Obituary :  Jim was born in 1950 in Pennsylvania. He graduated from Grove City College, also in western Pennsylvania. From early on, aviation was in his family’s blood and he answered the call, becoming a naval officer and pilot. It should be noted that he loved his country and was a life-long patriot, exemplifying the virtues of a true American. Jim then went on to a distinguished career as a commercial pilot, retiring as a captain with Delta Air Lines.

Jim was an avid outdoorsman and loved nothing better than hunting, fishing, and golfing with friends. He especially enjoyed working his property in central Alaska with his family. He took up golf late in life on the urgings of friends and cherished fellowship with them. Jim liked nothing better than to gather friends together in his backyard fire pit and pergola for barbecue and the fixings. Jim loved company and always sought to invite friends along on his boat for a cruise on Lake Wedowee in Alabama.

His personal traits were rich with superlatives. Generous to a fault, he shared what he had with anyone who had a need of any kind. Quiet, unassuming, and humble, with a subtle dry wit that he zinged on people by surprise.

Jim relished the close love and fellowship of believers at New Hope Baptist church, especially his small family group, who prayed for him continually right up until the end. He lived his life as an example of the salvation and forgiveness offered to all through his savior, Jesus Christ.

Stricken with pancreatic cancer in 2015, he fought heroically with a dogged and patient demeanor that drew the admiration and respect from all who witnessed his quiet struggle. His great heart finally gave out and he was welcomed into the heavenly realm by his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and those who arrived before him.

Jim is survived by his wife, Chris, two sons, (and an “almost” son) grandchildren, siblings, cousins, nephews, and nieces.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (II Timothy 4:7)

We welcome you to leave your condolences, thoughts, and memories of James on our Tribute Wall.

Obituary :

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of John Richard Erlandson (Eden Prairie, Minnesota), who passed away on September 5, 2022, at the age of 92, leaving to mourn family and friends.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 15th 2022 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and on Friday, September 16th 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 16th 2022 at 11:00 AM at the Normandale Lutheran Church (6100 Normandale Rd, Edina, MN 55436).

……………………………………

John Richard "Dick" Erlandson slipped the surly bonds of earth for the last time, touched the face of God, and came into the presence of his precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, September 5th, 2022. Dick was born February 4th, 1930 in Gary, Indiana, the second of five children where he learned from Arnold and Helen to put FAMILY first; he worked in his Dad's dairy in Miller, where he regularly drank the cream from the top of the milk bottles on any given day, then headed out to Lake Michigan to tear the beach up in his brother Charlie's custom dune buggy. He worked in the steel mills in high school; hitchhiked to Gustavus Adolphus College for two years, then attended CU Boulder graduating with a degree in Pharmacy.

The call to adventure came, and Dick joined the U.S. Navy as a carrier pilot, flying the AD Skyraider off the deck of the U.S.S. Hornet patrolling the Sea of Japan in the 1950s. He found himself based in Quonset Point, RI, where on leave one weekend, he met the beautiful Babsie Cartwright from Englewood, NJ, his wife of 66 years. His flying career brought him and Babs to Northwest Airlines where he flew the Red Tails for 31 years, flying the world over in DC-10s and the "Jumbo Jet" 747s.

In the midst of his flying career Dick worked at a friend's pharmacy during the NWA strike years, bought a couple of horse farms over two decades and was known as "Farmer Dick," as well as the Captain. He was devoted to his family and his church, Normandale Lutheran, where he began to grow his family spiritually in 1959, and never leaving until now, to finally see Jesus face to face. Dick was beloved by his wife, children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and literally everyone he ever met. He was involved in the following: airplane building, hang-gliding, scuba diving, hunting, smelting, golfing, sailing, snowmobiling, skiing, mountain climbing, choir singing, cooking, baking, gardening, carpentry, mechanic guy, secret shopper guy, apple-cider presser every fall, and all-around shenanigan instigator. With all of the above, getting a child involved, any child, was best.

Dick is survived by Barb "Babs" Erlandson, son Jim, daughter Lynn (Russ) Pauly, daughter Susan (Paul) Breckner, son John (Romy), twelve grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service 11 AM Friday (9/16) at Normandale Lutheran Church, 6100 Normandale Road, Edina. Visitation 5-7 PM Thursday at Huber Funeral Home, 16394 Glory Lane, Eden Prairie and one hour prior to service at CHURCH. Interment Lakewood Cemetery. The service will be live streamed at the church website https://normluth.org/livestream/

He flew T-28, H-3 and C-12 aircraft as well as being an Administrative Officer. After he retired from the Navy in 1991, Harry went to work as a pilot for American and Northwest which later merged with Delta Airlines. He definitely had "the need for speed".

Obituary : Margaret Patricia Mercedes Gillette was born on St. Patrick's Day, 1918, in Butte Montana, where her father, Leon, was a forest ranger.

The youngest of seven children, Margaret grew up riding, fishing, and working on the family farm. After high school, Margaret attended nursing school at Providence St. Patrick's Hospital. After achieving her R.N. degree, Margaret was recruited by Western Air Express, as one of the first "air hostesses" in the U.S. Based in Salt Lake City, Margaret's first aircraft was the Boeing 247. This ten-seater was the fastest and most modern passenger plane in the country. The B 247 was soon eclipsed by the DC 3. In addition to maintaining health and safety standards in the cabin, Margaret also served gourmet meals, and made up 14 berths for overnight flights. On a ground stop in Salt Lake City, Margaret met her future husband, Maury Keating. When the U.S. entered WW II, the couple married and moved to San Diego, where Maury flew for the Air Transport Command in and out of the Pacific. After the war ended, the Keatings moved to Anchorage, Alaska with their two young sons, and Maury was hired by Pacific Northern Airlines as chief pilot. The Keatings' adventure in Alaska was challenging. Two daughters were born there, Margaret spending many long cold nights waiting for Maury to return safely since they had no phone service. In 1951, Margaret and Maury were transferred to Seattle, settling on Mercer Island. A third son was born, and so most of Margaret's time was spent with her five lively children. She gardened, volunteered, and had many dear friends. After all the Keating children graduated from high school, another adventure awaited. Margaret and Maury moved to Honolulu so that Maury could finish his flying career as a DC 10 captain. After retirement the Keatings were able to travel extensively using their airline passes. When Maury died in 2008, Margaret moved to Aljoya on Mercer Island, where many friends lived, and she enjoyed making new friends as well. Margaret's unfailing optimism helped her through the challenging times that growing old can bring, and not a day went by without her saying "I am one lucky woman!" As she passed her 100th birthday, she constantly expressed her gratitude for everyone in her life: Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, her prayer group friends of fifty years, the wonderful caregivers from the Wellness Center, and countless friends. Margaret's cheery voice and positivity was an inspiration to everyone she met. Margaret's long and remarkable life was a shining example of a life well lived.

Margaret was preceded in death by Maury, and sons Dennis and Michael. She is survived by son Don Keating(Lori) daughters Janet Campbell(Duncan) and Margaret Ose (Gregg), grandchildren Matt, Kelsey, Michael, Jeff, Craig, Ryan, Amanda, Alex, Jordan and Patrick, and seventeen great grandchildren. There will be a family memorial service.

MAURICE KEATING

Born: March 15, 1917

Died: November 13, 2008

Captain Maurice KEATING passed away Thursday Nov 13th at the age of 91. Inspired by Charles Lindberg, Maury's interest in aviation began at an early age. He spent his youth in Salt Lake City, where his father was in the seed business. Maurice Keating Sr. often took his two young sons, Bill and Maury, to the airfield to watch airplanes land and take off. After graduating from East High in Salt Lake, Maury enrolled at USC in Los Angeles majoring in business. While at USC he was hired by United Airlines as a passenger agent and was sent to Salt Lake City, where he was able to complete his degree at the University of Utah, work for UAL, learn to fly, and ski when time permitted. It was on a ski date that he fell in love with Margaret Gillette, a registered nurse and one of the first stewardesses for Western Airlines. The couple married in 1941, and Maury became a flight instructor. When World War II began he was hired as a B-24 test pilot for Consolidated Vultee Aircraft. He delivered personnel and supplies to the Pacific Theater throughout the war. After World War II, Maury and Margaret began their family, and soon moved with their two small sons to Anchorage where Maury was captain and chief pilot for Pacific Northern Airlines. Two daughters were born there, and then the family moved to Mercer Island where their third son was born. PNA soon merged with Western Airlines, and it was with Western that Maury concluded his commercial career, flying the DC 10 between Seattle and Honolulu. Approaching 60, Maury decided to enter the Honolulu Marathon, beginning a phase of marathon running. He completed three marathons between the ages of 60-65. After reluctantly retiring from Western at the mandatory age of 60, Maury joined a group of pilots challenging the Age 60 rule. This ruling finally changed in 2007, allowing commercial airline pilots to fly until age 65. During this time Maury enjoyed flying as a corporate pilot for the construction firm Howard S. Wright. He further challenged himself by flying for the air ambulance service, Airlift Northwest, from which he retired at age 75. After retirement, the Keatings spent many wonderful years traveling between Mercer Island and Honolulu. Their biggest life challenge was losing their oldest son Dennis at the age of 46. In spite of this sadness, Maury enjoyed life to the fullest. He was a volunteer driver for senior services, a charter member of the Museum of Flight, played tennis with a group at the Seattle Tennis Center until the age of 85, and played golf until he was 89. He and Margaret had many wonderful friends and spent quality time with their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Maury counted his blessings every day, had a kind word for everyone he met, and never complained about his troubles. He never avoided a challenge, was generous to a fault, had high expectations for himself at all times, and adored and appreciated his best friend, Margaret. Maury's spirit will live on in the many people that he touched in his long lifetime. Maury was preceeded in death by his mother Grace, his father Maurice, his sister Barbara, and his eldest son, Dennis. He is survived by his loving wife Margaret, His brothers William (Billie) and Jack (Libby), his children Don (Lori), Janet Campbell (Duncan), Margie Ose (Gregg) and Michael, grandchildren, Matt, Jeff, Craig, Mike, Kelsey, Jordan, Ryan, Amanda, Alex, and Patrick, and great-grandchildren Sydney, Blake, Lauren, Ava, Will, Keaton, Coltan, Adam, and Luke, and many adoring nieces and nephews. We will all miss Maury's charm, fun-loving nature, courage and faith.

Obituary :  BUREN (ANTHONY), Essie Juanita

Essie Juanita Anthony Buren passed from this life to her heavenly home on September 2, 2022 with her sister, brother-in-law and niece at her side. She was born on November 23, 1946 in Memphis, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles David Anthony and Essie Hamner Anthony and her husband, Harold "Hal" Buren, who was a Delta Air Lines Captain. She is survived by her sister, Virginia (Ginger) Anthony Hines. Ginger was born almost 3 years after Juanita, but they were so close they were like twins. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Bill Hines, who was like a brother to both Juanita and Hal as well as by her niece, Dr. Chelly Dykes (Adam) and two great nieces (Madeline and Charlotte), two nephews and great-nephews, David Knight (Melissa- Luca) and Stephen Knight (Heidi-Miles). Also surviving are Mary Ann Favazza who was like a slightly older sister, special uncle and aunt Paul and Nellie Anthony, sister-in-law Carole Watson and too many cousins and dear friends to mention.

Juanita was a vibrant, loving sister, aunt, cousin, niece and friend. Her big, welcoming smile and gracious manner brought sunshine wherever she was. Her biggest concern was for other people, especially her family and friends. She loved her nieces and nephews dearly and was always available when they needed her. She is already truly missed.

Juanita graduated with honors from Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis). In her senior year, she was hired by Braniff with a planned start date after graduation. She loved their Pucci uniforms, colorful airplanes, interesting South American routes, and that they had a female CEO was a woman. Before graduation, a young college professor told her she needed to fly for Delta, so she let Braniff know she changed her mind and decided to fly for Delta instead. One week after college graduation she started "stewardess school" for Delta.

A highlight of her career was being hired by Sr. VP (later President) Hollis Harris for a special assignment. Her assignment allowed her to train and then fly (with Marlene Curtiss) the first L1011 back from Palmdale, CA with 50 board members and executives. The airplane broke speed records, so they didn't finish the meal service, but no one cared! Many years later Juanita flew the last L1011 on its final trip to the "boneyard." It was refitted to be used by Doctors Without Borders.

Juanita always said that before she began flying, she knew she was blessed with a wonderful family, but it wasn't until she started flying that she really knew how lucky she was to have been born in the USA.

Juanita was a member of the Georgia Bar Emeritus and a former member of the American Bar Association. She was also a member of Alpha Xi Delta, Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Alpha Theta, Delta Clipped Wings, DAR and Dunwoody United Methodist Church.

On Juanita's behalf, the family would like to thank Dr. Barry McCasland, Maxine Rodriguez, Maxine Hall, Althea Anderson and Bernice Sebalgu for their loving care.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM on Friday, September 16, 2022 at HM Patterson & Son, Arlington chapel. A Celebration of Life service will be at 2PM on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at Dunwoody United Methodist Church. A private graveside service will be held Sunday, September 18, 2022.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Salvation Army, United Methodist Children's Home, Dunwoody United Methodist Church, St. Joseph Mercy Foundation, or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.

AJC OBITUARIES: Harold Wayne Buren, retired Delta Air Lines pilot

Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The (GA) – published Thursday, February 20, 1997

FAA, you had to be one of the better flight instructors," said Chuck Knight, a Delta pilot and a longtime friend.

During the Vietnam War, he received the Distinguish Flying Cross.

As a 9-year-old in Hillsboro, Mo., Mr. Buren created designs for rocket ships. "He was always drawing," said his sister, Carole Watson of St. Louis.

His design of a seat that could withstand extreme gravitational forces was noticed by U.S. military researchers working on the fledgling space program. For this, Mr. Buren was honored in a Marine Corps ceremony and earned college scholarships. Word of his novel designs spread to Britain, where a government agency awarded the young American a "passport to the moon," his sister said.

Surviving in addition to his sister are his wife, Juanita Anthony Buren of Alpharetta; his mother, Bessie Judd Buren of Hillsboro; and another sister, Audrey Kempa of St. Louis.
