___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Contributor contact info is generally removed before posting (unless requested otherwise).

John Gerald Unverzagt obituary

Captain John G. Unverzagt, 83, recently of Stone Mountain, arrived in his eternal home on Sunday, November 12, 2023. A celebration of his life will be held at the Church of the Apostles, 3585 Northside Parkway, Atlanta, 30327, on December the 15th at 2pm.

Born in New Orleans into a family with deep roots in southern Louisiana, he attended Catholic schools there and received his AB degree in Political Science from Tulane University in 1961. He was a proud member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity while in college and maintained a strong relationship to his fraternity brothers and the Tulane chapter throughout his life. In the position of District Grand Master, he was instrumental in helping to build brotherhood and excellence in the chapters under his direction.

Captain Unverzagt was a pilot for over 50 years achieving his childhood ambition. He began flying in the Air Force during the early years of the Vietnam War. He remained active in the Air Force reserves and in the Strategic Air Command protecting the US during the waning days of the Cold War. After serving in the Air Force, he began his 35 year career with Delta Airlines, achieving rank of Captain at an early age. He retired from Delta at the mandatory retirement age of 60 while undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Surviving the cancer, he was a proud member of the breast cancer survivor community. Not yet ready to be land bound, he took to the skies again, flying another 10 years for NetJets.

Always dedicated to a life of service, his love for the Lord inspired him live serving others. He gave many constant hours

to his fraternity and to both Delta and NetJets creating drug and alcohol addiction programs that saved lives and brought many to Christ. For over 10 years he was an on-line missionary with Global Media Outreach working every day answering spiritual questions and welcoming others into God’s family. Additionally he served as a Disabled American Veterans (DAV) volunteer, finding great satisfaction in that since he, himself, was disabled with Parkinson’s Disease due to his time in Vietnam. While he was still able, he faithfully served each week at Leading the Way, happy that through that he was contributing to the Lord’s work.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Marie Unverzagt; his sister Mitzi Treme; and sons Michael, John, and David Unverzagt. Surviving are his wife Kathy Unverzagt; brother Warren Devalier (wife Yumiko) of Tokyo, Japan; son Mark Unverzagt (wife Laura Fashing) of Albuquerque, NM; daughter Virginia O’Meara (husband Andy) of Charlestown, WV; son Steven Unverzagt of Nashville, TN; stepdaughters Ashley Buero of Smyrna and Karyn Chester (husband Allan) of Waverly, GA; grandchildren Lauren Moser, Jordan Unverzagt, John Graham Unverzagt, Kathryn Unverzagt, Ryan O’Meara, Cody O’Meara, Kylie Chacon, Haley O’Meara, Rhett Fordham, Blake Chester, Everett Buero, and Malone Buero; great grandchildren Nora Moser, Aly O’Meara, and Camryn Chacon.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to Leading the Way 1570 Northside Drive, NW, Bldg 100, Atlanta 30318.
