Mr. Donald Banks Collins Sr., 78, of Williamson, passed away May 14, 2015.
He was born in Forsyth, son of the late John Collins and Carolyn Tollison Collins. He graduated from Mary Persons High School, and then attended the Georgia Institute of Technology for two years before transferring to Emory University, where he received his bachelor's degree. Don then joined the United States Navy, completed flight training school, earned his wings, and flew P2V submarine hunters. He was honorably discharged as a lieutenant commander. In 1966, he began a 30-year career as a pilot with Delta Airlines.
He was extremely active in the Pike County community, where he has lived since 1978. He was elected to the Board of Commissioners for Pike County, District 4, was a long-time member of the Kiwanis Club where he coordinated the annual Tour de Pike bike ride and the bi-monthly Red Cross blood drives. Don was also a member of the Zebulon Downtown Development Authority, past president of Citizens to Promote Pike, Chairman of the 20/20 Project and was instrumental in the restoration of the courthouse. He was a founding director of Pike Historic Preservation, Inc., serving as its president for many years and was named Pike County Citizen of the Year. He was a pecan farmer, loving husband, father and grandfather.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Donald Banks Collins Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Billie Collins; son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Michelle Collins of Forsyth; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Robert McLean of Woodstock; grandchildren, Keith and Daniel Collins, Evan McLean, and Shaina Castellaw, brothers and sisters-in-law, John T. and Sandra Collins of Rome, and Joel and Jenny Collins of Phenix City, Ala.; several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service arranged by the Kiwanis Club of Pike County and Citizens to Promote Pike will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2015 at 7 p.m. at Moody-Daniel Funeral Home, 10170 Highway 19, Zebulon.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Pike Historic Preservation, P.O. Box 489, Zebulon, GA 30295 or Kiwanis Club of Pike County, P.O. Box 1204, Zebulon, GA 30295.
A Red Cross blood drive will be held in Don's honor on Monday, Aug. 3, 2015 from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Edwards Senior Center.

News has been received with the passing of Delta Golden Wings member retired Delta pilot Captain Donald Banks Collins Sr., age 78.  Captain Collins joined Delta Air Lines 02-14-1966 and retired at the mandatory age 60 in 1996, based 030/ATL.

Don Collins, a former county commissioner who was instrumental in promoting the renovation of the courthouse, passed away Thursday, May 14. He was a leader of many organizations in the community and was the president of the Pike Historic Preservation and a founding member of the nonprofit organization. He was a longtime Kiwanis member and a faithful blood donor and helper at American Red Cross blood drives. For many years, he managed the Tour de Pike for Kiwanis, which has brought thousands of cyclists to the area over the years.
