A celebration of life in loving memory of Janey Sticka will be held Sunday, February 24th from 1:00-4:00 PM, at the home of Mike & Jan Koren in Villa Park CA. Captain Sticka had written us earlier that Janey had suffered an aneurysm while in southern California assisting their daughter. The aneurysm followed by strokes meant that the outcome was not looking good. Janey had been in the very attentive care of Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo CA.  Jane Lea Sticka was 68 years of age at the time of her passing. Perhaps the best place to send personal condolences to the family would be

Word has been received that WA/DL retired pilot Captain Howard Will has passed away today at the age of 75. I believe Howard E. Will Jr. was born/raised in the Philadelphia PA area to parents Howard E. and Ethel (Yeagle) Will. Captain Will hired on with Western 06-03-1968 and retired with Delta based LAX and then SLC prior to retiring.

Word has been received with news that Vietnam veterand and retired DL pilot Captain Robert J. ‘Bob’ Stanek has passed away at the age of 75. Captain Stanek hired on with Delta 05-03-1965 and was based ATL. Arrangements have been entrusted to H. M. Patterson Funeral Home in Marietta GA. A funeral mass will be said for Captain Stanek on Wednesday February 6th at the Catholic Church of St. Ann with viewing the evening prior at the funeral home. Captain Stanek had most recently resided at 4811 Lake Fjord Pass , Marietta GA 30068-1636.

Obituary:

Mr. Robert “Bob” Stanek of Marietta passed away January 31, 2013. Bob was born in Chicago, IL on April 9, 1937 to the late Frances and Walter Stanek. After his graduation from William Howard Taft High School, he went to the University of Illinois and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in architectural design. He lettered in track while in college. He enjoyed running throughout his life, running in 4 marathons, including the Marine Marathon in Quantico, VA. After college, Bob served in the Marine Corps and was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam from 1963-1964. He survived being shot down twice. Bob often said “The best 5 years of my life were my 5 years in the Marines”. Bob was a car collector and belonged to numerous car clubs. He leaves behind his brother, Donald W. Stanek and his wife Rose as well as many friends. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at 11:00 am at the Catholic Church of St Ann. Interment will follow a reception at 2:30pm at Georgia National Cemetery. The visitation will be on Tuesday from 6:00-8:00pm at H.M. Patterson & Son Canton Hill. Notification of the passing of WWII veteran and retired NWA pilot Virgil ‘Virg’ William Bench, age 86. Although the obituary says retired from Northwest Airlines, and given the captain’s age, I suspect Captain Bench retired with Republic prior to the 1986 merger with NWA. If anyone has more information to offer, please advise and we can post it.

Obituary:

Virgil ‘Virg’ William Bench, age 86, of Sun City, Az., died at 10:25 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, from undiagnosed massive blod clots at Freedom Plaza Hospice in Peoria, Az. He was born in Barton, Ohio to Eleanor (Bertine) an Charles Bench, Sr.

A graduate of Alliance High School, he served in the United States Navy during World War II, Virgil was a commercial airline pilot for 33 years. He retired from Northwest Airlines.

He loved running, swimming & bicycling. In his early years, he was a body builder, achieving the title of Mr. West Coast in the early '50s. Surviving are his daughters, Cindi Bench of Sugarland, Tx., Gina Bench of Houston, Tx., his grandchildren, Tyson Ray Phillips of Houston, Tx. and Alayna Marie Phillips a college student at San Marcos, Tx.; his sister Violet Rowell and brother Jerry Bench of Alliance, Oh.; and many nieces & nephews. Also surviving is his longtime companion, Ms. Frances Pevoto of Sun City, Az. In addition to his mother and father, Virgil was preceded in death by his wife Lorraine (Johnson),from whom he was divorced; his brother Charles Bench, Jr.; sister-in-law, Mary (Kacarab) Bench, and brother in-law-law, Milo Rowell. According to his request, cremation has taken place, and there will be no services locally. A Memorial will be held sometime in May in Alliance, Ohio. Arrangements are made by Menke Funeral Home. Sun City, AZ.

 Obituary:

Thomas Eugene Harpring, 74, of Temple died January 30, 2013 at his residence. Born in Paris, IL, on September 19, 1938, he was a man of great experience, knowledge, talents, words, and positive outlook on life. Joining the United States Navy at 16, he traveled the globe; open to all that he encountered, one of the most stubborn yet non-judgmental individuals to walk this earth. He worked for Delta Air Lines in Simulator Maintenance for 27 years before retiring.

A beloved father and grandpa, he taught us the value of hard work, the spirit of giving, and about the kind of person we should aspire to be. He guided us with his open heart, and embraced all that he came in contact with. Such a giving soul, we have all gained so much from his wealth of knowledge as well as his story telling and life lessons while sitting around at family dinners. We were taught to use “balderdash” when we were frustrated and how to “piddle” when we needed something to do. We will truly miss his deep voice and presence in the room. He lived life with no regrets and always said, we “shouldn’t go should-en on ourselves” and we all have the power to choose how we view that which we experience.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Richard Harpring, Robert Harpring, Joan Harpring, Betty Harpring.

He is survived by his daughter Jo Harpring, of Decatur, his loving ex-wife Sarah Harpring of Decatur, 4 step-sons, 10 grandchildren, 2 sisters, and 2 brothers.

The family will receive family and friends to celebrate his life at his daughter’s home Sunday afternoon, February 3, 2013 from 3:00 – 6:00 P.M.

In accordance with his wishes, the body was cremated, and in lieu of flowers the family requests that those desiring to do so make a contribution on his behalf to the American Cancer Society - 970 Clairmont Road NE, Atlanta, GA or to Northwest Georgia Oncology Centers, P.C. – Carrollton Office - 157 Clinic Avenue, Suite 101, Carrollton, GA 30117.
