Burriss, Donna "Marlene"

After a long and brave battle with COPD, Marlene Burriss died on February 10, 2018, at the age of 79. Marlene was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Virginia Lundberg, and her husband, David Burriss. During the glory days of the airline industry, Marlene and her many friends in the Northwest Airlines Pilots Wives Club organized extravagant events to raise funds for the Minnesota Heart Association. She also devoted her time to volunteering for the Mound Westonka School District. Marlene and David shared a passion for travel and were fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit all parts of the world during their 47 years together. Marlene is survived by her two sisters; Joan Kern of Marquette, KS, and Joyce (Larry) DaCosta of Seattle, WA; her son Rod (Cathy) Burriss, daughter Jenny (Steve) Semen-kewitz, beloved grandchildren Lisa (Chris) Mangefrida, Jackie and Brian Burriss; great-grandson, Caleb, and many life-long friends. Near the end of her life, Marlene said she didn't want those left behind to grieve. In her own words, she requested no tears, just cheers for the life she lived and loved. A funeral service will be held at Good Shepherd Church in Navarre; Friday, February 16, 2018; 3:00pm. Memorials preferred to the Good Shepherd Church Youth Ministry.

Death  :  12 Sep 2005

Capt. David Reed Burriss, 70, who retired in 1995 after 30 years of service as a commercial airline pilot for Northwest Airlines, died Monday at home.

Mr. Burriss, an Air Force veteran, was born in Steubenville, Ohio, and came here four months ago from Tennessee. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He enjoyed travel, cruises and flying.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Marlene; a son, Rod; a daughter, Jenny Semenkewitz; a brother, John; and two grandchildren. Lohman-Palm Coast, is in charge.

Notification with the passing of retired Western/Delta pilot Captain Kenneth Leslie Smith, age 77.  Captain Smith joined Western Airlines 08-29-1966 and retired with Delta Air Lines in 2000, based 031/Atlanta at the time of his retirement.  He is survived by his wife Noelle and their children.  Please see information below.

Obituary..............Kenneth Smith

Kenneth L. Smith, age 77, of Livingston, Texas died, Friday, February 9, 2018. There will be a Celebration of Life on April 21, 2018 at his home.

 

He was a native of Halfway, Texas. Mr. Smith was a retired airline pilot for Western and Delta Airlines. He was a member of the EAA, AOPA, and the Burning Man FAST Team.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of thirty-six years; Noelle Smith; son, Ronnie Smith (Tammy) and family; daughters, Marleyne Smith and Amber Smith; and brother, Neilan Smith.

Notification with the passing of Northwest/Delta Air Lines pilot F/O William ‘Bill’ John Rempe, age 55.  Per obituary notice, “Bill earned his pilot's license in 1985 and first worked for East Hampton Air in Long Island, then Business Express where he became Captain. Bill then worked for Northwest Airline (NWA hire date 04-19-1996, based NYC....CF) which later became Delta Airlines. At the time of Bill's passing he was a 1st Officer for Delta Airlines.”

William John Rempe, 55, of East Hampton, beloved husband of Jodi (Pandisher) Rempe died Wednesday February 14th at Hartford Hospital. Born Nov. 30, 1962 in Greenport, L.I. he was the son of Stacia (Januick) Rempe and the late John E. Rempe. Bill grew up in Long Island and was a graduate of Greenport High School and then Florida Institute of Technology where he trained to become an Airline Pilot. Bill earned his pilot's license in 1985 and first worked for East Hampton Air in Long Island, then Business Express where he became Captain. Bill then worked for Northwest Airline which later became Delta Airlines. At the time of Bill's passing he was a 1st Officer for Delta Airlines. Bill loved music and guitar playing, Cuban Cigars, traveling the world, entertaining family and friends and sharing his chicken wings. Bill was always the life of the party and would light up a room. Bill is survived by his mother Stacia Rempe of Greenport L.I., his wife Jodi Rempe of East Hampton, his two sons John Rempe of Los Angeles, Luke Rempe of East Hampton, a sister Lori Dibble and fiancé Michael Crosby of NY, his niece and God daughter Michele Dell Croce (John), sisters-in-law Geri Lynne Carnelli (Raymond), Gina Scelza, GiGi Fox (Bill), Jacki Baranowski (Peter), nieces and nephews Jeremiah (Dana), Jordan Marie, Jacob, Blaire, Hailey, and great nephew Austin. He was predeceased by his father John and his infant son Scott. A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Monday Feb. 19th at 10:30 AM in St. Patrick Church East Hampton. Word has reached our group with the passing of Delta Golden Wings member retired C&S/Delta pilot Captain Vernon C Whitman, age 93.  Captain Whitman first joined Chicago & Southern 04-19-1951 (adjusted date? 05-15-1951) and retired with Delta Air Lines in 1984, based Atlanta. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, their children and granddaughters, and one great granddaughter.

James Marvin "Sonny" Freeman, 76, Bixby, Oklahoma, passed away February 10th at Clarehouse Community Home for the Dying in Tulsa Oklahoma.

 

He grew up in Henderson County and later joined the Army, where he was a Medic and Surgery Assistant. After serving in the Army, he became a pilot and flew for Delta Airlines for many years until the tragic hijacking at Dallas-Ft. Worth in 1974, where he lost a best friend and co-worker. After becoming disabled from flying, he went into the computer programming business where he wrote programs for large industries, including Delta. He remained in the computer business until he became disabled due to Parkinson 's disease.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents Marvin and Marie Freeman, grandparents, and his nephew Tommy Nelson.

 

He is survived by his sister, Helen "Sissy" Freeman Nelson of Henderson. He is also survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty; children Lisa Simpson (Donnie) of Harrisburg, Il; Cindy Merrill (Lance) , Jeff Freeman (Michelle) and Phillip Freeman (Adrienne) of Bixby Oklahoma, 7 grandchildren, nieces Diana Jackson and Amy Coney of Henderson, and other nieces, nephews and cousins.

A time of visitation and remembrance will be held at Bellfield Baptist Church, Thursday Feb 15th from 6-8pm.

Hijacking incident....................  death of DL pilot F/O Fred D. Jones,  Feb. 22, 1974

United States February 22, 1974: Samuel Byck shot and killed Maryland Aviation Administration Police Officer George Neal Ramsburg before storming Delta Air Lines Flight 523 to Atlanta. When informed by pilots Reese (Doug) Loftin and Fred Jones they could not take off until wheel blocks were removed, he shot them both and grabbed a nearby passenger, ordering her to "fly the plane." Jones died as he was being removed from the aircraft after the event was concluded; Byck was mortally wounded when Charles Troyer, an Anne Arundel County police officer on the jetway, stormed the plane and fired four shots through the aircraft door at with a .357 Magnum revolver taken from the deceased Ramsburg. Two of the shots penetrated the thick window of the aircraft door and wounded Byck. Before the police could gain entry to the aircraft, Byck committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. Bycks motive was to hijack the aircraft and crash it into the White House, in an assassination attempt on President Richard Nixon.
