NCA/RC/NWA Capt. William "Bill" Peter Studer

~ IN MEMORY ~

USAF veteran, NCA/RC/NWA Capt. William "Bill" Peter Studer

September 07, 1930 - November 23, 2023

https://www.whitefuneralhomes.com/obituary/william-bill-studer

Studer, William Peter “Bill”, loving husband of Edna for 64 years, and father of four, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2023, in Lakeville MN at the age of 93. Bill was born in Farmington on September 7, 1930, to Amandus and Hazel (Finn) Studer, and was raised in Lakeville MN. Bill graduated from Lakeville High School in 1948, and continued to work on the family farm until he joined the Air Force in 1956. While in the Air Force, he met the love of his life, Edna LeGate, on a blind date at Arizona State University, and they were married at the University chapel on June 6th, 1959. Bill retired from active duty as a fighter pilot later in 1959, staying active in the Air Force Reserves until the mid-70s.

Bill brought his new bride back to Lakeville and again began working on the family farm. He then was hired as a pilot with North Central Airlines, and stayed with them through mergers as Republic Airlines, and then Northwest Airlines until he retired from flying in 1986. Bill’s love of farming ran deep, and he never stopped being a farmer. He and Edna purchased the family farm in 1966, building a home for his family there not far from his parents’ home. The family farm continued to be a gathering place for all of Amandus and Hazel’s descendants, and Bill and Edna put in a lot of effort to make everyone feel welcome. He was an avid collector of farm equipment, especially old Allis Chalmers tractors and loved going to farm auctions. When the family farm was sold in 2003 and he ‘retired’, he then rented a nearby farm and continued to raise sweet corn and tend a large vegetable garden. While he raised a variety of crops over the years, he became known as the guy who had ‘the best sweet corn’ and continued to grow sweet corn to sell and give away until well into his eighties.

Bill was proud of his time serving in the Air Force, as well as his career as a commercial pilot. He flew many different single and multi-engine planes during his flying days, including the T-6 Texan, T-28 Trojan, T-34 Mentor, T-38 Talon, F-80 Shooting Star, F-84 Thunderjet, F-86 Sabre, F-100 Super Sabre, A-20 Invader, DC-3, Convair 580, DC-9, MD-80, and 727. Later in his life he acquired an F-86H and donated it to the City of Lakeville, where it became part of the Veteran’s Memorial at Aronson Park.

Aside from his family, Bill’s true passion was golf, and he completed his last round in July of 2023. His home office was filled with many golf trophies, and he was especially proud of his time playing in the airline world championship in 1973, as well as many rounds on some of the top courses in the world (including shooting par on a blustery day on the old course at St. Andrews when he was in his fifties).

Bill was the 10th of Amandus and Hazel’s 14 children and was the last living member of that mighty clan. He was preceded in death by his parents Amandus and Hazel; siblings, Eugene, Robert (Rosario “Chari”), James, Patricia (Sidney) Miller, Donna (Phil) Paulak, Marge, Phyllis, Joan, Mary Ann, Thomas (Claire), Dorothy “Dot” (Dick) Lorentson, Dennis, and an infant sister. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Edna; children, Debbie (Merly) Larson, Margie, Jim (Tami), and Rob (Colleen); grandchildren, Marah, Jenna, Max, Hannah (Alex), Keara, Taryn (Patrick), Derek, Kendra (Chris), and Casey (Lee); great grandchildren, Cora, Gabriel, Samuel, Bree, Abby, Aiden, and Ethan; sisters-in-law, Chari, and Claire Studer, and also by many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday December 1, 2023, at 11:30 AM at All Saints Catholic Church, 19795 Holyoke Ave., Lakeville with a visitation on Thursday November 30 from 4-7 PM at the White Funeral Home, Lakeville (952-469-2723), and 1 hour prior to Mass at the church. Interment, All Saints cemetery. The family has requested that any memorial donations go to St Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Obituary for JD Daniel

Mark Twain said “Find a job you enjoy doing and you will never work a day in your life. By that definition, J. DeMoye “JD” Daniel never worked a day in his life.

Born in Bivins, Cass County, Texas on May 5, 1936, JD passed from this life on November 24, 2023. Two children, Jay DeMoye Daniel and Susan Lynn Daniel, predeceased him, as did his parents, J.K. and Lucille Parker Daniel.

Children Dale DeMoye Daniel and wife Rebecca, Cindy Daniel Furr and husband Mike, Tim Daniel, and Sherry Daniel survive their father. Grandchildren Virginia Robertson, Dale DeMoye Daniel Jr., Cristin & Heath Crofford, Doug & Kodi Burdette, Mandy Daniel, Holly Daniel, Lensi Daniel, Kayle Nichols, Maddie Dayberry, and 15 great-grandchildren round out the family that called him PawPaw.

Gwen Daniel Goodpasture and her husband, Tommy, along with niece Shanie and nephew Eddie loved him as their favorite brother and uncle.

JD started work at age 9, throwing daily newspapers for the Odessa American, going door-to-door collecting payments from the 350 homes on his route every Saturday morning. He partnered with his father at age 14, owning and managing rental properties. At age 18, he enlisted in the Army National Guard, then transferred to the United States Air Force. At discharge, he was employed by Delta Airlines where he finished #1 in his training class. Simultaneous to his job at Delta, he was an active partner in a 350-acre Angus cattle operation. Their ranch earned honors from the Texas & Southwest Cattle Raisers Association as well as awards for soil and water conservation.

JD was a pilot’s pilot and took to aircraft with a passion that was unrivaled. He began flying and then private instructing while in the Air Force, holding a variety of ratings in his aviation career. At his retirement from Delta Airlines, after 32 years, he had held every pilot’s position within the company. He continued his career for an additional 25 years for BCM Corporation, piloting their Boeing 737 all around the world. When asked when he thought he might hang up his wings, he pointed out “I’m the only pilot that knows where to get a good cheeseburger in Kazakhstan.”

In addition to his paying gigs, JD owned and piloted several private aircraft, including a World War II era Boeing Stearman and his beloved Vietnam-era Beechcraft T-34 Mentor. His aircraft collection took him to air shows all over the country, performing aerobatics and combat maneuvers with a troupe of colorful characters, even performing in the world-famous Oshkosh, Wisconsin EAA AirVenture.

There were many awards, trophies, and accolades but the most prestigious was the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award recognizing over 50 years of aircraft safety.

But wait! There’s more. JD was an avid outdoorsman – bird hunting, walking, running, biking, and competing in skeet shooting, boxing, baseball, and tennis. His favorite destination, the Hawaiian island O’ahu, afforded breathtaking views while he hiked the trails to the top of Diamond Head.

JD’s beloved family and countless friends and colleagues take comfort that missing him will be replaced by knowing he lived his best life to the fullest and without regret – bucket lists were checked off and diems were carped!

WA/DL F/A Patti Maxey, wife of WA/DL Capt. Bill Maxey

From: Buck Stevens <aufans@me.com>

~ IN MEMORY ~

Western/Delta Flight Attendant Patti Maxey

     (1944-2023)

Wife of WA/DL Capt. Bill Maxey

Service dates - Nov. 15, 1967 - Sept. 1997

Patricia Lee Kennedy Maxey was born in Cleveland, Ohio but grew up with her four brothers in South Charleston, West Virginia.  She had to learn to enjoy playing boy games which gave her the great competitive spirit and “spunk” that remained with her always. After completing high school, she drove herself West to Colorado where the beauty of the mountains captured her and she started a new life. Hired by Western Airlines as a flight attendant in 1967 she embraced the adventurous spirit and travel opportunities that came with that career.  She flew out of Denver, Colorado mostly on Western’s “Islander”  route to Hawaii.  She met and married her first husband in Denver, who later died in a traffic accident.

She became a very successful Realtor working in Denver and started flying to London when Western was awarded the route. She gave up her real estate business as she joined hands with a Western pilot and moved to Salt Lake City, Western’s new hub. She married Bill Maxey at Ixtapa, Mexico in 1983.

Boating became a large part of their lives and they decided to live on a lake in Idaho and later, a lake in Alabama where she completed her 30 year flying career internationally with Delta Airlines out of Atlanta. Patti said, “I’ve seen it all from the air now let’s see it from the road”, and the Motorhome lifestyle became the way to go.  All the lower 48, Mexico, Alaska, Western Canada, and the Maritimes were all destinations but the emphasis was on the journey.

Patti was an outstanding cook who enjoyed large parties not overlooking anything. She had a real talent for oil painting, and a great eye for color, which reflected in the paintings that she produced. She was an avid fly fisherman, and was certified in the ocean in scuba diving. She was a beautiful, snow skier and a member of the ski patrol. She loved to waterski and all water sports of any type. She even tried hang gliding, but disliked the grasshoppers on landing.

She truly embraced the active lifestyle and enjoyed and loved the many people that she came in contact with throughout her life. Patti was always a compassionate and caring person. Not only in words, but in deeds. After seeing a picture of a Vietnamese baby with a horrendous hemangioma covering most of her face, she said that she couldn’t just stand by and do nothing. She orchestrated the reconstructive surgery in Madrid, Spain, for the baby. She traveled once to Vietnam to deliver the baby’s medicine and to Spain three times to facilitate numerous operations on the child.

She also trained and became an EMT for her local volunteer fire department helping others in need. She was active for 10 years. She leaves us with great memories, loving life to the fullest.  She was the “real deal” sharing her enthusiasm and love with everyone she met in her journey through life. After a short illness the Lord reached out, and carried her home.  Well done my true and faithful servant. You are truly home now.

Navy veteran, NWA Capt. Claude John Benedict

APRIL 23, 1938 – NOVEMBER 6, 2023

Notice of passing…..RNPA member retired Northwest Airlines pilot Captain Claude John Benedict, age 85.  Captain Benedict joined Northwest Airlines 04-07-1969.  He is survived by his wife Eloise, and by their daughters and their daughter’s families.

OBITUARY for Claude John Benedict

Robert Toale & Sons Celebration of Life Center

Claude John Benedict, 85, of Lakewood Ranch, FL passed away peacefully on Monday, November 6, 2023, surrounded by family.

Claude was born April 23, 1938 to Ralph and Anna Benedict in St. Louis, MO.

He graduated from McBride High School in 1955 and went on to study engineering at St. Louis University. Following college Claude was commissioned into the Navy where he trained as a Naval Aviator in Pensacola and Kingsville. Upon earning his wings, his orders took him to Okinawa, Japan. Before leaving the states, he married the love of his life, Eloise on January 5, 1963, whom he had known for many years, first meeting her when he would deliver groceries to her family in St. Louis. They celebrated 60 years of marriage earlier this year!

After the Navy, Claude settled the family in Minnesota and he launched his career as a Northwest Airlines pilot. Claude loved to fly and never thought of his 30 years with the airline as a job. He rarely drew attention to himself and when people he didn’t know asked him what he did he often would tell them he was a heavy equipment operator! During the 70’s energy crisis when the airlines would lay off pilots for a few months at a time, Claude exemplified his incredible work ethic and humility to sustain his family taking jobs ranging from gas station attendant, tree trimmer, cook, water proofer, and cab driver. When an especially long lay-off occurred, Claude decided to drive trucks. He rented a semi, drove it around town for a while and then took the Class A Commercial Drivers test, passing his first time. Claude’s dedication was rewarded in the end – his final home base with the airline was on Oahu where he flew the 747 back and forth to Asia.

Claude was an explorer at heart – he loved hiking & camping with his daughter Donna in the mountains surrounding Seattle, volksmarching in all 50 states with his wife, Eloise, and always open to a new craft beer with his daughter Diane. While in Hawaii he and Eloise joined a sailing club and crewed the Free Spirit around the islands. When their crewing days were over, they turned to bigger boats and took multiple cruises enjoying the tropical islands of the Caribbean. He and Eloise also recently completed their tour of every Major League Baseball stadium. They loved baseball – the Cardinals, Twins and Nationals were their favorites, and they passed this love of the game to their family. After moving to Florida, they were afforded the opportunity to attend many spring training games. Even at 85 years old Claude’s sense of adventure was not diminished, demonstrated recently when he and Eloise on a whim jumped on the car train out of Florida to head to Virginia so that they could visit their great-grandsons and attend a late season Nationals game in Washington DC.

The center of Claude’s life was his faith in God. A lifelong Catholic, Claude drew his strength from the sacraments as a daily mass communicant. He exemplified and made tangible the love of God to every person he met, most especially to his family. Claude was a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus; first in the Holy Family Council in Virginia and currently in the Sts. Cosmos & Damian Council in Florida. He was a man of quiet service, satisfying the smallest needs of anyone around him. It was hard to get the man to sit down!

In addition to his parents, Claude was preceded in death by his brother, Donald, and his sisters Ruth (Ed) Mosley and Betty (Ambrose) Perotta as well as a niece, Debbie Perotta. He is survived by Eloise, his wife of 60 years, and their two daughters, Diane (David) Beauchamp and Donna (James) Hamm as well as seven grandchildren – Nicholas (Marissa), Thomas (Annie), Katherine, Mark, and Teresa Beauchamp, Anna (Steven) Mercer and Rachel (Sebastian) LLeras. His was blessed with two great-grandsons who adored their Papa – Finbarr & Cillian Beauchamp. He also leaves behind in-laws, Janice Kempker and Bob & Kathy Adrian as well as many nieces and nephews: Ken & Mary, Linda & Tom Muller, Tony, Joe & Karen, Ed, and Tom Perotta, Denise & Scott Morice, Chris & Brian Bauer, Matthew & Cindy Kempker, Neil, Todd & Kaleigh Adrian.

Wake to be held at Robert Toale and Sons Celebration of Life Center, 4310 Solutions Lane, Bradenton, FL on Sunday, November 19, 2023 from 5 to 7pm, with rosary at 6:30pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church, 12905 SR 70 East, Lakewood Ranch, FL at 10am on Monday, November 20, with burial immediately following mass at Sarasota National Cemetery at 12:30pm.

Memorials, if you so desire, are requested to St. Jude Children’s Hospital through Anna’s Flying Pigs. Anna was Claude’s 3-year-old great-niece who was treated at St. Jude during her fight with brain cancer.

Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.rtslwr.com for the Benedict family.

After graduating from Hempstead High School, David enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he trained and served as an airplane mechanic.  He was honorably discharged upon the expiration of his enlistment.  David was determined to become a commercial airline pilot.  He married the love of his life, Caroline Ann Christensen, in 1959.  They lived in Brooklyn, New York, started a family, and at one point David worked three jobs simultaneously in pursuit of his dream of becoming a pilot.  David’s hard work paid off when he was hired as a commercial airline pilot for Northeast Airlines.   In 1972, Northeast Airlines merged with Delta Airlines, which caused the family to relocate to Hollis, New Hampshire. David remained employed with Delta until his retirement in August of 1993.

After David retired, he and Caroline became snowbirds, spending winters at their home at the Spruce Creek Fly-In Community in Port Orange, Florida.  For many years after his retirement, David enjoyed flying his Cessna 195 out of the Nashua and Spruce Creek airports.  He was a member of the QB Pilots Group and always enjoyed breakfast outings with his fellow aviators and friends in New Hampshire and Florida.

David was a member of St. Luke's Anglican Church in Amherst, NH.

In addition to his parents, David was predeceased by his wife Caroline, and his brother, Douglas Newkirk.

Members of David’s family include a son, David D. Newkirk, Jr. and his significant other Akiyo Kodera of Brunswick, ME; daughter and son in-law, Pamela and Steven Patterson of Merrimack, NH; granddaughter, Anastasia Newkirk and her significant other Jayme Bellofatto, Jr. of Milford, MA; Zachary Newkirk of Walpole, MA; great granddaughter Melina Georgia Bellofatto; brother Daniel Newkirk of Charlotte, NC; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

Please join David’s friends and family to celebrate his life and share stories at LaBelle Winery in Amherst, New Hampshire on Thursday, November 30 at 12:30 p.m.

For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Brookhaven Hospice, 2 Bedford Farms Drive, Bedford, NH 03110

~ IN MEMORY ~

NWA Capt. Dino Oliva

MARCH 10, 1933 ~ OCTOBER 31, 2023

From the RNPA/Retired Northwest Pilots group….the passing of a great friend and colleague….

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It is always especially difficult when one of our NWA pilot leaders dies.

Perhaps especially difficult when that leader served our ranks long after

any expectations of a reasonable time. Such was the case with Dino Oliva.

Captain Dino Oliva, age 90, died at home on October 31st after a month of

medical rehabilitation.

Dino was hired by NWA on March 13, 1959. He served the NWA pilots for years

by holding ALPA LEC offices. After retirement he served RNPA (Retired NWA

Pilots Assn.) as Treasurer during an era when dues collection and recording

was a major endeavor. Until his health started to fail, Dino was a Vice President of RNPA.

Dino and his wife Karen reside in Sarasota, Florida.

There will soon be a designated pilot obituary posted on the RNPA website.

Standby for more details.

With profound respect,

Bill Day

Duane was born on June 19, 1941 to parents Glen and Martha (Stewart) Edelman.  Duane lost his mother as an infant and was lovingly raised by step-mother Ella (Stewart) Edelman.   Duane grew up in Clintonville, WI and graduated from Clintonville High School in 1959.  After graduation, Duane joined the Air Force . The pinnacle of his Air Force career was becoming a crew chief for the U.S.A.F. Through this work he helped develop standards for airline operations in foreign airspace.  Other career accomplishments included flying six models of airline transport planes.  He held two director positions with the airlines and worked to develop the electronic flight bag.  Duane was also involved with several NASA projects and believed in the advancement of technology for the airlines and the aviation industry.  In 2022, he was inducted into the Minnesota Aviation Hall of Fame.

Duane loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.  He and Fran started an annual tradition of a week-long cabin vacation with the entire family.  While he tended the fire, he imparted his vast knowledge with his kids and grandkids.  He had the ability to make every person he met feel special and inspired.
