News with the passing of RNPA member retired Northwest pilot Captain R. Blair Smith has reached us.  Friends write that Captain Smith joined Northwest Airlines in 1968 and was based Anchorage at the time of his retirement.  Memorial Services for Captain Smith will be held Saturday, March 26th in Arizona.  Graveside services will be held March 31st in Alaska.....please see information below.

Obituary ......................... R. Blair Smith (1945 - 2016)

R. Blair Smith died peacefully surrounded by family in Chandler, AZ on Sunday, March 13, 2016, at the age of 70.

 

Blair is survived by his wife, Krikitt Smith, his children, Sonya Smith, Jared Smith, Jolyn Smith, Jacob Smith, Travis Smith, Wayne Humbert and Stephen Zazilenski, and siblings, Samuel Smith, Mary Martinez, R Brent Smith and Larry Smith. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Blair is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Ila Smith, and his brother, Vern Smith

 

Blair was born on June 30, 1945 in Rexburg, Idaho. He was an airline pilot for 36 years achieving the rank of 747 Captain for Northwest Airlines (now Delta).  He met and married his wife of 20 years in Wasilla, Alaska.  As a young man he served a mission for the LDS church in Uruguay and Paraguay, and later in life, he served a second mission at the Bishop’s Storehouse in Palmer, Alaska. His passions included hunting and fishing, as well as, building and flying light aircraft. He wrote five books and many poems; two of his books were published and are available on Amazon. He enjoyed making wooden ink pens in his spare time, and loved sharing that hobby with his children and grandchildren. He had an adventurous spirit and unflagging sense of humor and taught his family to live well and love life.

 

Blair will be remembered in a service on Saturday, March 26, 2016 at the LDS Chapel at 18550 E. Riggs Rd., Queen Creek, AZ, 85142.  There will be a viewing at 9:00 AM and a memorial service at 10:00 AM.  A graveside service and burial will take place in Anchorage, AK at the Fort Richardson National Cemetery on Thursday, March 31, 2016 at 1:30 PM. There will be a memorial service in Wasilla, Alaska. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in his honor to the Boy Scouts of America.

Sunday night, March 13, R. Blair Smith passed away in Queen Creek, AZ.  He had been declining for some time.  Blair was hired by Northwest Airlines on 9/23/68 and retired as a 747 Captain in Anchorage.  Further details of his life will be published later.

His services will be Saturday, March 26 at the LDS Chapel, 18550 Ridge Road, Queen Creek, AZ 85142.  Viewing will begin at 9 A.M., and the service will begin at 10 A.M. 

Blair's remains will be flown to Anchorage, Alaska, for interment, but there are no details on that now........................

Notification with the passing of retired Delta pilot Captain Douglas LeRoy Raasch, age 74.  Captain Raasch joined Delta Air Lines 01-05-1970 and was based 030/PDX at the time of retirement in 2001.

Douglas LeRoy Raasch died at his home on March 16, 2016 from complications from Parkinson's Disease and a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. A memorial service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church at 322 West Pecan Street on Monday, March 21 at 11 am.

 

Douglas was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on December 14, 1941 to Edward and Grace Raasch. When he was in 2nd grade, his family moved to Corpus Christi, TX. He graduated from Roy Miller High in 1960 then attended SMU and the University of North Texas, where he graduated in 1964. While at North Texas, he was President of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

 

Immediately after graduation, Doug joined the Navy as an officer candidate and began to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a pilot. While on a short leave from the Navy, Doug married his college sweetheart, Martha Sue Ellis, on December 20, 1964 in Dallas, TX. While in the Navy, during the Vietnam War, he served two tours on the aircraft carrier USS Kearsage, based in Coronado, CA. The Navy life took them to many states, including Florida, California and Texas. After the Navy, Doug began his career as an airline pilot with Delta airlines and, after living in Chicago, Atlanta and Dallas, Doug, Sue, Jeff, who was born in California and Maren, born in Dallas, settled in Sherman.

 

While in Sherman, Doug, just to see if he could, started a business, Textile Supply Company, marketing and manufacturing clean room products for the tech industries, with offices in Sherman, Austin, El Paso, and Phoenix, selling it after ten-plus years.

 

He was also involved with Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge where a hiking trail is named for him. Doug was a true Renaissance Man. He loved the outdoors, especially the Pacific Northwest, where he and Sue had a condo as he finished his career with Delta. He loved chocolate, carpentry, gardening, and George Strait and Willie, and cried over Bach. He loved books and history, compiling a large library with special fondness for Lincoln, Churchill and Theodore Roosevelt, yet developed a recent enthusiasm for the Longmire stories and Dan Silva. Doug had a succession of beloved Labrador Retrievers and designed two homes, with a real regret that he could live in the current home such a short time. He had a passion for learning and had a wealth of knowledge on just about any subject.

 

Doug is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sue, son, Jeff Raasch and his wife Haley, daughter, Maren Doherty and her husband Michael, sister Jan Schronk and brother-in-law Stacy, brother-in-law George Ellis and his wife Anne, nieces and nephews, current Lab, Lizzie, and his favorite grandson, Alex Doherty.

Word from the family has been received with the passing of RNPA member retired Northwest pilot Captain William Gaylord Carrothers II, age 83.  Captain Carrothers joined Northwest Airlines 02-12-1958 and retired in 1992.  Captain Carrothers is survived by his wife Patricia 'Pat' and their children (son Bill Carrothers is a professional pianist, composer). 

Arrangements are not yet known.

In Memory of Jack D. Hendricks
April 28, 1934 - March 11, 2016

Jack D. Hendricks, 81 of Huntington passed away at 12:05 p.m. on Friday, March 11, 2016 at the Parkview Huntington Hospital. Jack was a commercial pilot for Delta Airlines for 28 years retiring in 1994. Jack was a 1952 graduate of Huntington High school; he also attended Indiana Tech and the University of Wisconsin. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1963; he went through the Cadets program where he become a pilot. He also flew in the Air Guard at Fort Wayne and Madison, WI. Over the years Jack flew 18 different types of Aircraft. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. Jack enjoyed playing golf, watching the NCAA Basketball Tournament, his favorite sports teams were the Green Bay Packers, the Chicago Cubs and the Duke Blue Devils basketball team. He greatly enjoyed chocolate milkshakes.

 

Jack was born on April 28, 1934 in Huntington, IN a son of Jesse Hendricks and Mildred A. Stults.

He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Smart on January 15, 1958 in Fort Wayne. His wife survives.

 

Additional Survivors include two Sons: Jeffrey Hendricks of Atlanta, GA and Gregory (Liz) Hendricks of Minneapolis, MN; a grandson: Piers Byron of Wales, UK. 3 Sister-in-laws: Sally Hendricks of South Bend, Al Hendricks of Huntington and Pam Smart of Avon Park, FL. A brother-in-law: Bob Smart of Huntington and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by 2 brothers: Robert Hendricks and Richard Hendricks and his parents.

 

A Memorial service will be held on Monday, March 14, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Myers Funeral Home, Huntington Chapel, 2901 Guilford St., Huntington, IN with Don Rentschler officiating. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the service on Monday.

Ray Gene Piland
July 13, 1941 ~ March 1, 2016

Our best friend and a husband of 52 years passed away on March 1 in Park City, Utah....Ray Gene Piland.

Gene Piland, was born in Dallas to William L. (Dick) and Mary Followell Piland.  He graduated from Texas Christian University in May 1964.  While at TCU he met the love of his life, Jacquelyn Gregory and they married in August 1963.  Their Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity brothers continue to be best friends and meet on a regular basis.

After college, Gene attended Air Force pilot training at Big Spring, Texas.  Upon graduation he became an instructor pilot and continued to train pilots on the T-38 aircraft for the duration of his time in the service.  His pilot training class is still close and meets regularly.  Gene achieved the rank of Captain in the Air Force.  After joining Western Airlines, it would be a while before anyone called him "Captain" again.

Gene was the consummate gentleman.  He was funny and sincere and always seemed to know just what to say to make everyone laugh and relax.  When he was not at work flying for Western or Delta, Gene and Jackie spent most of the last thirty years in Park City where they always seemed to have a beautiful house filled with happy, well-fed people.  Friends who played bridge with him wondered how he managed to win so often.  Gene played bridge by rules known only to hm.  He was just one of those resilient guys who seemed to know how to push past whatever life threw at him, without ever taking himself too seriously.

He loved to fly fish, play bridge, travel and hose the neighborhood 4th of July party.  In 2002, he served as an Olympic Host.  After he retired from Delta Air Lines, Gene was a member of Kiwanis Club, serving as Park City Kiwanis President, 2003-2004 and Lieutenant Governor 2006-2008.  He worked to establish a High School Key Club and participated in many other community endeavors.

Gene is survived by his wife Jackie of Park City, his brother Don Piland and sister-in-law Susan Piland, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

It is with a sad an grieving heart that I must inform you that Gene Piland quite unexpectedly passed away yesterday. Gene had a small leg injury which had become infected. Sepsis set in,  and his diminished immune system was unable to overcome the infection.
