___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Contributor contact info is generally removed before posting (unless requested otherwise).

Mrs. Ruth Sheppard Friedell, age 98, died on October 2, 2013. She was born on August 18, 1915, in Saluda, South Carolina to David Edward Sheppard and Belle Peurifoy Sheppard. Mrs. Friedell was the 9th of their ten children and spent her early childhood on the family farm in Saluda. After graduating from high school, Mrs. Friedell received training as a beautician and worked in a beauty shop in Camden. It was in Camden where she met her future husband, Earl Julius Friedell, who was an instructor for American and British Army military flying cadets during WWII. Shortly after their marriage in 1942, Mr. Friedell was hired as a pilot for Delta Airlines and was based in Atlanta. Mrs. Friedell owned and operated her own beauty shop in the Buckhead area of Atlanta until a job transfer with Delta took the Friedell's to Miami, Florida. After a few years in Miami, the Friedells returned to Georgia, living in College Park, GA. Mrs. Friedell was an active member and children's Sunday school teacher in their church, Good Shepard Lutheran. She was also a leader of her three children's Girl and Boy Scout Troops and the biggest cheerleader and supporter in any sport event, recital, or other activity that her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were involved in. Mrs. Friedell was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and sister. She was an excellent cook and nothing made her happier than to prepare a delicious holiday meal for her many family members and friends. She was known for her positive outlook on life, her infectious laugh, her "never give up" attitude, and her love of everything "pink", especially in her clothing. She loved to travel, and shared a keen interest in aviation with her husband that was passed on to her children. All three of her children, a granddaughter and grandson, and son-in-law worked in the aviation field for a time. Mr. and Mrs. Friedell were long time charter members of both Delta Pioneers and Delta Golden Wings Clubs. Upon Mr. Friedell's death in 2004, Mr. and Mrs. Friedell had been married for 62 years. Mrs. Friedell leaves behind a loving family that includes son Earl Julius Friedell, Jr. and his wife Mary Sue of Snellville, GA, Ann Friedell Leichtle and her husband Bob of Columbia, SC, Ronald Michael Friedell and his wife Angie of Columbia, SC; five grandchildren, Kathleen Friedell Pawson and her husband Jim of Buford, GA, Stephanie Leichtle DeFreese and her husband Michael of Columbia, SC, Peter Friedell and his wife Nola of Flowery Branch, GA, Alan Leichtle and his wife Samantha of Columbia, SC, and Zachary Friedell of Cairns, Australia; and nine great-grandchildren, Alex, Hailey, Abby, Payton, Taylor, Rich, Cole, Campbell and Cully. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Friedell was predeceased by her four sisters and five brothers. Although Mrs. Friedell had many special caregivers over the years, none have been more dedicated or a determined advocate for her than her daughter, Ann. Ann's unfaltering love and care of her mother is greatly appreciated by her brothers and the rest of the family. A funeral service will be held at 4:00 P.M., on Friday, October 4, 2013 at Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209, with Chaplain Vickie Powell officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 2:30 P.M., on Friday, October 4, 2013 at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209. Earl Julius Friedell, Sr. of Columbia died Thursday, November 11, 2004 at his residence. He was born on September 24, 1918 in Charleston, South Carolina to the late Otto Robert and Myrtle Gilmore Friedell. It was in Charleston where, at an early age, Earl became interested in airplanes, paving the road for him to eventually become an early pioneer in the field of aviation. As a young boy, Earl would ride his bicycle 10 miles from his home to the airport to watch the airplanes take off and land, and to talk to the pilots about flying. He would wash planes in exchange for airplane rides and eventually began taking flying lessons when he was only 15 years old. After graduating from high school in Charleston, Earl attended the College of Charleston and continued to pursue a career in aviation. At the beginning of World War II, he instructed military army flying cadets in Camden, SC, and was sworn into the Air Reserve. As a pilot and instructor, Earl had a reputation as being very serious and he expected the same dedication from his students. Perhaps his most famous student was Robert "Bob" Morgan, who went on to skipper the famous "Memphis Belle," the first B-17 to complete 25 successful missions over Europe during 1942-1943. In his autobiography, Bob Morgan not only attributes Earl with teaching him to fly, he went on to dedicate the book to Earl. Earl and Bob continued to be friends throughout their lives and until Bob's death this past summer. It was also while in Camden that Earl met his future wife of 62 years, Ruth Sheppard. Earl and Ruth married on March 14, 1942, in Columbia. In May of 1943, Earl took a job as a pilot with a small company in Atlanta, called Delta Air Lines. Delta had three airplanes and Earl was their 51st employee. He retired with Delta in 1976 after 33 years of employment and Earl and Ruth eventually moved back to Columbia. Earl leaves an aviation legacy with his son, Ron, who is a pilot for US Airways, and grandson, P.J., who is a pilot with Continental Express. Earl, Jr. worked in reservations sales for United Airlines for 11 years. His daughter, Ann, was a flight attendant for Eastern Airlines for 21 years and his granddaughter, Kathleen, is a flight attendant for Delta, and is married to a Delta pilot, Jim Pawson. Earl was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbia for many years. In addition to his wife, Ruth Sheppard, Earl is survived by son, Earl Julius Friedell, Jr. and his wife, Mary Sue of Snellville, GA; daughter, Ann F. Leichtle and her husband, Robert A. Leichtle of Columbia; son, Ronald Michael Friedell and his wife, Angie of Columbia; five grandchildren, Kathleen F. Pawson, Stephanie l. Laubacker, Peter J. Friedell, Robert A. Leichtle II, and Zachary M. Friedell; four great-grandchildren, Alexander James Pawson, Hailey Elizabeth Laubacker, Abigail Grace Pawson, and Payton Ann Laubacker; and one cousin, Betty W. Morgan, of Raleigh, NC. In addition to his parents, Earl was preceded in death by his brother, Otto Robert Friedell, Jr.
