Received this notification today, news with the passing of retired Pan Am/Delta pilot F/O Louis ‘Lou’ Matthew Fielack Jr., age 82, of Mammoth Spring, Arkansas.  Lou joined Pan American 08-21-1967 and retired with Delta Air Lines in 1996.  Widowed in 2002, Lou is survived by his children and grandchildren.  Please see obituary information below.

Louis Matthew Fielack Jr., 82, of Mammoth Spring, Arkansas, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2019. He was born on August 7, 1936 in New York, the only son to his adoring parents, Louis Matthew and Kathleen (Mighton) Fielack, who preceded him in death.

After graduating from De La Salle Institute and Rutgers University, Louis joined the United States Air Force and served his country from 1959 to 1967 reaching the rank of Captain and flew KC-97’s and KC-135’s with the Strategic Air Command, completing his military career with the 924th Air Refueling Squadron at Castle AFB, California.

Louis retired from flying in 1996 after 29 years of commercial aviation experience. He was a pilot at Pan American World Airways, Delta Airlines and also the Dubai Royal Air Wing. During the course of his career, he piloted B-707’s, B-727’s and A310 aircraft. His time in Berlin flying with Pan Am (IGS) was by far his favorite. After retirement, he enjoyed life in Satellite Beach, FL with his loving wife, Maryann (Claire) Fielack who preceded him in death in 2002. After a fly-fishing trip to Arkansas where he fell in love with the Ozarks, he moved to Mammoth Spring, AR.

Lou was a member of ALPA, American Legion, VFW, NRA and other organizations and was a generous donor of time and money to many charities. His passions included his bird dog “Jake” and cat “Sam”, flying, classic cars, motorcycles, classical and ragtime music, travel and camping. He was honest, quick witted, independent and loved his country.

Survivors include his children: Louis M. Fielack III and his wife Terry, Debra Venuti and her husband Louis, Raymond Fielack and his wife Vonnie, Robert Fielack and his wife Zarina Mak, and Matthew Fielack.

He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Anthony Vergara, Michelle Gloria, Brian Gloria, Jennifer Venuti, Louis Venuti Jr., Ross Taylor, Andrew Fielack, and Liam Fielack; two great-grandchildren, Keaton Taylor and Cordry Taylor and ;), his first wife, Marilyn Moore whom he cherished and her husband Ned; and many other relatives and good friends.

Memorial services will be at a later date in New York.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Lou’s favorite charity, the Arkansas Sheriffs Youth Ranch, 100 St. Vincent Place, Batesville, AR 72501.

Word has reached our group with the passing of Delta Golden Wings member retired Delta pilot Captain John Joel Pilger, USAF ret., age 84.  Captain Pilger joined Delta Air Lines 12-17-1962 and retired with Delta in 1994, based 030/ATL.  He is survived by his wife Abigail.

Capt. John Joel Pilger, USAF, Ret. age 84, a 47-year resident of Dunwoody and Naples, Fla., was reported missing and presumed dead on Jan. 20, 2019, when authorities say he commandeered a retired Boeing 767 aircraft which went missing approximately 750 miles north of the Arctic Circle.

 

Atlanta police confirm Pilger was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. Hospice spokeswoman Charlotte Croxton says she reached the Pilger residence late Saturday night and found the garage open with a vehicle missing. At 1:07 a.m., security footage at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport recorded Pilger presenting high level security clearance credentials then entering a facility believed to be operated by the CIA.

 

"The 767 disappeared from radar north of Thule Air Base in Greenland just a few hundred miles from the north pole," said government spokesman Bill Eason in a press conference. "He was last seen flying full speed toward Russian airspace. I can neither confirm nor deny any further details."

 

Pilger's exact whereabouts are not the only mystery. Since the incident, friends and family have come forth offering conflicting explanations.

 

His daughter, Susan Polomsky shocked relatives with a revelation. "Everyone knew him as a mild-mannered man devoted to family and country. But from an early age, I knew dad was much more than just a Delta pilot."

 

Pilger's friends, Bill Fisher and Garry Bock of Naples responded with confusion. "We and John were all very active in the stock market. The John we knew was a high-powered Wall Street day trader, not a pilot."

 

Meanwhile, Don Pilger of St. Paul, Minn., claimed his brother was a back room campaign strategist. "The Reagan 1980 landslide? Behind the scenes, that was all John."

 

The explanations keep coming. Grandchildren Jonathon Eck and Julia Eck, students at Medical College of Georgia were certain Pilger was an accomplished historian writing under the nom de plume John Goldwater while granddaughter Emma Pilger claims he was moonlighting regularly as a Dick Clark stand-in for a soon to be released retrospective on Netflix.

 

Police say the people who knew Pilger that have come forward are providing contradictory information. "We are looking for a connection between Mr. Pilger's background in the US Air Force, what we believed was his 32-year tenure as a pilot for Delta, his political activity, his little-known activity in the stock markets, and his propensity for global travel," said one investigator.

 

Pilger’s son, Joel Pilger offered a surprising yet unsubstantiated account. “It’s now safe to let everyone know that dad never actually stopped working for Operation Blue Jay with the Air Force. The piloting for Delta, the politics, the trading, the travel, the moonlighting… it was all a sophisticated cover which enabled him to serve both his family and his country which he loved so dearly.”

 

The many conflicting reports may make it impossible to pinpoint Pilger’s exact location.

 

The only person who might be able to answer the question ‘Who is the real John Pilger?’ is his wife and constant companion of 55 years, Abigail Pilger. Detectives say they’ve been unable to interview Mrs. Pilger, however neighbors say they witnessed her leaving the couple’s home wearing dark sunglasses and a large hat.

 

Granddaughter Olivia Eck responded coyly, “She said something about heading to Naples,” but investigators have been unable to determine if she was referring to Florida or Italy.

 

All of the above is but one version attempting to explain actual events.

 

The other version of events is that John never left home and died peacefully surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren as they all together celebrated a life well-lived and wished him a safe flight.

    John died this morning at 5 am at home in the presence of our children. We have all the family staying here. John will be cremated and likely a memorial much later this spring when both our son and daughter plus all the grandchildren can attend.

 

      I’ll share more information later but when you share this with our Delta family, please let them know that John was so blessed to have their camaraderie and constant good wishes.  It was wonderful for him to attend the DGW Christmas dinner on December 9 and see so many dear friends.

Obituary...................Don E. 'Pete' Clark, 91

Captain Don E. "Pete" Clark passed away in his sleep on Jan. 14, 2019.

 

Don wanted to fly since his first airplane ride and lesson in a Piper Cub while in Great Falls before he turned 21. He washed the aircraft to earn his first ride and after that was only out of the air to sleep and be with his family until mandatory retirement at age 60.

 

He graduated from the University of San Francisco and attained the position of chief check pilot, retiring from American Airlines in 1988 after many years flying with Air Cal based out of Orange County (John Wayne) Airport, also TWA, Air America, Capital and Northwest Airlines.

 

A dedicated husband and father of three, he then turned his attention from his grown family to breeding and training Arabian horses for track and show, which won many awards in the U.S. and Canada for speed and conformation.

 

Don was the last of the Clark children born to Don Richard and Nellie Amanda Clark, being born in Yellow Bay in the cabin (bad blizzard in 1928) on the lower 60 of the Clark Homestead. His heart was never far from the Flathead Valley, spending summers in his home on the Beardance Homestead, which he built from the ground up.

 

He was proud to serve his country, having joined the (Army Transportation Corps) Merchant Marines in 1944 at the age of 16 after his brother Dick was shot down in a B-24 over France.

 

He was preceded in death by his lovely bride Leona, and brothers Fredrich, Richard B. and Verne F. Clark, and sisters Effie (Dockstader), Margaret (Ratchford) and Wanda Fae (Baillie).

 

He is survived by his sons Randy and Rick, and daughter Cherie (Miller). Uncle Pete was known to his nieces and nephews to be kind and generous and always ready with a story, having traveled many times around the world as a pilot or his second love as an Arabian horse breeder, trainer and judge. Family and friends bid him a warm goodbye as he rides off into the sunset on his beloved Khashm to be with his heavenly family. We will miss you Dad.

 

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at the new VFW Hall in Bigfork.

Mr. Jerry Luther Hall, age 78, of Covington, GA passed away Sunday, January 20, 2019.  He was born August 5, 1940 in Floyd County, Kentucky to John Graham Hall and Hester Hall, who have preceded him in death.  Mr. Hall was a retired Delta Airlines pilot after a 30-year career.  Mr. Hall will be remembered for his love of both flying and the Kentucky Wildcats, and for his generosity of spirit.

Mr. Hall is survived by his daughter, Deborah Dawn (Brant) Gardner, his son, Dr. John David Hall, his three grandsons, Graham Hall (Alyse) Gardner, Griffin Owen (Madison) Gardner, and Grayson Hunt Gardner, and his sister, Rosa Mary Hall. Mr. Hall was also preceded in death by his brother, David Morgan Hall and his sister, Elizabeth Caroline Hamilton.

A gathering of friends and family will be held Saturday, February 2, 2019 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at J.C. Harwell and Son Funeral Home in Covington, GA.  There will also be a visitation and funeral service held in Kentucky at Hall Funeral Home in Martin, Kentucky on February 8, 2019.  J.C. Word has reached our group with the passing of retired Delta pilot Captain Jerry Luther Hall, age 78.  Captain Hall joined Delta Air Lines 02-08-1965 and was based ATL/031. 

Captain Hall’s son John writes:  “Hello, this is Jerry's son, John Hall. I have the unfortunate responsibility of telling everyone that my Father passed away this past Sunday, 1/20/19, due to what appears to be a sudden heart attack. Fortunately it appears that he did not suffer at all. A viewing and a gathering of friends and family will be held on 2/2/19 from 4-6pm at JC Harwell and Son Funeral Home in Covington GA for his friends and family in the Atlanta/Conyers/Covington area. A week later, a viewing will be held from 5-7pm with a service from 7-8pm on 2/8/19 at Hall Funeral Home in Martin KY for his friends and family in the KY area. His burial will be on Saturday 2/9/19 at Davidson Memorial Garden Cemetery at 11am. For those attending the burial, we will be leaving from at the funeral home at 10:30am. Again, I hate being the bearer of bad news for all those who knew and loved my father. Thanks and I wish all peace, John”

Joel “Joe” Aaron Horwitz, age 63 of Loganville, GA; passed away on Wednesday, November 14th, 2018.   He is survived by his wife, Michele McClure Horwitz, and their children Joel, Mia, Skyla and Eli, and by children Jessica Lily Jenkins married to Daniel Jenkins and granddaughter Camille, and Vicki Horwitz married to Daniel Booth, sisters Ellen Darr married to the late David Darr and niece Melanie Bachrach married to David Bachrach and nephew Jonathan Darr married to Nyana Singh Darr, and Barbara Grad Allen married to Peter Allen and nephew Sam Allen. He was the son of the late Ruth and Rubin Horwitz of Chicago, IL.

 

Joe was a Captain at Delta Air Lines, where he worked from 1988 - 2018.  He flew on the 727, DC-9, MD-88, 757 and 767-ER, and was Captain on the MD-88, 757 and 767-ER.   He served in the United States Air Force for 8 years.  While in the Air Force, he was an aircraft commander of the nation’s primary strategic bomber, the B-52G, where he supervised a combat crew of five experts tasked with worldwide, all-weather, nuclear/ conventional strike missions critical to national security.  He was responsible for maintaining the highest state of readiness by planning and executing aerial refueling, low altitude tactics, and nuclear/ conventional weapons delivery and defensive actions. Graduating first in his class, he was a distinguished graduate in Officer’s school and was honorably discharged as a Captain in 1988. He held Master of Mechanical Engineering and Bachelor of Science degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign.  Upon graduating, he was invited to Berkeley to read his thesis on Thermodynamics. He held several mechanical engineering patents.

 

A skilled craftsperson, he was excellent in woodworking and built a gazebo in his backyard, a series of precise WWII plane replicas and beautiful pine furniture.  Always on the go, his love for flight extended to motorcycles and to travel with his family over the years. His interest in engineering never stopped and he worked on his cars throughout his life.  As an adult, he loved to play the guitar, and as a child he played the trumpet.

 

He was an avid athlete who liked being outdoors and loved running and hiking, and he shared his love for the outdoors with his children.  Growing up, he played ice hockey in Chicago outdoors at Terminal Park in his neighborhood and with the Niles North High School team indoors, and continued to play on local teams as an adult. 

 

Joe had wry sense of humor and he liked to have fun - he liked travel and adventure, adrenaline rushes and fighter jets.  He was engaged in life and lived life to the fullest. He was taken from us too soon.

 

A Celebration of Life service for Joe will be at the Georgia National Cemetery at 5580 Knox Bridge Hwy., Canton, GA 30114 on Tuesday, November 20th at 1:30 pm.
