___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Contributor contact info is generally removed before posting (unless requested otherwise).

May 23, 2012

I have very sad news to report about Bill.  As you pilots say, he has "Flown West".  He died on May 5th, 2012 following open heart surgery.  He had many complications following the surgery and they proved to be overwhelming..  His family misses him terribly.  I know how much his flying career meant to him and how much he enjoyed his interactions with all of you.  He enjoyed reading "Contrails" which was filled with great information and news about fellow pilots.

I am sending a copy of his obituary and don't know how you handle the communication part.  My phone number is
239-489-0889 and my email is phyllisbrewer888@gmail.com.  A memorial service for Bill will be held on June 3rd at 3 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fort Myers, Florida.  The church address is 13411 Shire Lane   Fort Myers, Fl 33912.   For directions to the church call 239-561-2700 or his wife Phyllis at 239-489-0889

Thank you very much,
Phyllis Brewer

Captain William Douglas Brewer
May 5, 2012

William D. Brewer (Bill), 78, of Fort Myers, Florida died Saturday, May 5th, 2012 at the University of Miami Medical Center in Miami, Fl.
Bill was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on May 28, 1933 to William Lloyd Brewer, and Clara Bailes Brewer.  He attended Will Rogers High School and received a BA in Business Management from the University of Oklahoma.  Following college he joined the Air Force and served 7 years as a pilot in several inflight refueling squadrons, where he flew KC-97’s in the Strategic Air Command.
After the Air Force, Bill began a 32year career as a Commercial Airline Pilot. He truly loved flying and often would exclaim, “it sure beats working for a living”.  He began his career with Pacific Airlines and transitioned through several mergers, including Hughes Air West and Republic Airlines. He ultimately retired from Northwest Airlines as a DC-9 Captain in 1991. During his career he also proudly represented his fellow pilots on the Airline Pilot’s Association’s National Retirement and Insurance Committee, and was instrumental in preserving the retirement benefits of his fellow pilots through three mergers.
Following his retirement, Bill and his wife, Phyllis, enjoyed traveling between homes in Fort Myers, Fl and Incline Village, Nevada, and visiting family and friends in Northern California. Bill had a great sense of humor and was loved by many for his kind heart and optimistic spirit.  He never tired of a good joke and was always ready for a spirited discussion on most any subject.  One of his favorite sayings was “My job is to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable”.
Bill’s life was centered around enjoying family and friends. A lifetime traveler, he always enjoyed planning the next adventure with his wife, Phyllis.  They explored Europe, Asia, South America and much of the United States.   He especially enjoyed boating on SF Bay, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean and Lake Tahoe.  He loved the California Redwoods, the mountains, and the warm tropical breezes of SW Florida.
He was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fort Myers for over 25 years. He served in many capacities and was co-founder of the congregation’s Endowment Committee.
Bill is survived by his wife, Phyllis; daughter, Katherine Diane McNamara, her husband Scott McNamara, their children Christopher, Suzanne and David;  son Daniel Brewer,  his wife Karen and their children Gregory, Michael and Harrison; and his first wife, MaryAnn Peterson.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fort Myers Endowment Fund, Autism Speaks, or Planned Parenthood.
Memorial services in Fort Myers as well as California are being planned. Cremation is being arranged by Harvey Engelhardt Funeral Home and more information about Bill can be found at www.harvey-engelhardt.com
