Word has been received with the passing of retired Delta pilot Captain William Fred Brindell, age 81.  Captain Brindell joined Delta Air Lines

 10-03-1966 and retired in 1996, based 030/ATL.  He is survived by his wife Loretta, their children and grandchildren.

~ Carol for the PCN      Obituary............................   William F. Brindell, 81, passed away at his home in Huntley, surrounded by his family on January 11, 2018. He was born June 26, 1936 the son of Charles and Marjorie Brindell. He graduated from San Diego University. He served 8 ½ years in the United States Marine Corp as a fighter pilot. On February 14, 1960 he married Lorretta Tofteland. Bill retired as a Captain with Delta Airlines after 30 years. He enjoyed his retirement with family, grandkids and friends in Sun City, Huntley, and Florida. He was actively involved in his Church, Sun City Marines and three bands where he continued to play the saxophone. Bill is survived by his wife and high school sweet heart, Loretta, his three daughters, Leslie (Bret), Bonnie (Mark), Michelle (Jeff) and by his 8 grandchildren, Melissa (Chris), Alexandria, Austin, Brandon, Hunter, Dustin, Michael, Katherine and by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Richard Brindell. The family will greet friends on Saturday, January 20, 2018 from 10-11am at Shepherd of the Prairie Lutheran Church, 10805 Main Street, Huntley, where there will be a Memorial service celebrating Bill’s life at 11:00am. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Shepherd of the Prairie Lutheran Church building fund, to help with the expansion of their new Church building. News has reached our group with the passing of retired Delta pilot Captain Carl Paul McCallum Sr., age 80. Captain McCallum joined Delta Air Lines 08-15-1969 and retired with Delta in 1997, based 030/ATL.  He is survived by his wife Marilyn, their children and grandchildren, plus many dear friends and colleagues.

Obituary — Carl McCallum, USNA Class of 1960

McCALLUM, Carl P.

Carl P. McCallum of Marietta, GA passed away peacefully on January 5, 2018. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on May 9, 1937. Carl grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, and graduated from Mariemont High School. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy, class of 1960. Carl served in the Navy from 1960 to 1968. He was first stationed at Patuxent River, MD and flew the first generation P3 Lockheed Orion.

Later in his military career, he flew for the Department of Defense as a test pilot for Lockheed in Palmdale, California. Carl served as President of the United States Naval Academy Alumni Association, Atlanta Chapter, and was a Trustee at the United States Naval Academy. Carl began his 30-year career as a pilot with Delta Airlines in 1968, retiring as Captain in 1997.  Carl was an active member of his church and served as an Elder for many years at John Knox Presbyterian Church in Marietta, GA. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Marilyn (Bach) McCallum; his sons Cary McCallum (Susan), Christopher McCallum (Elizabeth) and Carl (Chip)  McCallum, Jr.; granddaughters Kaitlyn, Kelsey, Erin, Kelly, Parker, Macy, Julia; and great granddaughter Camryn. He was preceded in death by his parents Douglas and Verna (McKeeth) McCallum and son Kevin McCallum.
Visitation is at John Knox Presbyterian Church on Saturday, January 20th at 10:00am and funeral services at 11:00am.

News with the passing of Delta Pioneer member retired Western/Delta agent Richard ‘Dick’ Heath Mitchell has reached us.  Dick was 81 years of age at time of passing.  Dick joined Western Air Lines in May 1964 and retired with Delta Air Lines in June 2001, based LAX as Line Ops Mgr., Dept. 062.  He is survived by his wife Carol.  Please see obituary information below.

Dick Mitchell passed away Tuesday, January 9th, 2018. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he grew up in Watertown with his parents and older siblings;  sister, Lucille and brother, Paul. After graduation he enlisted in the Army and served in Boussac, France where he became a train engineer at the supply depot. Upon completing his service, he  chose to work for the airlines. He joined Pan Am and worked on the ramp, then decided to move to a location with warm winters. So, he and Bill Ward packed all their belongings in his car and drove to California. Finding a job was not easy; so he applied for the least desirable job...scheduling. Thus began his career with Western Air Lines and its amazing family. During that time he married; bought a home and settled in Hermosa Beach. He was single when Western was near bankruptcy; so he made plans to settle in Costa Rica. When Delta bought Western and created his Line Operations Manager position, he remained until his retirement in 2001. He met and married Carol in March of 1991 at the Inn of the Seventh Ray. Her daughters Katherine and Michele were instantly a major part of his life. With a honeymoon in Paris, they began their travels around the world. His organizational skills made every trip pure pleasure. Dick considered it an honor to be invited to the Silver Chiefs and Wallybirds reunions each year.  The calendar was planned around those events. Time spent with all the people from work filled his heart with joy. Alzheimer’s, diagnosed in 2007, progressed slowly until September of 2017 when he could no longer stand, walk or feed himself. The “Promises Kept” Board and Care home provided  loving care. Carol & Katherine were with him in his final moments.  A spectacular rainbow appeared as he left the home.

Dick is survived by his wife, Carol, and daughters Katherine Curto and Michele Edwards; his nephew Lance Beloungie (Nancy) Erica Noyes and Michele Marabella, nieces Luanne (Jack) Monahan, Erin and Johnny; and Laurel, Kelly and Kristen Everett and by many dear friends who will miss him greatly. 

The memorial service will be held at Bel Air Presbyterian Church; 16221 Mulholland Drive; Los Angeles, CA 90049 at 10:30 am, Saturday, February 3, 2018 followed by a reception in the Discipleship Center.

WA/DL Capt. Martin ‘Marty’ Tynan

Born in El Paso, Texas, the eldest son of Betty C. Tynan and Martin F. Tynan, Sr. Soon after his birth, Marty’s Mother returned to San Luis Potosi, Mexico where his Father was a Manager for Mines for America Smelting and Refining Company.

Marty’s early education was Home Schooling until the age of twelve when he was sent to New York and Pelham School.

Marty attended and graduated high school at the St. Edwards Military Academy in Texas. He spent his freshman year of college at the University of Arizona. After one year of college, he then enlisted into the Army and spent two years with 21^st Infantry Division as a forward observer for a heavy mortar outfit fighting in the Korean War.

Upon returning to El Paso after the war, Marty enrolled at Texas Western (UTEP) and completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. During this time he worked for American Airlines as a Fleet and Cabin Service Agent during days and attended school during the nights. Three months prior to his graduation he met his future wife to be, an American Airlines Stewardess named Mary Sue Anderson. After a short courtship they married in June of 1963. Marty moved to Los Angeles and continued working for American until August 1963 when he became a High School teacher and Junior Varsity baseball coach at South Torrance High School.

The airlines were not hiring at this time, but he continued to fly earning his Commercial and Instrument Tickets.

Finally in 1966, Marty applied to Western Airlines and was invited to join them for the Lockheed Electra Class commencing on May 16, 1966. Two years’ probation for all new hires and finally the third year meant flying a regular schedule and continued to move up to other aircraft.

Marty became interested with union and contract negotiating and he was elected co-pilot representative for council 16 in LAX.

While greeting a senior pilot on his last flight, Marty was struck by the fact that there was no retirement organization in place for retirees. Knowing that in a period of 25 years or so he would be retiring too, he went to the MEC Chairman and asked if he could gather the retired pilots together to see if there was any interest, and there was a resounding yes. Hence, the Silver Chiefs of Western Airlines was formed, and continues to this day.

Marty continued with the Union work and was elected MEC Chairman in 1975, the first co-pilot to receive this honor. Doing union work and continuing to upgrade to new aircraft and finally becoming a Captain, every pilot’s dream. Marty left office in 1980 prior to the Western-Delta merger and continued to fly his trips and loving every moment of flying the line.

Never to be idle for very long, he became involved with his community Little League, first as a manager and then President of the league.

Continued his support of the Silver Chiefs and playing golf at the Palos Verdes Golf Club finally relaxing and enjoying life.

Marty and Mary Sue moved to Palm Desert, CA after living 43 years in Palos Verdes Estates.

He leaves his wife, Mary Sue of 54 years, a daughter Kristin of Escondido, and son Thomas of Palm Desert, a sister Mary Tynan Willis of Dallas Texas. He was pre-deceased by his brother Michael.

Word has reached us with the passing of Delta Golden Wings member retired Delta pilot Captain Gerald Everard Carr Jr., age 89.  Captain Carr joined Delta Air Lines 03-05-1956 and retired with Delta in 1988, based Atlanta.  Widowed in July of 2015, Captain Carr is survived by his children plus grand- and great grandchildren.  Services for Captain Carr are planned for this Saturday January 6th at 1:00PM, at

Obituary.................... Gerald Everard Carr

Gerald E. Carr, Jr., 89, of Peachtree City, passed away January 2, 2018. Captain Jerry was born on April 10, 1928 in Youngstown, Ohio, but spent most of his life in Peachtree City, Georgia. He served his country in World War II and Korea in the United States Marine Corp. He joined Delta Airlines in 1956 and retired in 1988. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Peachtree City, Georgia.

 

Jerry was predeceased by his beloved wife, Jackie Saunders Carr of Peachtree City, Georgia. He is survived by his sons, Michael J. (Kristie) Carr of Indian Rocks Beach, FL and Christopher B. (Kari) Carr of Cornelius, N.C.; daughter, Patricia (Ken) Bragg of Burleson, TX; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; sister, Rose Bertolini.

 

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Mowell Funeral Home, Peachtree City with Pastor Billy Rowe officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends from 12:00-1:00 PM prior to the service. Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to dementia research or a local hospice of your choice.
