Word has been received of the passing of USAF veteran and retired WA/DL Captain Thomas John Colette Jr., age 76.  Tom was born and raised in Michigan.  He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret Ely Colette in September 2002.  Captain Colette hired on with Western 04-27-1964 and retired with Delta at the mandatory age 60, based LAX.

Tom was my T-28 instructor pilot at Spence Air Base, Moultrie, Georgia in the spring of 1960. I was an aviation cadet in USAF class 61-D and had the good luck to be his student. Later we both retired as Delta Captains and I always had great memories of flying with him. My sincere condolences to the family.

Update to our PCN posting dated September 4, 2010 and the tragic death of ATL DL dispatcher Jamin Coyle.  Jamin worked in Flight Support, Dept. 022, ATG.  Teenager Ryan Ray has now been convicted of robbing and murdering Jamin.   Ray could be one of the first juveniles sentenced to life in Florida. Ray was 16 when he took the life of Jamin Coyle, age 39.  The U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled that minors may be sentenced to mandatory life without parole.

LANCASTER — Jamin Monte Coyle, 39, of Lancaster, was tragically taken on Sept. 1, 2010 in Leesburg, Fla.

 

He was born on March 5, 1971, in Richmond, Ind. He was the wonderful son of Joe and Shirley Coyle of Lancaster.

 

Jamin was a proud and dedicated employee of Delta Airlines, where he was based out of Atlanta as a pilot and dispatcher in control. His other love was baseball, where the Red Sox ruled.

 

Also surviving are two sisters, Connie (Steve) Maupin of Monticello and Carrie Johnson of Lancaster; two brothers, Michael (Sandee) Coyle of Nicholasville and Jared (Brenda) Coyle of Flemingsburg; a grandmother, Euginia Young; five nieces and nephews, Sarah (Chet) Roller, Aubry Coyle, Garett Oakes, Shannon (Katie) Poynter and Jalen Coyle; three great-nephews; three great-nieces; and a beloved dog, Wishbone.

 

He was preceeded in death by a sister, Cynthia Rae Coyle; and grandparents, Ray Young and Alfred and Marie Coyle.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Spurlin Funeral Home Chapel in Lancaster with Bros. Frank Foster, Cecil Himes and Jalen Coyle officiating. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

 

Active pallbearers will be Shannon Poynter, Jalen Coyle, Chet Roller, Steve Maupin, Garett Oakes and Mike Christopher. Honorary pallbearers will be Lonnie Napier, Billy Spurlock, Micky Rhodus, Aubry Coyle, Steve Clay and Sarah Roller. Burial will be in Lancaster Cemetery.

 

Jamin was a precious son, brother and uncle who will be missed.

Jamin Coyle: Teen gets life sentence for fatal robbery:

A teen who was convicted of robbing and murdering a pilot in Lake County he met online could be one of the first juveniles sentenced to life. The U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled that minors may be sentenced to mandatory life without parole.

Ryan Ray, 18, was found guilty in the murder and robbery of Jamin Coyle early this summer and sentenced to life in prison Friday.

The judge also gave him 10 years for the robbery conviction.

Ray's age at the time of the 2010 murder was 16, which made him ineligible for the death penalty. But in Florida, a first-degree murder conviction carries a minimum life sentence.

Bill Gross, who prosecuted the Ray case, had said before Friday's sentencing that some juveniles who had been given life for first-degree murder in Lake County had recently expressed intentions to challenge their sentence. They viewed an earlier High Court ruling that found that life sentences should not be automatically given and that a judge had to consider the age, maturity and circumstances.

Gross had said Ray could try to use the new ruling to get a lesser sentence.

After weighing the evidence at looking at the defendant's background, Circuit Judge Lawrence J. Semento said Ray's actions were not those of a child but of a man when sentencing him to life Friday.

"If they are old enough to commit such heinous crimes they should be old enough to serve the time," said Leesburg police Capt. Rob Hicks, whose department investigated the case..

Coyle was a Delta Airlines pilot and dispatcher from Lancaster, Ky., when he was found Sept. 1, 2010 on the side of a Leesburg road in his underwear, choked to death and his wallet missing.

Leesburg police found Coyle's unoccupied Chevrolet Tahoe within a mile, with blood in the interior in a vacant lot at 603 Newell Hill Road in Leesburg, and his wallet in a trash bin at the nearby Newell Hill Villas apartment complex.

An autopsy revealed Coyle had been strangled. Ray's DNA was found under Coyle's fingernails.

According to testimony, Coyle met Ray online. And while Coyle was visiting his parents in Summerfield, the pair hung out on Aug. 31.

On the stand, Ray admitted to hanging out with Coyle the day before he was found, including going to the movies at the Rialto Theatre in The Villages. Ray testified the two had consented to a back rub in the man's van. Ray added at some point Coyle started making advances-- and he got scared and choked Coyle, but when he left the van Coyle was still alive.

He added he later went back to the van, to confront Coyle and another friend of his actually choked Coyle to death. Ray denied robbing the victim.

Gross argued against Ray's claims.

According to testimony during the murder trial, a witness whom Ray frequently hung out with, the defendant uncharacteristically paid for vodka, cigars and snacks during one of their regular get togethers on the night before the victim was found dead.

Police also testified that Ray had asked a friend to throw the wallet away.

Gross said they couldn't find any evidence that the friend was the actual murderer.

Obituary: 

Carl Scrivener, age 73, died on November 1, 2012, a victim of cancer. His wife of 52 years, Karyl, was at his side. The couple had met while attending Quincy High School, and they married soon after Carl’s graduation from George Washington University in 1960. His career always involved aviation. He was an Air Force pilot, a captain for two major airlines, the commander of an Air National Guard base in New York and a lecturer for Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, in Daytona, FL. In retirement, they had lived in Cotuit for 13 years.

 

He served for seven years in the active Air Force, mostly at Dover AFB, Delaware. There he was a line pilot, flying what was then one of the world’s biggest airplanes, the C-124 Globemaster built by Douglas. The mission called for flights all over the world, often on short notice. Some destinations were difficult, involving crude runways, lack of navigation facilities or extremes of weather. In his last years on active duty, he graduated from the Air Force’s accident investigation course to work on aviation safety problems.

 

In 1967 he left the airforce to join Pan American World Airways at Kennedy Airport, New York. For nine years he worked from “JFK” as a copilot and navigator on the Boeing 707. His favorite routes, he would say, were along the southern tier of Europe, Lisbon-Barcelona-Nice-Rome, and Beirut. Occasionally those trips would go as far east as Teheran during the days of the Shah’s regime. Unhappily, by the mid-1970s, business problems were getting the best of Pan Am, and along with hundreds of others, he was furloughed.

 

The layoff from airlines lasted nine years, almost unprecedented in the industry. During that time he turned to the Air National Guard for full-time employment. He began as a “forward air control” pilot at a New York ANG unit, and later he moved up to become the director of operations for six ANG bases in New York State. In early 80’s, he was a foremost planner to relocate one of the airbases to Stewart Airport, Newburgh, New York. Stewart, a former air force base, boasted long runways and little traffic, a situation ripe for development. The Air National Guard acquired giant C-5 Galaxy aircraft from the active forces to place at Stewart. Carl became the first full-time commander of the reactivated base.

 

By 1985 prospects were improving for the airlines, and Carl accepted Pan Am’s call to return. Initially, he was assigned as a first officer on an Airbus 310. Pan AM was early among U.S. airlines to buy from Airbus. With no training facility for the airplane here in the states, Carl and other Airbus pilots had the pleasure of “checking out” at the factory in Toulouse, France. Later, with the seniority system advancing, he became a Pan AM captain on the Boeing 727. In all, before his career was over, he would become “rated” or Captain qualified on five different airliners.

 

Pan Am’s troubles were not over, and in 1991 the company went bankrupt. Carl along with about one third of all Pan Am pilots, was able to gain an immediate position with Delta Airlines. Delta wanted the Pan Am routes across the Atlantic. The FAA agreed to that proposition, but as a condition, Delta had to accept the ocean experience of the Pan Am pilots. As the Pan Am pilots were integrated into the Delta seniority list, Carl moved backwards to fly as a “first” on Boeing 767’s. With time, he was able to get back to captain on domestic routes.

 

After the mandatory age-60 retirement from airline flying, and not ready to cut his ties with aviation, Carl joined Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach Florida as a lecturer in aeronautical science subjects. He taught the winter semester, allowing himself and Karyl to enjoy life in Florida. His tenure at Embry Riddle lasted four years, but the Scriveners continued to journey south every winter thereafter.

 

In Cotuit, Carl was a trustee at the Cahoon Museum of American Art for four years. He was also an avid “Sunday painter,” and he enjoyed entering his work at various fundraisers around the Cape.

 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters and two sons: Alison Spillman of Jamestown, NC, Robin Glenn of St. Petersburg, FL, Susan Sullivan of Sandwich, Peter Scrivener of Suffield, CT, and Lawrence Scrivener of Bridgewater his sisters Carol Chapman of Duxbury, Gwen Gillen of Hustisford, WI. There are 12 grandchildren, more than enough to overflow the Cotuit house on holidays.

 

Visiting hours will be held at the Chapman Cole and Gleason Funeral Home 74 Algonquin Ave. Mashpee on Wednesday November 7, 2012 from 5-7pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at the Christ the King Church 3 Jobs Fishing Rd. Mashpee on Thursday November 8, 2012 at 10:00am. Following a reception at the Church Hall, Burial will be held at Mosswood Cemetery at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society P.O. Bernice A. “Toni” Layton, 77, a long time resident of Park City passed away on Monday, October 29, 2012 in Escondido, CA. Mrs. Layton was born on January 27, 1935 in Pittsburg, CA. She married her husband Charles on September 10, 1955. While living in Park City Toni was very active in St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and worked at the Kimball Art Center.

 

Mrs. Layton enjoyed painting, hiking, flowers and traveling the world with her husband. The Layton’s moved to California in 2009.

 

She is survived by children: Teresa Dix, Lake Elsinore, CA, Kelly (Frank) Fiorito, Escondido, CA, Steve (Dawn) Layton, Temecula, CA, David (Michelle) Layton, Murrieta, CA; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and step-mother Frances Romo who is 97. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles in 2010, parents Reynaldo and Agnes Romo, brother Richard Romo, and son-in-law Russell Dix in 2012.

 

A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, November 5, 2012 at San Rafael Catholic Church in San Diego, CA with the Committal at San Marcos Cemetery in San Marcos, CA.

Biography:

Wesley Leon Upchurch of Denton, TX passed away on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 in Denton, at the age of 81. He was born on August 26, 1931 in Inverness, MS to Ira and Virginia (Green) Upchurch. He was married to Betty Sasser. Wesley was a member of Denton Golden Wings. He enjoyed building furniture, socializing with friends, and flying.

 

A visitation will be held on Friday, November 2, 2012 from 6-8pm at the Denton Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2012 at 2pm at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church at 1200 N. Elm St. in Denton. Rev. Donald K. Johnson will officiate.

Word has been received of the passing of DL retired pilot and Delta Golden Wings member Captain Wesley ‘Wes’ Upchurch, age 81.  Captain Upchurch hired on with Delta 09-03-1957 and retired in 1991 at the mandatory age 60, based DFW.  Earlier in his career Captain Upchurch had been based ATL.

Subject: Death of DL retired Captain Wes Upchurch

From Captain George Jetton:

Leigh just called this morning to let us know Wes went home to be with his Lord last night. His services are pending and we'll let you know when the funeral/memorial service has been arranged. Betty and I are going to Denton to be with the family today and will hopefully know more later this evening. Please pray for Bettye, Leigh, Les and their families. They know Wes is in a better place, but their sorrow is great and he will be missed by all.

Subject: Latest on Wes Upchurch

Wes is not doing well at all. They have moved him to the Alzheimer's unit of the home and may be moved to another facility at a later date. The West Nile Virus has taken its toll on Wes causing severe dementia. The family has ask that he have no visitors at this time.

We all need to say a whole bunch of prayers for both Wes and Betty.

..... this is the information I have ....8/25 from Joe Stewart ... Retired pilot Wes Upchurch is in Denton Regional Hospital, room 620. He is suspected to have West Nile Virus. I don't know any details other than he is not doing to well. Would you please put this out on your e mail net work?  jose3m@yahoo.com
