___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Contributor contact info is generally removed before posting (unless requested otherwise).

Notification with the passing of Elizabeth ‘Betty’ ‘Mimi’ Mitchell Urquhart, age 92.  From what I can determine, as of April 1939, Betty’s husband Jim Urquhart worked for Chicago & Southern Airlines first as Dispatcher then Station Manager at the Springfield IL airport and was taking flying instructions with the Springfield Aviation Company flying school.  Jim transferred to Shreveport May 1941...possibly when C&S discontinued flying to the Springfield airport.  Jim and Betty were married in Arkansas 04-09-1943.  From what I can tell, sometime after the family moved to Lubbock TX, it appears Jim made a career change because by 1955 his occupation is listed as an agent for Great National Life Ins.  Betty and Jim had most recently resided in Louisiana.

Betty’s obituary:  The world became a lesser place on Jan. 27, 2014 with the passing of Elizabeth (Betty) Mitchell Urquhart at age 92. Born in Kentucky to J.S. and Ruth Mitchell on Feb. 23, 1921, and raised in Lexington, she graduated from the University of KY at the age of 20, taught English and by age 22 was the first woman from KY to fly as a stewardess for Chicago and Southern (later Delta) Airlines. There she met R. James (Jim) Urquhart, a handsome young airline pilot whom she married in 1943. They traveled extensively before settling in Lubbock, TX and eventually in Corpus Christi where she became a major force in the real estate business until her retirement in 1986. Since 2008 she and Jim spent much of their time in Prairieville in the home of their daughter and son-in-law where Jim passed in 2009. Her optimism, love and genuine interest in people brought light to all who had the privilege to know her. She is predeceased by her parents, her sister Martha Triplett and husband Austin, a son, Thomas Mitchell Urquhart, and her husband Roy James (Jim) Urquhart. "Mimi" is survived by her son James G. Urquhart and wife Lynette, daughter Elizabeth (Bette) U. Ragusa and husband Brigham, son Christopher L. Urquhart and stepdaughter Joann Wilson and husband Bill. She is also survived by grandchildren James F. Wilson and wife Holly, Steven A. Ragusa and wife Christine, Heather E. Ragusa, Mitchell A. Urquhart and wife Laura, Richard Kyle Urquhart and wife Sarah, Kevin Scooby, Susan Ellis and husband Steven, and 20 great grandchildren. Thanks go to the wonderful doctors and staff at St. Elizabeth Hospital, as well as the nurses and staff at St. Joseph's Hospice for all their efforts and care. There will be a private memorial service at the home of Steven and Christine Ragusa, 18504 Oak Grove Parkway, Prairieville, LA at 3:00 Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014. Please visit www.resthavenbatonrouge.com  to sign the online guestbook.
