___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Contributor contact info is generally removed before posting (unless requested otherwise).

~ IN MEMORY ~
Delta Captain Gordon D. Ziegler, retired

An entire year as passed since the death of Gordon D. Ziegler on December 29, 2018, following unsuccessful treatment for prostate cancer. Yet Gordon is still greatly missed by his family, friends, former colleagues, and neighbors at "the Home", as he called the lovely Carlsbad By The Sea community where he had resided since 2000. Flying for Delta for 31 years, as he did, was his dream career.

Born in Syracuse, NY, Gordon attended the University of Delaware and later entered the Navy through the NAVCAD program, flying anti-submarine helicopters. He began his Delta career in Atlanta in 1965, a career which he loved, retiring in 1996 as a captain on the Boeing 757-767.

Gordon was known for his keen wit, quirky sense of humor, competitive streak in golf and pickleball, meticulous flying and driving, and his wide curiosity. He was active throughout his life, participating in long bicycle rides with friends until the very week of his death. Stories of his generosity and helpfulness abounded at the gathering of friends following his death, although Gordon himself never sought recognition for such actions.

Gordon is survived by three daughters: Susan (Tommy) Wilkinson of Black Mountain, NC; Annemarie Ziegler of Denver, CO; and Jenny Ziegler of Vista, CA, two granddaughters: Sara (Colin) Holmes of Atlanta, GA and Lila Ziegler of Vista, CA, and also by his former wife, Adele Griffin, and two nephews, Douglas and David (Dee) Tilton.
