Maureen Helen Barrett Burns

Maureen Burns, loving mother and wife, devout Catholic with a radiant soul, died peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones. Maureen lived a life that touched many with her unwavering devotion to faith, family, and friends. She was 88 years old.

Born in Evanston IL, the only daughter of John and Catherine Neenan Barrett. She attended Marywood High School in Evanston before graduating from Barry College in Miami, Florida. Her life was forever changed when she met her beloved husband, Robert Burns, on a blind date. They were married on September 10, 1960, and shared a remarkable 65-year relationship. They eventually settled on Lake Minnetonka near Excelsior where they raised 4 children and entertained 5 grandchildren.

Maureen’s devotion to the Catholic Church was central to her life as a confident and faithful member at St. Therese in Deephaven and St. John the Baptist in Excelsior. She served in numerous roles including fundraising for St. John's Gathering Place building project and construction of Holy Family Catholic High School in Victoria, and founder of the BeFriender Ministry at St. John’s, a pastoral care mission providing trained, compassionate listeners to those navigating aging, illness, and grief. Maureen’s faith gave her confidence to Chair the Twin Cities Annual Catholic Appeal and St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary.

Throughout her life, Maureen had a passion for travel and adventure. Professionally, Maureen found joy from her three decades of work in the travel industry and led tour groups to see the world. She enjoyed countless travel adventures—often with Bob by her side— which took her through the Panama Canal, South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and across Europe. These journeys created lifelong friendships, treasured memories, and ultimately compelled her to join the International Federation of Women in Tourism.

At home, Maureen enjoyed swimming, sailing, painting, knitting, and social gatherings. Family and friends held a high priority for Maureen. She cherished Sunday night dinners, sunsets from the deck, and most of all, reunions with family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Robert Burns; children, Sheila Zats (Terry), Kevin Burns (Ada), Patricia Burns, and Kathleen Daniels (David); grandchildren, Jorge Burns, Kaily Burns, Melissa Burns, Lucia Zats and Shawna Zats; her brother, Bill Barrett (Kathleen), cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Catherine Barrett, and brothers, Patrick Barrett and James Barrett.

A celebration of life will be held at St. Therese Catholic Church in Deephaven on Tuesday, May 20th. Visitation 11:30-12:30. Mass at 12:30 with lunch to follow. Mass will be live streamed on St. Therese website. (https://www.st-therese.org/live) Burial at 3:00pm at Resurrection Cemetery in Shorewood. Memorials to MN Landscape Arboretum, Lake Minnetonka Historical Society, or a charity of your choice. Dale Jerome Lodin, devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and steadfast friend, died of natural causes at his home in Houston on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at the age of 88. He was born on March 2, 1937, in Rockford, Illinois.

Dale spoke fondly and often of his childhood in Rockford, making friends that he would cherish throughout his life.

Indeed, he valued personal relationships above all else. He understood better than most that friendship is a two-way street—and if being a good friend means meeting the other halfway, none of his friends ever had to travel very far. Those of us fortunate enough to call him “friend” will remember his quiet generosity and unmatched thoughtfulness.

Dale served the United States as a pilot and captain in the Air Force. He later flew as a pilot for Delta Airlines. His outreach on behalf of both Delta and the Air Line Pilots Association extended that care beyond the cockpit, benefiting fellow pilots and several charitable organizations—most notably, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Dale is survived by his wife, Judy; his grandson, Kyle Busse, of Houston; his daughter, Cathy Lodin Busse, and her husband, David Busse; their daughter, Haley Busse, and their son, Luke Busse—all of Austin; and five nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother and only sibling, Don, of Anaheim, California.

The world is poorer for his passing—but so much richer for his life.

Vernon Norell Obituary

Maple Grove MN - Norell, Vernon Age 89, died March 26th at his home in Maple Grove. He was born June 26th, 1935, in Smoky Hollow Township, near the towns of Remer and Hill City. His parents were Verona and Forest. He grew up with a love of hard work and spent his boyhood learning how to plant, harvest, fish, hunt, trap, chop wood, pick berries, and repair practically everything. Dad treasured his memories of his wonderful parents, his five brothers and sisters, his aunts and uncles, and the assorted characters that made up the small community. He was able to remember with clarity, and gratefulness, minute details of his youth. As Dad recalled it, he was five years old when a plane flew over the family's home on Windy Lake, and it was in that moment that he became determined to fly. After high school, he joined the Air Force, and used the GI Bill to attend flight school at Parks College in St. Louis, where he met and married Janet Moses. With Mom at his side, they moved to various states, following job opportunities, and making dear friends along the way. Dad's ultimate goal was flying for his beloved North Central Airlines. He served the airline with distinction as it changed from North Central, to Republic, and finally to Northwest Airlines. Dad was one of those lucky, rare people who truly loved his profession, and we remember him heading to work, in uniform, roaring off in his old car with a cup of coffee in hand and a smile on his face. In retirement, he and Mom enjoyed travel that took them as far as New Zealand, South America, and Alaska. He spent lots of time at the family home on Windy Lake and flying his float plane all over the north country, and had many canoe trips in the BWCA. He delighted in his grandsons, Avery and Noel. Vern is survived by a daughter, Karen Norell (husband Dung Truong, grandsons Avery and Noel Truong) and a son, Michael Norell, both of Golden Valley. He is also survived by siblings, Minerva Roeser of Litchfield, Carol Beha-Metzger of Edina, and Rodney Norell of Big Lake, in addition to nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Norell, in 2007, his parents Verona and Forest, brother Darrell Norell, and sister Marie Schwappach. Burial will be at 2 pm, May 29th, at Lakeview Cemetery, Windy Lake. We will celebrate what would have been Dad's 90th birthday with a gathering of friends and family at Karen's home in Golden Valley on June 28th. Captain Jeffrey George Greenwood, USN (Ret), a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away, unexpectedly, on April 25, 2025, at age 83.

Jeff is survived by his loving wife Kathy, son Robert and step-sons Rob and Mark, six grandchildren, and his brother-in-law R. Forrest. He is preceded in death by his much-loved sister, Nancy.

Jeff was born on January 2, 1942 to Ferdinand and Genevieve Greenwood. He grew up on his family's farm in Howard City, MI where he worked after school and summers there, and on the Grassley Dairy Farm where his lifelong love of tractors began. He remained close to many of his high school classmates.

Upon graduation from Ferris State University in MI, Greenwood entered flight school at Pensacola Naval Air Station. He was a highly decorated Vietnam pilot; with 29 medals, including two Distinguished Flying Crosses, four Navy Commendation Medals, Navy Achievement Award, and Air Medals for Meritorious Achievement in Arial flight. Jeff enjoyed his retirement years. He built a large tractor barn on their property, in which he restored a 1946 John Deere BW and a 1953 John Deere 50. Kenneth Barclay Ruhm

Ken Ruhm, of Holderness and Heritage Heights in Concord, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 12th, after an extraordinary 90 years of life. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Nancy.

Born in Utica, New York, in 1934, Ken was the elder of two sons of Kenneth and Ruth Ruhm. He grew up in Herkimer, New York, and graduated from the University of Rochester in 1955, where he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Air Force.

After completing Undergraduate Pilot Training in 1958, Ken served multiple tours as an instructor pilot at Webb AFB in Big Spring, Texas, and Williams AFB in Chandler, Arizona, training students in the T-6, T-33, and T-38 aircraft. It was during his assignment to Williams AFB in 1963 that he met Nancy and her two young sons, Michael and Robert, who would become his own. Ken and Nancy were married in Herkimer, NY, in December 1963 and welcomed their third son, Brian, in April 1965.

Shortly afterward, Ken deployed to Vietnam, where he flew nearly 300 combat missions in the Douglas A-1E Skyraider and served alongside Medal of Honor recipient Major Bernie Fisher. For his courage and distinguished service, Ken was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Following his return from Vietnam, Ken left active duty and began a civilian aviation career with Pan American Airways, relocating to San Francisco. There, he and Nancy welcomed their fourth son, Steven, in December 1968. In 1972, Ken transferred to Boston and settled in Holderness, New Hampshire, where he would spend nearly all of his remaining years.

When furloughed by Pan Am in 1976, Ken chose to stay in New Hampshire to raise his family, even though it meant stepping away from commercial flying. During this time, he pursued an MBA and worked for the Holderness School and several regional airlines, including Winnipesaukee and Precision Airlines. He was recalled by Pan Am in 1985 and later joined Delta Air Lines, retiring in 1996.

Ken remained active in retirement, ski racing, cycling, traveling, volunteering, and spending as much time as possible with his children and grandchildren. He and Nancy were active in the Waterville Valley “Silver Streaks” ski program, and Ken continued racing into his seventies. Together, they skied in Courchevel, France; biked through Germany, Italy, and Vietnam; and cruised to Greece, Alaska and England. Ken volunteered with the Squam Lakes Association as a water quality sampler and was a vital part of the team that harvested and split firewood to heat the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center. One of Ken’s greatest joys was his role as “Pop Pop” to his grandchildren. For more than a decade, he and Nancy hosted “Camp Gamma and Pop Pop,” creating cherished memories for their family.

Ken is survived by his wife Nancy, his four devoted sons — Michael, Robert, Brian, and Steven — seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
