Gladys Stockhausen Anderson, wife of NWA Capt. Andy Anderson

April 7, 1933 ~ July 3, 2022

 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Captain Norman ‘Andy’ Anderson, age 91, died on September 20, 2024, from the effects of Parkinson’s and associated infections. He was born to Anthony and Miriam Miles Anderson at Lawrence Park, PA on August 21, 1933. Andy was the youngest of 3 sons, his older brothers were Tony and Harold.

Andy’s father, Anthony Anderson, had retired from the US Army. His service included duty as a drummer in the Army Band and service during WW 1. His post-retirement employment was with General Electric. Andy’s mother Miriam, was an elementary school teacher.

The family abode was in Lawrence Park, PA just east of Erie, PA. No doubt Andy could recall many brutal winters and yet in the summer months he often swam in Lake Erie. As a youngster, each summer Andy could be found on the public ball fields playing baseball with his pals. While in high school Andy distinguished himself as an athlete. He played the position of end on the football team. He most distinguished himself as a star basketball player, earning himself a full basketball scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh.

There was another award, this one lasted a lifetime. As high school students Norman Anderson and Gladys Stockhausen met while serving on a joint planning committee with another high school. Together they organized a “Two High School Joint Dance.” They started dating a month later, fell in love, and so began their wonderful love story that witnessed 5 years of dating launch 67 years of marriage.

His collegiate years at the University of Pittsburgh were good for Andy. He spent 2-1/2 years studying petroleum engineering. He also fulfilled his scholarship by playing center and forward on the university basketball team. His best laid plans to become a petroleum engineer were about to be interrupted, not unusual for future airline pilots of this era.

After being sweet talked into enlisting in the Navy as an Aviation Cadet (NAVCAD), Andy began flight training at NAS Pensacola. This was to become a life changing event for both Andy and Gladys. Andy’s primary flight training was in the USN SNJ-5 (known to many as the North American T-6), followed by multi-engine and advanced training in the SNB-5 (known also as the Beechcraft BE-18 or Secret Navy Bomber). Andy was commissioned an USN Ensign and awarded his Navy Wings of Gold on March 1, 1955.  Well done, Mr. Anderson.

Aviation Cadets were not permitted to be married, but almost immediately after graduation, Ensign Norman Anderson and Gladys Stockhausen were bonded in marriage. Now a couple, their first duty assignment was to NAS Whidbey in Washington State. They both fell in love with the Pacific Northwest. Andy flew a variety of aircraft, serving with several squadrons. His first post training aircraft was the Lockheed P2V-2 patrol aircraft. During his Navy service Andy also flew a variety of transport aircraft including the C-121G Super Connie, the C-130, and C-54.  His last Navy assignment was to Air Transport Squadron Seven at NAS Moffett Field, CA.

Perhaps Andy’s military air transport experience made him a natural for airline flying. He applied to Northwest Airlines and was hired on Oct. 30, 1958. During their first few years of airline employment Andy and Gladys moved around a bit until their work situation stabilized. When Andy finally could hold a copilot position at the Seattle base, the couple settled in Bellevue, WA. In 1971 they built their dream home in Bellevue, where they lived for the rest of their lives.

Andy began his airline career at NWA as a Douglas DC-4 copilot. In time he moved up the seniority ladder and flew as copilot on the DC-6 and DC-7. As the jet era arrived at NWA, Andy began the seniority ritual on the Boeing 707/320 series, in time upgrading to captain. In the mid-1970s the DC-10 arrived and presented a pleasantly different kind of domestic flying. The remainder of Andy’s NWA career was flown on the ‘Classic’ Boeing 747. He was a natural for this airplane and a favorite captain for many crew members.

Life for Andy was not solely about aviation. He and Gladys were family people, with four lovely children: Laurie, Ken, Brad (deceased), and Lianne.  The family worshipped at St. Andrews’s Lutheran Church their base for a strong spiritual life and bountiful friends. In addition to his many volunteer tasks at St. Andrews church, Andy served as President of the Board of Youth Chaplaincy program in the Seattle area. .

The family enjoyed outdoor life, and the Pacific Northwest provided ample opportunity for family camping.  And least we forget, Andy was an accomplished bridge card player.

On August 21, 1993, Andy felt the heavy hand of the FAA age 60 mandatory retirement and he parked his worn flight bag at home for the last time. This did not deprive Andy of recreational flying. He and Gladys had a shared ownership in a Lake Amphibian along with a couple other retired pilots. That meant acquiring yet one more FAA pilot rating

Retirement provided ever more opportunities for camping in their 5th wheel RV in the western US mountain states with family and friends. Before and after Andy’s retirement, the couple also traveled extensively around the world. They had a special affection for river cruises. By sharing these adventures, the couple drew ever closer together.

For nine years Andy and Gladys owned a recreation home in Idaho Springs, CO, where they spent time with grandchildren, and great grandchildren. They had many fond memories of holidays spent there, always with lots of snow.

There is little doubt that Norman R. Anderson lived a full and satisfying life. Late in life he suffered the sting of Parkinson’s disease. He was aware of how hard this ailment has hit the NWA pilot ranks. In response to a perceived need, Andy’s last request was to donate his body to science for research on Parkinson’s.

Andy is proceeded in death by his wife Gladys and their son Bradley. He is survived by his daughters Laurie and Lianne, his son Kenneth and eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial to be held at St Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Bellevue, WA, November 9, 2024, at 1 PM. The service will also be livestreamed – link to be provided soon.

This fine aviator was a man with a personality that would gently fill a room. He defined the words kind and thoughtful. His loss touches the hearts of many.

James Houdek Obituary

James Houdek, age 85, of Spring Valley, Wisconsin, passed away at his home, surrounded by family, on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.  Amazingly, September 18th is the Feast Day for the patron saint of aviators and pilots, Saint Joseph of Cupertino.

Visitation for Jim will be on Sunday, September 22, 2024, from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spring Valley and one hour prior to the service on Monday.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 23, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Spring Valley.

James Dean Houdek was born December 19, 1938, to James C. and Marie ‘Mae’ Sedlak Houdek in Crete, Nebraska.  He grew up farming with his family in rural southeast Nebraska.  During his senior year he moved to Columbus, Nebraska. He graduated from Columbus High School with the Class of 1956.  After high school he continued his education at the University of Omaha where he was a member of the Air Force ROTC and received a bachelor’s degree in accounting.

On February 2, 1963, he married Edith ‘Dede’ Coughenour, his college sweetheart, in Omaha, Nebraska.  After he graduated, Jim served in the U.S. Air Force from 1964 until 1969.  He flew the KC-135 Tanker during the Vietnam War.  By the end of his tour of duty, he and Dede had four children. He then was hired as a commercial pilot by Northwest Airlines and moved with his family to Minneapolis. Within a year the airline industry began laying off pilots, and Jim along with many other newly hired pilots lost his job.  He convinced Northwest to hire him back as an accountant, and he worked in the corporate offices for 8 years. In 1980 Jim very happily returned to flying, and he, Dede, and their now 8 children made Spring Valley their home.  The family became enthusiastic and involved members of the community.  Jim retired from Northwest on his 60th birthday in 1998.

After 45 years of marriage, he lost his wife Dede on November 6, 2008.

Jim later met Bonnie Baker, and they were married on November 27, 2010. They divided their time between their Florida and Wisconsin homes. Jim and Bonnie enjoyed traveling, visiting family, going on cruises, and working in their garden.

Jim was known for his selfless generosity throughout his life.  He was enthusiastically involved in his community whether it was rebuilding a church, being President of the Village Board, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, being a member of the Lion’s Club, the Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion, or helping with the many projects within his own family and the Village.  He was honored to be Grand Marshall of the 2023 Dam Days parade.

Some of Jim’s favorite things to do were attending his kids’ and grandkids’ activities, marching in the famous and talented El Paso Marching band, gardening, entertaining family and friends, and playing tennis. Jim was an avid tennis player and found tennis partners worldwide wherever he flew.  One of his proudest accomplishments was starting the annual Northwest Airlines tennis tournament. He ran this tournament for many years. It is now the Delta Airlines Tennis tournament, and he is recognized as the founding father.

He was preceded in death by his parents Jim and Mae Houdek; wife Dede; siblings Arnold Houdek and Aldeane Horning; father-in-law and mother-in-law Kenneth and Marian Coughenour; and sister-in-law Ann Coughenour.

Jim is survived by his wife Bonnie, his sister Jeanne (Gerald) Lauenroth, his children: Elizabeth (Gregg) Deutsch, James ‘Chip’ (Jaime) Houdek, Catherine (Royce) Keehr, John (Laurie) Houdek, Laura (Scott) Kish, Karen (Bill) Fesenmaier, Debra (Craig) Jilek, and Cynthia (Shawn) Harrison. He is also survived by stepchildren Scott Bullard and Jackie (Glenn) Graham and 25 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren and many, many nieces and nephews,

Visitation is Sunday, September 22, 2024, from 5:30p.m. to 8:00p.m. and Monday, September 23, 2024, from 10:00a.m. to 11:00a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Spring Valley.  A mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, September 23, 2024, at 11a.m.  Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Spring Valley.

Obituary Robert Victor Ziminsky…………….

Robert “Bob” Victor Ziminsky, 86, of Mason, NH a retired Delta Air Lines and acrobatic Pilot, peacefully departed on his final flight September 11, 2024.

Captain Ziminsky, New England based aerial acrobat, pilot for Northeast and Delta Air Lines, was born in Arlington, Massachusetts on April 9, 1938 to Vincent and Elsie (Lantz) Ziminsky.  He was raised in Arlington, MA with his twin brother William and older brother Philip Ziminsky. After he graduated from Arlington High School, 1956 he proudly served in the US Army and Navy. While in the Navy he served on a carrier as an air crew member, taking every opportunity to participate in flying missions.  During this service time he married Nancy P. Kenna and became the proud father of Laura and Geoffrey who was born after his discharge while attending UMA in Amherst, MA. He completed private flight instruction at La Fleur Airport in Northhampton through the university’s flying club. While attending classes Bob worked hard to pay for his lessons, tarring roads in the summer, selling Fuller brush products door to door and working as a bartender. Two hundred hours of flying time, the commercial and instructor’s ratings had to be paid for before Bob could begin combining income with increasing experience.

After Bob left the University of Massachusetts, a brief stint as a crop buster helped develop his skills flying close to the ground. He had already discovered the challenge and fun of aerobatics.

In 1964, Bob and a partner bought a small flying club at Hanscom Field, Bedford, MA. The club, Tech Aeroservice, Inc. offered almost two dozen planes for rental and ran a large flight school and charter service.

For three years Bob put his energies into flight instruction and building the flight school. Then in 1967, he was accepted for airline training. Hired by Northeast Airlines, he became a qualified DC-9 pilot and 727 flight engineer with more than 8,000 hours of flying time in his log. Northeast later merged with Delta in 1971. During which time until his retirement as Captain in 1998, Bob was based out of Boston, New York, Atlanta, and Cincinnati.

After moving his growing family to Groton, MA, Bob wanted to establish a dairy herd of Jersey cows. During this time Bob’s love of aerobatic flying grew and he started looking for a specialized aircraft that would be able to perform more demanding aerobatic maneuvers and would permit him to enter in national and international competition. Finally in 1967 he located a Chipmunk already certified in this country buying it for $8,000. He later went on to modify the airplane for better control during low-speed rolls and in knife edge flight. In the spring and summer of 1969 after completing modifications to his Chipmunk, Bob participated in numerous regional contests and that fall entered the nationals in Texas. From 1971-1975, Bob flew “New England” air shows in the United States and Canada. Bob’s highlight during performing was to cut a ribbon stretched between two poles 50 feet above the ground while flying upside down. One time he came down prematurely with the windshield and the side of his plane covered with oil, the result of an oil leak. Though he said he was somewhat blinded by the oil on his windshield, he got down safely. During this time Bob made sure the Chipmunk was well maintained for safety and kept physically alert by running two miles a day and often flying his Chipmunk upside down just to accustom his body to the negative G imposed by the inverted position. He held permanent authorization through the cooperation of the FAA and the Massachusetts Aeronautics Commission to practice over the Groton airport, a privately owned grass strip. In 1975 Bob made the decision to sell his beloved Chipmunk prior to the birth of Robert T. knowing full well the risks involved with continued flying aerobatic air shows.

Divorced in spring 1974, Bob later met Amy Hancock Ziminsky, after her father David C. Hancock, Delta Airlines Captain jokingly shared her picture stating here’s “my old maid school teacher” in the cockpit while flying at 34,00 feet. After a whirlwind courtship they tied the knot in December, 1974. Bob had built his dream home in Mason, NH on a beautiful 20-acre lot, a perfect new setting for his cows from Groton. Two children Robert T. Ziminsky and Tanya E. Ziminsky were born 1976 and 1981 respectively. Bob supported Amy’s dream to begin a daycare business in 1977 while nurturing their own children at home. The business later became the first private preschool-kindergarten, “Mason Country Day School” for children 3-6 years. The school served 18 students during the last years prior to its closing in 1988 during which time Amy earned her master’s degree in education from Antioch University and was hired to teach first grade at the Mason Elementary School.

Bob was a true self-made man who had many diverse skills. He enjoyed traveling as a tourist with his family taking them to Africa, Egypt, northern Finland, many European countries, Labrador, Rankin Island, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, western Canada and Galapagos islands; also, many places of interest in the USA. He accomplished all this when not gardening, bee keeping, farming, fishing, skiing, hunting, mowing the fields around his home, snowplowing and woodworking. He spent many hours maintaining tractors, the automobiles and airplanes, when not flying inverted, parachuting at the Pepperell, MA airport or taking cross country trips in his Cessna 180. As a multi certified flight instructor, he was helpful to many private pilots giving impromptu instruction and check rides for their licensing renewal.  He enjoyed flying his Cessna 180 to many fly-ins until the age of 84 and was a member of the Octogenarian flying club, Barnstormers as well as being a Justice of the Peace. Bob loved his family, the home he built including the “Zim” airport grass strip and the people of Mason, NH.

Surviving family members include wife Amy, daughter Tanya E. Ziminsky, a son Robert T. Ziminsky and partner Diana Carpinone, a son Geoffrey Ziminsky, a daughter Laura L. Miller and her spouse Jonathan B. Miller; and grandchildren Dominique Dalanni, Garrison Dalanni, James C. Ziminsky, Charles A. Ziminsky, Josiah Ziminsky, Jaiden Ziminsky, and Jarret Ziminsky.  Captain Ziminsky also is survived by his twin brother William Ziminsky, sister-in-law Maria Ziminsky, two great grandchildren, along with nieces, nephews and good friends.

In addition to his parents, Bob was also predeceased by his dear older brother Philip Ziminsky and sister-in-law Joyce Ziminsky, dear Aunt Lois Ewart and cousin Alice Freeman.

A family celebration of Bob’s life will be held at his cherished Mason home date to be determined. Per request there will be no services. Suggested if donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
