Thank you to Mrs. Helen Rogers for sending us the sad news of the death of her husband retired Delta Air Lines Captain James C. James "Jim" Charles Rogers

AUGUST 20, 1936 – AUGUST 2, 2020

James Charles Rogers of Apex, North Carolina slipped these surly bonds of earth on August 2, 2020. Jim was born in Tabor City, North Carolina on August 20, 1936, son of James Samuel and  Inez Harrelson Rogers. As a boy, he dreamed of flying airplanes and, while still in college, he fulfilled that dream. As a Captain in the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command during the Vietnam and Cold Wars and over a thirty-year career at Delta Air Lines, he sailed the skies, his home away from home.

Jim earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from North Carolina State University and was bemused when his four children all became Tar Heel fans. He was a lifelong avid reader, racing through anything he could get his hands on, yet he had a fondness for books about aviation, the wild west, and the American Civil War. He was a freethinker with a wry sense of humor, and he had an uncanny ability to recall facts about a wide breadth of subjects.

In his later years, even as his health declined, he remained cheerful. He shared that cheer with his grandchildren, who were his devotion for the past 30 years.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Helen Pratt Rogers; siblings Anna Rogers, Carole Rogers Hedrick, and Graham (Sandy) Rogers; children, James R. Rogers and wife Catherine, Jonathan Rogers, Stephen Rogers, and Elizabeth Ratledge and husband Brian; and grandchildren Jami, Jessica, Abby, Lucy, John Brian, Jimmy, Charlie, and Bethany.

Notification with the passing of retired Northeast/Delta pilot Captain Edward Richard "Ed" Moore, age 86.  Captain Moore joined Northeast Airlines 10-04-1965 and retired with Delta Air Lines in 1994, based 031/ATL.  He is survived by his wife Barbara, his children and his grandchildren plus many dear extended family members.

Obituary………………….Edward "Ed" Richard Moore, 86, of West Mystic, passed away peacefully Aug. 5, 2020, after a valiant battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was born in Manhattan, N.Y. May 17, 1934, to John and Rose Moore.

Ed grew up in Maspeth, N.Y., the eldest of five siblings in a close-knit Irish family. His family spent summers at their cottage in Rocky Point, a simple time filled with happy memories. In his youth, he played football, loved to water ski and worked as a lifeguard at Rockaway Beach in Queens. He graduated from Grover Cleveland High School; and attended Queens College, managing paper boys at Newsday to save money for flying lessons at Flushing Airport. Aviation was Ed's passion from a young age. He began his career managing the airport in Montauk, N.Y. and in 1964, became a commercial pilot with Northeast Airlines out of New York, which later became part of Delta Air Lines. He piloted both domestic and international flights over the course of his 30 years of flying commercially.

After retiring from Delta in 1994, Ed purchased the Action Multi Flight Training out of Groton-New London Airport. Throughout his life, he owned several different airplanes, including a Piper Cub and a 1929 Fleet biplane, which he personally restored. When it came time for true retirement, he shifted his focus to restoring a 1943 Howard DGA, his pride and joy. He and his wife, Barbara, flew "Howard" all over the country, attending air shows and gatherings of the Howard Club, for which he served as president for many years. To Ed's delight, his son shared his love of flying and followed in his footsteps to pursue a career in aviation. He also mentored and encouraged many other young aviation enthusiasts, providing his support to ensure their successful start in the industry he loved.

When not flying, Ed savored his time at home on Beebe Cove in Mystic. He loved hosting family gatherings on the deck, watching his children and grandchildren waterski and tube in the cove and enjoying the view with a glass or two of wine. His winter home was a fly-in community in Port Orange, Fla., with his Howard close by, so he and Barbara could take off on a whim.

Ed is survived by his wife of 40 years, Barbara L. Moore (Stasiewicz) of West Mystic; his children and their spouses: Debra and Stephen Kalkowski of Southington, Lisa Ackley of Groton and Edward and Jennifer Moore of Canton; his grandchildren, Ryan and Samidha Kalkowski, Aaron Kalkowski, Tyler Ackley, Cameron Ackley, Hannah Moore and Evan Moore; and his only great-grandchild, Miles Edward Kalkowski. Ed is also survived by his siblings and spouses: Luke and Donna Moore, Miriam and Ronald Duswalt and Brendan Moore. He is predeceased by his brother, John; and his son-in-law Alan Ackley. Ed had many nieces and nephews, including Cathy Hoppe, who lived with him and Barbara while attending college. He also cherished his aviation friends far and wide.

A memorial celebration of Edward Moore's life will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, in an outdoor tent at Spicer Park in Noank. Obituary…………………. Herbert "Dusty" W. Rhode

Herbert "Dusty" W. Rhode, 93, of Dade City, FL peacefully passed away on July 23, 2020. He was born in Charleston, SC on May 20, 1927 to Wilbur Rhode and Mabel Ackerman. Herbert was married to Wilma Mooy on November 23, 1967 and they were married for over 52 years.

Herbert joined the Navy in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1946. The Navy was the beginning of his career in aviation as an aircraft machinist. He went on to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University which launched his career in 1949 as a Flight Engineer. Dusty had a distinguished flying career spanning 39 years and over 35,000 flying hours with National Airlines and Pan American Airways.

Dusty enjoyed sailing, auto racing, air shows and spending time in their cabin in Blue Ridge, Georgia. He also enjoyed contributing to the Salvation Army.

Dusty is survived by three children, Gary J. Rhode, Kimberly R. Freeman, Todd D. Rhode and four grandchildren, Lydia B. Morrow, Lockwood M. Freeman, Douglas R. Freeman and Kyle D. Rhode. Dusty was predeceased by his wife Wilma M. Rhode in April of this year.

Dusty was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be dearly missed, loved and respected by all. His journey through this life was remarkable.
