___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Contributor contact info is generally removed before posting (unless requested otherwise).

Andrew Balkus, 70: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Daily News of Newburyport, The (MA) - Monday, May 27, 2013

Andrew Balkus, 70

Newburyport, MA and Wapiti, WY — After a five-year battle with cancer, Andrew Balkus passed peaceably in his sleep with Sharon, his devoted wife of 22 years, at his side.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1943 and raised in Lynn, Mass., he graduated from Lynn English in 1961. A consummate optimist and lover of life, he always had a warm smile and big hug for all. His beginnings as a truck driver after high school grew into an international aviation career that spanned more than 30 years with Northwest Airlines. Retiring as a Wide Body DC-10 Captain, his adventuring continued on the SV "Its Good," with more than a decade of cruising the Caribbean Islands and the coast of South America with his wife. A deep devotion to family and friends allowed for many special times at home and abroad for his children and grandchildren. Andy is deeply loved and will be missed by his wife, Sharon; brother, William; sister, Judy; sons, Dan and Brad; Brad's wife, Kara; grandchildren, Madelyn and Andrew; and countless friends and family.

ARRANGEMENTS: A celebration of life ceremony will be held later this summer.  Memorial contributions may be made to Oriental Culture Institute, 85 Essex Street, Haverhill, MA 01831, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284, or another charity of your choice.
