___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Contributor contact info is generally removed before posting (unless requested otherwise).

Obituary............................Jon David Miller passed away on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 in Coppell, Texas, surrounded by family and with complete assurance of his heavenly home.
Jon Miller was born October 10, 1962 at Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota. The third child of Jack and JoAnne Miller, Jon grew up in South Dakota, California, North Dakota, and Colorado before the family settled in Wimberley, Texas. In 1980, Jon graduated from Jack C. Hays High School, where he excelled academically (salutatorian) and athletically as a member of the golf and basketball teams. Destined to be an Aggie, Jon received his BBA in Accounting with Honors in 1984 from Texas A&M University, the place where he met his future wife Angela. Jon was a proud member of the Corps of Cadets, Squadron One, and served as Wing Commander and a Ross Volunteer. After graduation, Jon was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Air Force. He served our country as a T-37 instructor and KC-10 pilot and was a veteran of the Persian Gulf War, flying missions in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

After completing his military service, Jon joined Delta Airlines as a pilot in 1991 and felt privileged to have a domestic and international flying career, but often told his boys and wife his favorite layover was home.

Jon loved his family and was a devoted dad to Matthew, Nathan, and Andrew. One of Jon’s favorite activities was enjoying sports with his boys – whether playing, watching, or coaching their teams, he relished every moment (and there were a lot). He tied with Angela as the boys’ biggest fan, encouraging them in every endeavor – academic, athletic, ministerial, work, and as servant leaders. This past year, Pops was excited to step into his newest role as grandfather to Savon‘Tae and Jack.

Jon’s greatest passion was serving – his family, others, community and country. Jon and Angela have been active members of Valley Ranch Baptist Church since 1992, where he went on youth and other mission trips, delivered food to families in need, spearheaded logistics for the VRBC/Cornerstone Baptist Church Christmas Store, and served on various committees. Even during his four-year health battle, Jon continued to devotedly mentor boys at Tom Landry Elementary School as part of the Big Hope program. Recently, Jon was recognized as the 2017-2018 Big Hope Volunteer of the Year.

Jon was preceded in death by his parents, Jack Miller and Jo Anne Nielsen Miller. Survivors include: his wife of 32 years Angela Dodd Miller; his sons Matthew (wife Caroline) of Hoover, Alabama, Nathan (wife Nicole) of Marble Falls, Texas, and Andrew of Coppell, Texas; grandsons Savon’Tae Miller and Jack Miller; sister Christina Miller (husband Jeffrey Miller) and brother Marcus Miller (wife Laura Lynn); father-in-law and mother-in-law John and Betty Dodd; brother-in-law David Dodd; nephews Brett Miller, Erik Miller, Justin Dodd; and nieces Camryn Miller, Madison Miller and Caroline Dodd. A memorial service to celebrate Jon’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 18th at Valley Ranch Baptist Church in Coppell, Texas. Visitation: 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. on May 17th at the Rolling Oaks Funeral Home in Coppell, TX. Internment: Rolling Oaks Memorial Center, Coppell, TX. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Big Brothers, Big Sisters’ Big Hope Mentoring Initiative (www.bbbstx.org/jonmiller) or Cornerstone Baptist Church, P.O. Box 152551, Dallas, Texas 75215 or to Valley Ranch Baptist Church with a notation designating Big Hope or Cornerstone Baptist Church as the intended recipient.

Proverbs 17:17 tells us that “A friend loveth at all times.” Angela and her sons wish to thank the family members and friends who have faithfully supported them.
