Daniel Webster Lawson, 81, of
Tuttle/Yukon passed away Friday, April 10, 2015. He was born in Oklahoma City on
October 18, 1933 to Frederick and Hazel Marie (McCurry) Lawson. Dan grew up in
Tuttle and attended schools there through high school. He then graduated from
Oklahoma State University where he was a member of the THETA CHI Fraternity. Dan
had a love of flying and enlisted in the Navy. He attended Naval Flight school
and graduated as a 2nd Lt. in the USMCR. He flew with VMF 323 squadron (Death
Rattlers). Dan’s love of flying took him to Western Airlines (Los Angeles). He
was hired April 25, 1963 and flew for Western until their merger with Delta
Airlines in 1987. He retired November 1, 1993. He was type rated in the B-707,
B-720, B-727, B-757, B-767, DC-10 and L-1011 and retired from Delta flying the
MD-11. He held memberships in the following organizations: Order of Daedalians,
Quite Birdman, California Elks and life memberships in the NRA, VFW and American
Legion. Prior to retiring Dan bought his first war bird, a T-28 and attended the
air shows at Oshkosh for about 10 years. He flew with a great group of pilots
who called themselves the COG’S (children of God). They had many memorable trips
together. When not flying his plane he helped restore the CAF Museum’s A-26
(which he flew) and a German ME-109. In 1998 Dan returned to Tuttle to care for
his aging father and continue his love of flying. He was a Certified Flight
Instructor and helped anyone who asked. With the purchase of two more planes and
lots of air shows he kept quite busy. We know Dan is flying up yonder in the
wild blue. Dan is survived by his wife Lois of the home, and grandson Daniel
Perry Lawson of Napa, CA. He is preceded in death by his father and mother, sons
Michael Perry Lawson and Myron Patrick Lawson of Napa, CA., and brother Michael
Lee Lawson.
