Brigadier General John (Jack) J. Zito, USAF Retired, passed away peacefully on September 4 surrounded by his family. Jack was born in Troy, NY on March 25, 1928, the only child of Damian Zito and Margaret O’Connor. Orphaned at age 5, he was raised by loving extended family members. Jack was forever indebted to them for their kindness and support. Jack graduated from Catholic Central High School in Troy, NY where he participated in the Civilian Air Patrol. Immediately upon graduation, he enlisted in the Marines and served at the end of WWII and the Korean Conflict. The story goes that as Jack sat in a cold, muddy foxhole in Korea, he viewed air support in the skies above and vowed to become a fighter pilot. Returning stateside from Korea, Jack attained his private pilot’s license and worked at Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation in Schenectady, NY while attending Sienna college night classes.

Jack married Edna Castle of Wynantskill, NY in 1951. The couple moved to Miami where he attended the University of Miami on the GI Bill graduating with a BA in Business in 1955. However, prior to graduation, he seized the opportunity to enroll in flight school with the Florida Air National Guard (FANG). He pursued advance training at Webb AFB in Big Spring, TX and Luke AFB in Glendale, AZ flying F-84s.

Jack returned to Florida to serve with the FANG. In 1960, he was hired by Northeast Airlines, which was later acquired by Delta. Jack flew as an airline captain for 28 years while also serving in the New Hampshire Air National Guard(NHANG). He was affectionately known as “Zip” by his fellow NHANG comrades at Grenier Field in Manchester and later Pease Air Field in Greenland.

A veteran of three wars, Jack served during WWII, the Korean Conflict and was active duty for the Cold War and Vietnam. He served as a command pilot with more than 9,000 hours military flying time in 10 types of aircraft! In 1981, Jack was promoted to Brigadier General and in 1985 assigned as Mobilization Assistant to the 12th Air Force Commander, headquartered at Bergstrom AFB, Austin, TX.

Jack attended Air War College in 1976 and Defense Strategy Seminar in 1979. He also earned a master’s degree in public administration from Golden Gate University in 1979. He considered himself most fortunate that his vocation was his avocation. He was an avid float plane pilot and participated in many fly-ins. Great memories were made on annual float plane trips to a remote fishing camp in Northern Quebec with fishing buddies. Recognizing only Jack’s military and commercial flying time, he accumulated nearly 40,000 flight hours – truly a remarkable achievement.


Throughout his lifetime, Jack served on several boards of directors but was most proud of his role in establishing the NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen. He was a strong proponent of education and often told his children that their education was “something no one could ever take away from you.” Modeling this, he attended language school in Italy in his 70s!

Jack is survived by Edna, his loving wife of 65 years, and four children: Lynn Fawcett of Chester, NH, Gregory of Austin, TX, Shawn (married to Marcia Fanaras) of Weare, NH and Kimberly Pillsbury (married to Steven Pillsbury) of Oakhurst, NJ. His grandchildren are Tamara Fawcett Rhodes (Harrisburg, PA), Courtney Fawcett Joyner (Kernersville, NC), Rory Fawcett (Lowell, MA), Tanner Zito and Haley Zito (Weare, NH) and Samantha Pillsbury and Nicholas Pillsbury (Oakhurst, NJ). His first great-grandchild is expected in October.

Jack Zito believed he was most blessed to have so many good people touch his long life. He was a man dedicated to God, country, family and friends. He lived by his values, instilled them in his children and was gracious to all. He will be remembered for his gregarious personality.

Arrangements: Visiting hours will be at Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 290 Mammoth Rd., Londonderry on Thursday, Sept 8 from 5-8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Derry, NH on Friday, Sept 9 at 12:00pm. A private family burial with full military honors will follow at NH State Veterans Cemetery.

Word has reached us with the passing of retired Republic now Northwest pilot Captain Robert Hall Foster, age 92.  Captain Foster first joined West Coast Airlines 04-22-1957, made the various mergers and retired with Republic in 1982 as noted in his obituary below.  Captain Foster was widowed in March of 2007 with the passing of his wife Helen.  For those wishing to contact the family, perhaps the best way would be by email...their son Ron Foster can be reached at rhf1924@aol.com  A memorial service for Captain Foster will be held Saturday, September 17th at Edmonds United Methodist Church in Edmonds, Washington.  Phone: (425) 778-2119.

Captain Robert Hall Foster

March 21, 1924 – August 14, 2016

Robert was born in Portland, Oregon on March 21, 1924 to Robert and Magdalene Foster. As a teenager, he worked with his uncles in the construction trade, learning much about building and carpentry. His true love, however, was aviation. At the age of 12 he received his first ride in an airplane, an open cockpit biplane.  After that he was hooked.

In 1942, after graduating from Lincoln High School, Robert entered the Naval Aviation Cadet program and traveled to Bend, Oregon for flight training. It was there that he learned to fly in a Piper J3 Cub. He was then sent to Naval Flight School in Corpus Christi, Texas where he earned his wings. At the age of 19, he was in command of a PV-2 Harpoon patrol bomber based at Curacao in the South Caribbean, flying anti-submarine patrols while protecting the Panama Canal shipping lanes.

On August 16, 1944, while on leave in Chicago, Robert married the love of his life, Helen Ensor. They would make their first home in Beaufort, South Carolina. When the war was over, they would return to Portland where they would raise a family.

Robert went back to working in construction, but he still kept his hand in aviation, flying the P2-V Neptune and PB-4Y Privateer in the Naval Reserves. He was called back to active duty at the start of the Korean War. He was based at Okinawa, Japan, flying patrols in a P2-V Neptune in the South China Sea. After that war was over, he again went back to working construction, but what he really wanted to do was fly.

 In 1957 he was hired by West Coast Airlines, beginning a 25-year career as an airline pilot. Aircraft flown during his career were the DC-3, F-27 and DC-9. In 1960, he was transferred to Seattle, where the family would finally settle. Three company name changes (Air West, Hughes Air West, Republic) and mergers later, he would retire as a Captain for Republic Airlines in 1982.

After retirement, he stayed quite busy. He and Helen were very active in the First United Methodist Church of Seattle. With Helen’s love of music, they became members of the Seattle Opera Guild, traveling to Europe and touring many historic sites and homes of the old Grand Masters of Opera.

He bought a boat and christened it the Sitting Duck (the nickname of retired Republic Airlines pilots) and he enjoyed many fishing trips and “nice boat rides” (no fish) with his children and grandchildren.

Robert was a man of integrity who set an unwavering example of what the “Greatest Generation” was all about. Honor and respect and be true to your word. Work hard and take care of your family.

He was preceded in death by his son Richard and wife Helen. He leaves behind his son Gary (Ina) of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, daughter Janice of Oceanside, California, son Ronald (Kathy) of Mukilteo, Washington, and grandchildren Richard, Bryan and Stephanie.

A memorial service has been planned for Saturday, September 17^th at 2:00 at the Edmonds United Methodist Church – 828 Caspers St. Edmonds WA 98020. Phone: (425) 778-2119

Wife Helen's obituary............................Helen Caroline FOSTER (1925-2007)

It is with great sadness that the family of Helen Caroline Foster of Edmonds, WA announces her passing on Saturday, March 24, 2007 at the age of 81. Helen is survived by her husband of 62 years, Robert; sons, Gary (Ina), of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Ronald (Kathy) of Mukilteo WA, and daughter, Janice, of Oceanside, CA, and three grandchildren, Richard, Bryan, and Stephanie. She was preceded in death by her son, Richard. Helen was born in Portland, OR on April 27, 1925 to Herbert and Juanita Ensor. She was blessed with an exceptional singing voice, and had a passionate love and understanding of opera and classical music. As a young woman, she performed many times in plays and musicals in the Portland area where she was even offered her own radio program. She sang in many church choirs over the years and she especially enjoyed her time singing with the SnoKing Chorale, where she made many lasting friends who shared her love of vocal music. She was a long time member of the Seattle Opera Guild and enjoyed attending many operas with her husband, Robert. She was well traveled, having taken several trips to Europe where she was able to visit the graves and birthplaces of many of the great composers of the music she loved so much. Her life was her family, her music, and her pets, and she also leaves behind her special cat, Harry. We all will miss you, but we take comfort in knowing that you are at peace and free at last. A Memorial Service in Memory of Helen will be held on Thursday, March 29 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Seattle, 1013 Eighth Avenue, Seattle WA. In lieu of flowers, those who so desire may make memorial donations in memory of Helen Foster to Providence Hospice and Home Care of Snohomish County, 2731 Wetmore, Suite 500, Everett, WA 98201.

News has reached us with the passing of retired Delta pilot and flight instructor Captain Charles Edward Morrison, age 74.  Captain Morrison joined Delta Air Lines 04-03-1967 and retired with Delta in 1997, based ATL/030.  He is survived by his wife Rachel.

Charles Edward Morrison, Sr., age 74 of Powder Springs, GA passed away Tuesday, August 23, 2016. A Graveside Service will be held 2 pm Friday, August 26 at Cheatham Hill Memorial Park in Marietta with Dr. Richard Walker officiating.  A native of Lamar County, Alabama, Mr. Morrison graduated from Mississippi State University with honors. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Social Fraternity and a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership fraternity. He was a pilot for Delta Airlines for 30 years, retiring in 1997. After retiring, he devoted his time to traveling, woodworking, and spending time with family. He was a member of Macland Baptist Church.

Just got a phone call from retired DL Captain Richard Gruetter, that retired DL Captain Charles E. Morrison died last night.  They live across the street from each other. 
Charles was born 11/14/1941 and was hired by DL 4/3/1967, the class just after mine.  He and Richard had served in Delta's Training Department for several years.

Military veteran, WA/DL Capt. John V. 'Jack' Hogan Jr., age 73

May 23, 1943 ~ August 13, 2016

Our group has received news of a tragic accident involving retired WA/DL pilot Capt. Jack Hogan and his wife Gloria.  Evidently Jack suffered a cardiac event in which he blacked out while driving August 11th.  Jack had emergency surgery but to no avail and lost his life....he passed on the morning of August 13th.  Jack's wife Gloria remains hospitalized. 

Following his military service, Captain Hogan joined Western Airlines 04-09-1973 and retired with Delta Air Lines, based LAX/030.  He was 73 years of age at the time of his passing and is survived by his wife Gloria and their daughter Colleen.  A flyby in Jack's honor was given Sunday evening at Santa Paula Airport by the T-6 Condor Squadron out of Van Nuys, California.  We expect to hear more news later later on as to memorial services for Captain Hogan but for now the family is in trauma.   As we receive more information we will be sure to pass it along.

Subject: Fwd: Passing of WAL/DAL Captain Jack Hogan

August 11 Jack Hogan and his wife "G" were driving from Ventura, CA to Santa Paula when Jack had some sort of

caradic event. Jack blacked out and apparently crossed over and hit head on with another vehicle. All three people

were taken to County General. It was determined Jack needed emergency surgery and he was transfered to St.

Johns in Oxnard, a stint was inserted, Jack was put in ICU on life support. "G" was banged-up but is recovering. 

Saturday Jack had a brain scan and as a result was removed from ICU and taken off of life support. I'm sad to report

that today at approximately 09:45 Jack went West. I served with Jack in the Marine Corps and at Western and Delta

Airlines and can say he was one of the Best both, as a Marine, an aviator, a man and as a friend; he will be greatly

missed.

Please post the notice of his passing and I will keep you informed as to time and place of a service/memorial.

Notification with the passing of RNPA member retired Northwest pilot Captain William Wallace Halverson, age 90.  Captain Halverson joined Northwest in August 1950 and retired with Northwest in December 1985.  He is survived by his wife Frances.

Obituary...................William W. Halverson, 90, of Bayfield and Henderson, Nev., passed away, Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2016, in Bayfield. He was born Dec. 31, 1925, in Lyons, Neb., the son of Roscoe and Mary (Jacobs) Halverson.

 

 William's love for flying and airplanes began at an early age as he worked as a crop duster, which helped him pay for his future schooling. He attended and later graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of North Dakota – Grand Forks. Following his schooling he served as a Captain in the U.S Army Air Corps during WWII.

 

 William was united in marriage to Frances Hewitt on Sept. 5, 1948, in Grand Forks, N.D. They moved to St. Paul, Minn., and later Bloomington, Minn., while William worked as a pilot for Northwest Airlines. In 1985 he retired after over 30 years of commercial flying.

 

 Retirement was spent up north in Bayfield during the summer months, canoeing, camping, playing tennis and walking the brownstone trail with Frances. Winters were spent in Henderson, catching up with family and friends and enjoying the holidays together. William's favorite pastime and passion was rebuilding and restoring antique airplanes and he was a two-time national grand champion.

 

 He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Frances; two children, Lizabeth Halverson and Bob (Teresa) Halverson; a grandson, Garret Halverson; and nieces and nephews.    He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Dorthine.

 

 Graveside services will be held at a later date.  Arrangements are by Bratley Funeral Home of Washburn.
