___ PCN FLIGHT WEST is sponsored by the Pilot Communication Network and is a service of the PCN provided for the Delta Pilot Retired family of pilot groups. Flight West was started and is maintained to accomplish two main goals. After we become aware of a colleague who has Flown West, 1. We aim to produce a “timely” notice sent to our community that allows for support and interaction from our group toward the grieving family of our friend and colleague. 2. Then, we aim to “archive” that notice on our Flown West Blogspot as a lasting accessible place of Dignity and Honor of our colleague for family legacy and posterity. Contributor contact info is generally removed before posting (unless requested otherwise).

Obituary : Hugh Ross Murphy, 78, died January 22nd, 2022 with family by his side in Atlanta, GA.

Family Receiving of Friends will be Feb. 8th from 5-8 pm at HM Patterson Funeral Home in Marietta, GA. Memorial Services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 9th at 10:30 am at East Cobb Presbyterian Church in Marietta, GA with military burial services at 2:30 pm at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA.

Hugh was born Dec. 29th, 1943 in Ligonier, Pennsylvania to Harry and Loraine Ross Murphy. Hugh's favorite memories are those of large family reunions on the 4th of July and at Christmas on his mother's family farm with his older sister Patricia and twin sister Joan.

Hugh graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1965 with a B.S. in Music Education and accepted a job teaching band in Oil City, PA. However, before beginning that position, Hugh was called for a physical related to the draft. He decided to apply for Air Force flight school and after a single semester of teaching, Hugh joined the Air Force in January 1966. Hugh completed flight school in May 1967 and spent four years on active duty – one of which was served in Vietnam. He was awarded many honors for his service including the Distinguished Flying Cross.

After serving in the Air Force until 1971, Hugh became a Delta Pilot Captain from 1972-2003. Hugh married Dianna Sue Cornell on July 3rd, 1982 and had three children; Rachel, Matthew and Sarah. He has served as a faithful member, choir director and deacon with East Cobb Presbyterian Church for close to 35 years.

After Hugh retired from Delta, he returned to his music education passions and taught from 2006-2011 at Cherokee Christian Schools in Woodstock, GA. as an elementary and middle school music and band teacher.

Hugh became an avid gardener and cook, famous for his incredible tomatoes and huge Thanksgiving day meals shared with family, friends and neighbors alike. Hugh's abundant generosity and 'Dad-jokes' were known by all. He also dedicated committed time to local choirs and ensembles who entertained at local community centers. One of his favorite regular events were his ROMEO lunches (Really Old Men Eating Out) with his closest friends.

Hugh married Carolyn Hallstrom on December 20th, 2016. They enjoyed lots of travel visiting all the shared grandchildren in Arizona, Pennsylvania and South Carolina. Their shared interests surrounding faith, hosting and service enriched their relationship of five years. Few merged families experience the blessings enjoyed by these two.

Hugh Murphy is survived by sisters Patricia Schue and Joan Bundy; wife Carolyn Hallstrom Murphy; daughter Rachel Murphy Hyder (son-in-law Josh Hyder and grandchildren Eve, Bryson, Miriam and Susanna); son Matthew Murphy (Sabrina) and daughter Sarah Murphy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to East Cobb Presbyterian Church designated to Francois Longeiret with ELI (Equipping Leaders International).
