Obituary............Stephen L. Carey

Our beloved father, grandfather, son and brother, Captain Stephen L. Carey age 57, passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 in Salt Lake City Utah.

Stephen is preceded in death by his father Neal Carey. He is survived by his children Craig and Erica, his granddaughter Amelia, his mother Norma (née Kirk), and his sisters Cheryl and Sandra, as well as his extended family.

He was a generous loving man, who will be missed not only by his family but by his many friends and associates. He served his country with honor as an officer and aviator in the United States Marine Corps. He had a fulfilling career with Delta Airlines and served as a leader and mentor to others during his tenure.

Stephen embraced life through aviation and world travel. He loved the thrills and excitement of acceleration and found great pleasure in skiing, running, fast cars and motorcycles. He enjoyed many hobbies over his lifetime. His joyous smile will always remain in the memories of those who knew him.

Services will be held on Friday, June 21, 2019 at 11:00 am at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 S 900 E, Salt Lake City. Guests are encouraged to use the complimentary valet parking on the north side of the building. Stephen will be laid to rest following the service where there will be a Marine Honor Guard Ceremony at the Utah Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 17111 S Camp Williams Rd, Bluffdale UT, 84065.

Obituary....................

Michael William Wolber, a retired aviator and devout Catholic, passed from this earthly life on Saturday, June 1, 2019, at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. He was surrounded by his beloved wife and family, who together humbly entrusted him into the hands of our Lord and His Blessed Mother.

Mike was born on June 6, 1952 in Salinas, California. During his childhood years, he moved with his family to Alaska and then to Indonesia. In 1966, when his family moved to Libya, Mike moved back to the States to attend boarding school at Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose, California. After graduating from Bellarmine in 1970, Mike attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he was a member of the Air Force ROTC. He graduated in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science in Forestry.

He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force (USAF) in January 1976 and graduated from pilot training in 1977. During his 14+ years in the Air Force, Mike flew many planes, including the T-33 T-Bird, F-106 Delta Dart, T-38 Talon and the F-15 Eagle. He was stationed in and deployed to many parts of the world, proudly serving his country, and was honorably discharged in June 1990.

Following his service in the USAF, he and his family moved to the Dallas-Ft. Worth (DFW) metroplex where he began flying for Delta Air Lines. In his 27 years with the airlines, he was based in DFW from 1990 to 2007, and Atlanta from 2007 until his retirement in June 2017.

Mike loved life and lived it to the fullest, going from team roping in his younger years to backpacking with his sons Garth, Kurt and Pete in the Sierras and the Rockies. He was a Boy Scout leader, baseball coach, Little League umpire, docent at the Japanese Botanical Gardens in Ft. Worth, and a member of the American Legion Post 82 in Ellijay, GA. Other hobbies included model railroading, competition shooting, and especially riding Harleys and traveling with the love of his life, his bride and best friend, Denise of 40 years.

But all throughout his life, his faith in and devotion to God was of utmost importance to him and to who he was. He was very active in the church (Our Lady of the Mountains in Jasper, GA) where he volunteered with the St. Vincent de Paul society and served on the Parish Council. His strong and enduring faith was the greatest gift he bestowed upon his family.

Mike was predeceased by his father, B.W. “Pete” Wolber, and his sister, Susan Martin who passed away in July 2018. He is survived by his devoted wife, Denise; three sons and daughters-in-law Garth Wolber (Kristy) of Colleyville, TX, Kurt Wolber (Katie) of Dallas, TX, and Peter Wolber (Noelle) of Ramstein AB, Germany; loving mother, Madilyn Wolber of Salinas, CA; granddaughters Rylee, Reagan and Reese Wolber; grandson Garrett Wolber; sister, Brenda Wolber of Carmel, CA; many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his most trusted, loyal friend, Lawrence J. O’Neill.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 11 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Dallas, TX (Rosary at 11:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m.). He will be interred with military honors at 2:00 p.m. at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. There will also be a visitation on Monday, June 10th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Sparkman-Crane Funeral Home in Dallas, TX.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation.

Tom Goldt, 78, of Danville, CA, passed away on June 1 from complications of Parkinson's disease. He was born and raised in Alameda, CA by Roy and Kathleen Goldt. 
Tom attended St. Mary's University and eventually graduated from St. Louis University earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering. 
Tom is survived by his wife Marin and their children Steve and Cristina Goldt, Lara and Steve Dutto, Kourtney and Curtis Cunningham, Jeff and Mimi King, and Craig and Emily King. He is also survived by his 12 grandkids Justin, Madeline, Nicholas, Tyler, Genet, Connor, Molly, Chase, Ryder, Brighton, Mackenzie and Sally.
Tom had a passion for flying that started when he was growing up with his brother Roy near Alameda Naval Air Station and Oakland Airport. He completed two tours of duty in Vietnam flying F4 Phantoms off the USS Enterprise. After retiring from the Navy, he flew for Western Airlines and eventually for Delta Airlines. He retired in 2000 and became a full time Grandpa. 
His faith was a big part of his life. For decades, he was a parishioner of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in San Ramon, CA. As a member of that community, he treasured the friendships and always looked forward to being with the Sunday Donut Group.
He loved his large family. His favorite times included vacations to Hawaii and the Sierras. He played Santa Claus for 18 annual Christmas breakfasts. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching his grandkids athletic endeavors. Many a referee and coach received well intentioned, yet unsolicited free advice from Tom. 
Tom will be remembered as a kind man with a sweet smile and humble demeanor. He was a beloved husband, father, grandpa and friend. We love you Tom!
Services: Memorial Mass – St. Joan of Arc, 2601 San Ramon Valley Blvd., San Ramon, CA Friday June 28 at 11 AM.

News has reached us with the passing of retired Western/Delta pilot Captain Thomas ‘Tom’ Goldt, age 78.  Captain Goldt joined Western Airlines 03-03-1969 and retired with Delta Air Lines.

Rita Kwan Akelis

Born in Hong Kong May 31, 1934.

Died June 2, 2019 In Burlingame, of heart failure.

Rita graduated Mary Knoll Catholic High, Kowloon, and attended nursing college in London. She returned to Hong Kong and became a Flight Attendant for Cathay Pacific Airways. Later, she was recruited by an American carrier, TransOcean Airlines, for her fluency in Chinese dialects. When TransOcean Airlines ceased operations, she was hired to continue her career by United States Overseas Airlines.

 

Rita met her future husband, a pilot, Captain Anthony Akelis of Delta Air Lines, who at that time was a Flight Engineer for United States Overseas Airlines. While flying the Pacific, Rita dated Tony. They married in Hong Kong in 1962 at a Catholic church.

 

She was a very talented designer and artisan, making flower arrangements and custom-stitched quilts, handbags, jewelry boxes, decorative ornaments, and other fabric creations, including knitting one-of-a-kind scarves. All her handmade items were sold at a co-op store in Palo Alto, CA. Her skills first started as a hobby and later became a full-fledged business.

 

She also had a green thumb, growing many flowers and plants at home herself, which she then included in her fabric projects.

 

Rita enjoyed walking, hiking, skiing, and attending outdoor and indoor events. She volunteered at Strybing Arboretum in San Francisco as a docent, and served as host at various flower and plant parks in the San Francisco area.

 

Rita raised two children, daughter Aline, who became a court reporter, and son Vincent, who became an airline pilot, almost on her own as Tony was away half of the time flying for the airlines.

 

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Tony; her two children; her sister, Norma; her brother, Man Woo.

Notification with the passing of retired Delta pilot Captain Jack W. Shinn, who passed on his birth day at the age of 69.  Captain Shinn joined Delta Air Lines 11-02-1979.  He is survived by his wife Mary and their children plus many close friends and aviation colleagues.

Obituary........

Our beloved husband, father and friend, Jack Shinn, passed away peacefully in his Park City home on Thursday, May 30th, his 69th birthday, after battling lung cancer for the last year. Jack was surrounded by his wife, Mary, son, Ty, daughter, Alyson and son-in-law, Dave.

Jack grew up in Walnut Creek, California with 6 brothers and sisters. He attended San Diego State University where he made many lifelong friends. Upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Airforce and spent 7 years as a pilot, serving his country and traveling the world. His natural aptitude for leadership led to an early promotion to Captain, making him the youngest Captain in the U.S. Airforce. Jack eventually pursued a career as a commercial pilot, spending over 25 years with Delta Airlines. There he met Mary and the two had an instant connection. Jack often told Mary that his life was great from the day he met her. They married in 1985 and started a family in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, welcoming their daughter, Alyson, in 1986.

The family moved to Park City in 1988 where Ty was born a year later. Jack's adventurous, fun-loving and active spirit found harmony with the mountain lifestyle of Park City. He was an avid skier, golfer, cyclist, sailor, wine enthusiast and all-around explorer. He said that salt-water, sunshine and fresh air were some of nature's best medicines. He had a deep affection for animals and gratitude for nature. You would often see him riding in a golf cart with the family dog, Gustavo, or in the lawn, inspecting flower beds and sprinkler heads.

Jack's love of learning was evident in his knack for picking up new hobbies and sports. His family teased that he was the only consumer that read the full instruction manual for anything he purchased. His keen ability to listen and understand people, coupled with his wealth of knowledge, made him an excellent teacher. He helped teach fellow pilots the art and science of flying in both the Airforce and at Delta. He loved mentoring and sharing his worldly wisdom with young people and helping friends and neighbors with their projects. He truly cared for others and took pride in helping them realize their greater ambitions. As a natural story-teller, he had a gift for joining wisdom and humor into a single sentence. Despite his fight with lung cancer, he demonstrated strength and willpower, even heli-skiing in Canada while receiving treatment. His composure was admirable, and his strength of character was paramount.

Jack, his big personality, contagious laugh and affectionate heart will be missed dearly by his family and friends.
