WWII veteran, WAL Capt. Francis ‘Frank’ J. Flynn
October 3, 1920 ~ February 23, 2014
Word has been received with the passing of WWII veteran
retired WAL Captain Francis ‘Frank’ Joseph Flynn, age 93. Captain Flynn hired
on with Western Airlines 06-17-1946 and was based LAX at the time of his
retirement in 1980. A memorial mass will be
held on Tuesday, March 4th, at 10:00am ( 9:30 rosary ) followed by a luncheon in
the Hall at St. Steven's Roman Catholic Church in Chandler, AZ. http://content.saintstevensparish.org/

Obituary:
Frank Flynn passed away February 23rd of natural causes. He was
born October 3, 1920 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. His family moved to Waterloo, Iowa
where he grew up. He graduated in 1938 from Our Lady of Victory Academy High
School. He attended one year at Drake University before enlisting in the U.S.
Army Air Corps and was commissioned on Nov. 2, 1942. He served in WWII until May
18, 1946 as a Captain piloting for the Air Transport Command in both the
Pacific-Asiatic and Europe-Africa-Middle Eastern Theaters. Frank was then hired
by Western Airlines as a Captain. He took a furlough from 1948-1949 so he could
fly missions in the Berlin Airlift. He continued his career for Western
Airlines and retired in 1980 as a Captain on the DC-10.
Frank was married to his beloved first wife, Alice (Dunham) Flynn in 1948
until her death in 1984. They are survived by their four children (Pat, Mike,
Tracy and Tom), six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. They raised
their family in Salt Lake City, Utah and Corona del Mar, California.
Frank married Joyce (Hill) Flynn in 1986 and they were happily married for
27 years residing in Sun Lakes, Arizona. Joyce's children, Melissa and Eric, and
her 4 grandchildren were close to Frank.
Frank was also preceded in death by his brother John and two sisters, Agnes
and Mary.
Frank enjoyed travel, tennis, cars, and was a devout Roman Catholic.
A memorial mass will be held on Tuesday, March 4th, at 10:00am ( 9:30
rosary ) followed by a luncheon in the Hall at St. Steven's Roman Catholic
Church in Chandler, AZ.
