Complete obituaries below.......
Burton was born in
Pioneer, Texas, to Burton Jacob Dupree and Lydia Anderson Dupree on May 24,
1932. He graduated from Denver City High
School. He rode an Indian, a James, and a Harley, passing that love on; all the
children rode for a time. Burton began a long-term love affair with flying,
soloing after three hours in a Piper Cub.
He completed a B.A.
in design. At Texas Tech, he majored in
architecture, landscape architecture, and design and served as Colonel of Cadets
in the R.O.T.C. his senior year. In 1956, he began ten years of active duty as
an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In Central America 1959-1962 he
supported the mapping mission of the 937th Engineers as part of the
Inter-American Geodetic Survey in both fixed-wing craft and helicopters, and in
1964-1965 flew as a pilot in Viet Nam, leaving active duty in 1966. He then
served for ten years in the 91st Division (Reserve) Aviation Section,
retiring as a major.
In
1966, he began a career with Pacific Airlines, merging into
Air West, later Hughes Airwest, merging into
Republic, then bought by Northwest, retiring from
Northwest Airlines in 1992. That love of
flying was passed on for two more generations.
Burton was widely
known for his cartoons, and he did them of almost everyone he met. He loved to
fish and to simply be in nature. The
children grew up going to parks and fishing.
He traveled in Vanagons for decades.
He volunteered, washing dishes at St. Anthony’s Dining Room and driving a
forklift at the Second Harvest Food Bank.
Every day, he was at Peet’s coffee shops with friends. He attended the
Humanist Community; a poetry group; a dinner group; and the Men’s Group at
Woodside Village Church.
Burton was preceded
in death by his parents, his sister Karen Ann Westbrook, and son John Marc
Dupree, who is survived by his wife Christine Jameson Dupree.
Burton is survived
by his wife Sabra; his children and their spouses James and Wanda Dupree, Walter
and Virginia Dupree Waik, David Jacob Dupree; and grandchildren Kimberly,
Jeffrey, Lydia, Robert, Megan, Erin, Abigail, Olivia, Marc, Elizabeth, Scott,
and Christian.
Our family wishes to
extend our deepest thanks to the staff of the Veterans Administration Community
Living Center, Building 360 at 795 Willow Road in Menlo Park, who provided the
best of professional loving care.
Memorials may be
sent to the art department at Willow Oaks School, 620 Willow Road, Menlo Park,
CA 94025.
