmy Ray Haynes~ A Life Well Lived

Jimmy Ray Haynes, 82, passed away on Sep 13, surrounded by his loving family.

Jimmy was born December 12,1939, to Clarence and Jessamine Haynes in Jacksonville, Arkansas. He had 4 brothers and one sister. He graduated from Fair Park High School in 1957, in Shreveport, LA.

Jimmy and Charline Bowlin were married on April 18, 1957, and they spent 65 wonderful years together, traveling the world, raising a family, and serving the Lord.

Following his high school graduation, Jimmy supported his family by throwing a paper route, but his childhood dream was to become a pilot. He started flying lessons at age 17, training in a Piper Cub.

While he was busy building his flying career (to include crop dusting in a Stearman biplane for Campbell Air Service, and flying helicopters and float planes off the Gulf Coast for Chevron Oil) Charline was busy with their children... Jimmy, Teri, and Jeff.

In 1966, Jim took a long shot and applied to Delta Airlines. While he was flying offshore, Charline got the offer phone call, and was thrilled to relay the news to Jimmy that he was hired! This began the adventure of a lifetime of travel for the family. Jim made Captain in 1976 and flew another 20 years, retiring in 1997.

Flying, while exciting and rewarding, was not the most important thing to Jim. He was a committed Christian who talked the talk and walked the walk. He and Charline went on many mission trips around the world, he taught Sunday school, served as a deacon, and was always available for volunteer work on church events, as well as disaster relief.

Jimmy is survived by his wife Charline, children Teri and Scott Reynolds and Jeff and Lori Haynes. Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren and families include: Meagan, Craig, Luke and Leila Wooten; Wes Reynolds; Lexi, Collin and Lorelai Higgins. Kathryn, Luis and Lori MTZ Arredondo; Jacob, Heidy, Emma, and Charline Rose Haynes; Bradley Haynes. Jimmy is preceded in death by his son, Jimmy Ray Haynes, Jr., his parents, and his 5 siblings, along with many cousins, aunts, and uncles.

Visitation will be on Saturday, September 17, 2022 from 12:15PM to 1:00PM at Harrell Funeral Home, 100 Heritage Drive, Austin, TX. Funeral services will be 1:00PM at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Phillips Cemetery.

Obituary :  Philip Rush "Rusty" Haley, III, transitioned to his Heavenly home, surrounded by his beloved wife, daughters, and some of his dearest friends, on September 13, 2022.

Rusty was born in Baton Rouge, LA, on February 3, 1950, to Philip Rush Haley, Jr., and Velma Rollins Haley. Rusty's love of meteorology and aviation began at an early age. Rusty knew that he wanted to become a pilot when he was in the third grade. By age 16, he had flown his first solo flight. During his freshman year of college, he became one of the founding flight instructors of the aerospace studies program at Louisiana Tech University. By age 22, he was the second youngest pilot ever to be hired by a commercial airline. Rusty flew for Southern Airways, Republic Airways, Northwest Airlines, and Delta Airlines. After 42 years of flying, Rusty retired from Delta Airlines as captain of the 747-400, flight instructor, and the #1 pilot in seniority. Although he was awarded many accolades throughout his years as "Captain Haley," one of his proudest designations was a plaque in the cafeteria of the Delta training facility in Atlanta that read, "Rusty's Table." He loved aviation and meteorology until the very end. Just one week before his transition to Heaven, God graciously allowed Rusty to sit in a cockpit one more time and make his final weather observation for the FAA.

Despite his illustrious career as a pilot, Rusty's first and foremost priority was telling people about his relationship with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He loved people and was passionate about sharing Jesus with others. He was known to share his faith with friends, family members, and strangers. He served the Lord faithfully through teaching Sunday school, supporting missionaries, creating and training a church security team, and diligently praying for others. While having to be in isolation over the past 14 months, he could no longer attend church in person, but every Sunday, he hosted "home church" for his immediate family, complete with PowerPoint presentations and hymns sung by some of his favorite country artists.

Everyone who knew Rusty knew that he loved Jesus and his precious wife of more than 44 years, Carol. Rusty took pride in telling everyone that he made her coffee every morning "because it's in the Bible…he brews." He loved telling jokes and had a nickname for everyone, famously dubbing his mother-in-law as "The Bat." He loved playing jokes on people and was known for his pranks. Even as he battled cancer, he made sure to take a few rubber mice and spiders to the hospital so he could scare his nurses. He never complained about his illness or aggressive cancer treatments. He always thanked his medical team and was known to build rapport with them. He immediately became well-known at Baptist East as he wore bunny ears while distributing Easter candy to the staff.

Rusty is survived on Earth by his wife; three daughters, Sarah Cannon (Seth), Dr. Rachel Dickens (Jon), and Anna Carlisle (Nathan); three grandsons, Everett, Freddy, and Sammy Cannon; and younger brother, Dr. Randy Haley (Ashley) of Leesville, Louisiana, with whom he spoke on the phone every morning. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, brothers in law, cousins, dear friends, and his cat, Miss Scarlett.

Services will be held at Mid America Baptist Theological Seminary at 2 pm, Saturday, September 17. A graveside service will be held at a later date.
