EDWARD RUSSELL HOLLADAY, 84, of Atlanta, died peacefully on the evening of
Friday, January 31st. He was born in Nashville, TN, on October 14, 1929, son of
the late Elsie Holladay and T.D. Holladay. Russell attended Boys High where he
served as captain of the football team, and then on to Georgia Tech prior to
being called into military service. He completed Naval Flight Training in
Pensacola, Florida in 1952, and was later assigned to the VF44 Fighter Squadron.
He was a decorated Korean War veteran.
Russell joined Delta Air Lines in 1956, and enjoyed every minute of his
flying career until his retirement in 1989. Several years prior to his
retirement, he began flying L-1011's to Europe and was affectionately referred
to by family and friends as "Captain International Wide Body". When he was not
flying, he could usually be found on the Cherokee Country Club golf course
playing with his many friends in The Big Table.
He was a member of Northside United Methodist Church.
Russell was a humble and sweet man with a wonderful sense of humor. He
cherished his family and friends and will be missed a great deal by all who knew
and loved him.
Russell is survived by his wife of 62 years, Eva Reid Holladay, as well as
his children: Laurie Murphy, and her husband, Michael; Julie Wiedeman, and her
husband, Tom; and Russell Holladay, Jr. He is also survived by his
grandchildren, Bobby Webb, Thomas Wiedeman and his wife Kathryn, Kate Wiedeman,
and Olivia Holladay, as well as one great grandson, Tee Webb. He also leaves
behind his brother Dixon Holladay (Ginny), his sister, Anabel Cunningham, and
several nieces and nephews.
The memorial service will be held at Northside United Methodist Church at
3:00 on Tuesday, February 4th. The family will receive friends beginning at 2:00
in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in Russell's name to
Northside United Methodist Church, or the charity of your choice.
