Word has been received with the passing
of retired NWA pilot Captain Robert George Buley, age 70. From what I can find,
following his military commitments and schooling, Captain Buley joined North
Central Airlines in 1976 and retired with Northwest Airlines in 2004. Captain
Buley had a very distinguished aviation career...please see below. Facebook
postings indicate Captain Buley died of stroke complications.

RTCA was saddened to hear of the death of Bob Buley, former Co-Chair of SC-147, Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System. He was described by his peers as the “guru” on collision avoidance system technology. His illustrious career in aviation was featured in RTCA’s Volunteer Spotlight in *February 2014. “The aviation world is mourning the loss of an industry pioneer,” stated RTCA President Margaret Jenny. “Bob truly contributed to significant safety improvements and the betterment of the aviation industry and will truly be missed by his friends and colleagues.”

Celebration of Bob’s life will be from 1 to 5 PM Sunday, May 17, at
Drugan’s Castle Mound Country Club in Holmen, WI. Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral
Homes and Crematory, Woodruff Chapel, La Crosse, WI, is assisting the
family.

During the last several years he has
been deeply involved in the management of all activities Northwest currently has
under way with what was formerly the Soviet Union, in
addition to a number of special initiatives with the Peoples Republic of China.
He is also very active in industry efforts pertaining to aircraft and
flight crew performance. He is currently a member of NASA's Space Transportation and Aeronautics Advisory Committee and NASA's Air Traffic Management
Research and Development Executive Steering Committee. In addition
he served six years as a member of the FAA's R E & D Advisory
Committee. Captain Buley also chaired the
Air Transport Association's (ATA) Flight Systems
Integration Committee, the ATA Human Factors Task Force, and is currently the
chairman of Special Committee 147 of the RTCA. This latter activity is
charged with developing a national standard for the Traffic Alert and Collision
Avoidance System, TCAS. He also served as chairman of the ATA's Satellite Navigation Task Force and was an active
participant in the FAA/Industry MLS Task Force.
Captain Buley was
deeply involved in the development of the first complete airline sponsored
abinitio pilot training program, a joint effort between NWA and the University of North Dakota's John D. Odegard School of Aerospace
Sciences (JDOSAS). He continues to be involved with the JDOSAS
in an advisory capacity and as a guest lecturer.
Other activities have included membership of
NASA's Aeronautical Research and
Technology Subcommittee, the Advanced Cockpit Technology Task Force and NASA's
Ad Hoc Advisory Committee on the High Speed Civil Transport. In July
of 1997 he was elected to serve as a Practitioner Trustee of the
Council on Aviation Accreditation. In 1992 Captain Buley was awarded the Aviation Week Laurels Award
for his work on TCAS. In 1995 he was presented with the
International Cooperation Award by the American Institute of
Aeronautics and Astronautics for his work with the former
Soviet Union on GPS/GLONASS. Captain Buley is the
1996 recipient of the Laura Tabor Barbour Award administered by the International Flight Safety Foundation. This award is
presented for individual leadership in civil and military flight safety efforts
and presented as a means of acknowledging his leadership in the field
of aviation human factors and collision avoidance system development.
He is also a recipient of the RTCA Achievement award for
his leadership of Special Committee 147.
Captain Buley is a
U.S. Navy veteran. After leaving the Navy he attended the University of Wisconsin and then began his
flying career. Prior to joining North Central
Airlines in 1976, he was experienced in virtually all aspects
of civil aviation including bush flying in Alaska, Part 135 charter, corporate
aviation, and commuter airlines. Captain Buley
has accumulated approximately 18,000 flying hours and currently holds Type
Ratings in the CV-580, DC-9, MD-80 and AIRBUS A-320.

Russia.

HOLMEN — Robert “Bob” G. Buley, 70, of Holmen died Tuesday, April 21, 2015, at Gundersen Health System, La Crosse. Celebration of life will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 17, at Drugan’s in Holmen. A complete obituary will follow. Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Homes and Crematory, Woodruff Chapel, La Crosse, is assisting the family.
