Obituary:  Thomas Robert Cherry

Thomas Robert Cherry, 53, passed away on December 2, 2020 after a long battle against esophageal cancer.

 

Tom led a full life with a broad spectrum of interests. He was a camera assistant, pilot, flight Instructor, and font of esoteric knowledge.

 

His passion for cameras and photography led him to a career in film. He was a camera assistant in IATSE Local 600. He worked on numerous movies, television shows, and commercials.

Tom loved flying. He was a commercial pilot and also enjoyed flying his own Grumman Tiger. He shared his knowledge and expertise with others as a flight instructor for Delta Airlines.

 

Tom was born in Columbus, Ohio to L. JoAnn (Edwards) Cherry and the late Robert H. Cherry, Jr. He attended Columbus Alternative High School. He received a Bachelor of Science in Medical Communications from The Ohio State University and a Master's in TV, Radio, and Film from Syracuse University. He later returned to Ohio State, where he earned a Master's in Architectural Studies.

 

Tom is survived by his wife of 28 years, Susan Reed, his mother JoAnn Cherry, and an extensive network of friends across the country.

 

There will be gathering to celebrate Tom's life when the pandemic ends and allows us to all gather safely.

News has reached our group with the passing of retired Northwest pilot Captain John Benjamin Schricker, age 94.  RNPA/Retired Northwest pilot friends have shared this memory:  “NWA pilot John (Jack) Schricker, age 94, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, November 19, 2020. A former Navy SeaBee, Jack joined the pilot ranks through the flight engineer/NWA mechanic career track. He was hired by NWA on April 08, 1948 and served NWA for 33 years…..With condolences to the family.”

Schricker, John "Jack" age 94 passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 19. An amazing husband to Jolene (Klober), father to John (Keri) Schricker and Jayme (Bob) Simon and grandfather to Seth and Taryn, Clare, Joe and John. Jack grew up in Spooner, Wisconsin, enlisted in the Navy his senior year of high school, was in the 301st CB's, became a mechanic and eventually a pilot for Northwest Airlines for 33 years while living in Prior Lake. He gave unconditional love and support and will always be cherished in our hearts. In lieu of a service we ask that you look up to the sky next time you see a plane & think of him.

NWA Pilot John (Jack) Schricker, age 94, died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday November 19, 2020 at Trail of Orono Senior Residence in Orono, Minnesota. Jack was born February 4, 1926 in Spooner, WI., the son of John and Nora Schricker. Jack had five siblings, two who died at an early age.

   Jack attended Spooner High School and as early as he could afford a model airplane kit at Ben Franklin, he would buy and build one. He did not participate in many school sports or teams, as right after the Great Depression working took precedence. One Jack’s growing up memories was when his father took him to a Shell Lake County Fair and brought Jack a barnstormer fare to fly with Charles Lindbergh.

   In 1944, now a senior in high school Jack and 3 buddies skipped a day of school and took the train to Superior, WI to enlist in the Navy. Jacked served with the famed 301st Naval Construction Battalion in the western Pacific from April 1944 to December 1945. This Battalion built essential base facilities such as harbors, destroying mines and obstructions to harbors, constructing airfield and port facilities, often under combat fire conditions. The names of the Pacific WWII battle locations where the 301st served are iconic: Peleliu, Guam Tinian, Saipan, Iwo Jima.

   After the World War Two, Jack used his GI Bill entitlements to attend Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, OK where he earned his mechanic and airplane pilot licenses. Northwest Airlines hired Jack as a mechanic apprentice on April 08, 1948. He was initially assigned to the hanger shops at the ‘old’ main base at St. Paul’s Holman Field. Jack excelled in his mechanic career prior to becoming a pilot, he qualified as Crew Chief, Master Mechanic, General Inspector and Flight Engineer. He was thereafter caught up in the trend setting IAM labor strike that began. January 9, 1961. The final labor agreement resulted in end of the mechanic trained Flight Engineer and the onset of the pilot qualified Second Officer.

   The final labor agreement really opened an opportunity for Jack’s employment as a pilot. He completed the transition training and was qualified as a copilot/second officer. While flying copilot on the Boeing 720/320 Jack was assigned to Seattle for few years before returning to Minneapolis to take care of his Mother. While living at Prior Lake, MN, Jack met his soon to be wife Jolene Klober. The couple would eventually raise their family, son John and daughter Jayme at Prior Lake.

   As Jack’s pilot career progressed, he upgraded to captain on the Boeing 727. This would be his lasting crew position until retirement February 3, 1986.

   One of Jack's most exciting times as a pilot is when he was hijacked on May 14, 1976 on a trip out of Seattle. The man demanded to be flown to Mexico, however the pilots convinced him to agree to a stop in Reno to refuel. Police pretended to be the fueling operators, boarded the airplane and grabbed the hijacker before anyone got hurt.

   After retiring Jack spent ten years building his own airplane from scratch in the family garage. He flew it a few times and then sold his airplane. The joy of building was what it was all about, a lifetime interest spawned as a young boy building model airplanes. Jack was incredibly active with the family going on vacations, ski trips, and attending his children's many sporting events. After the children left home, Jack and Jolen retired to Hayward WI. Jack always loved the small-town lake life. They met many friends there and were active in many community events.

   Three years ago Jack his wife Jolene Schricker. Jack at his death was survived by his son John and daughter Jayme; grandchildren Seth, Taryn, Clare, Joe and John.

From the RNPA/Retired Northwest Pilots group comes this news with the passing of a much loved friend and respected co-worker retired Northwest pilot Captain Otto Everett Tessmer.  Captain Tessmer joined Northwest Airlines 02-12-1958.  Colleague and good friend Capt. Bill Day writes: “Captain Otto Everett Tessmer, age 88, died last Friday, November 27, 2020 in his beloved Alexandria, MN. There is an obituary posted at https://www.andersonfuneral.net/obituary/Otto-Tessmer  and a shorter version in the Minnesota Star and Tribune Dec. 2, 2020. There will be a pilot obituary posted on the RNPA website.  I flew with Otto Everett Tessmer each opportunity that came my way. In addition I got to know him well as fellow instructors in the DC-10 program. If Bill Carrothers were still with us today, he would be deep in grief. Ev Tessmer and Bill Carrothers had uncanny connections and a profound friendship throughout their lives. Bill Carrothers died in 2016. The family will have a private funeral service in Alexandria. Obituary:  Otto Everett Tessmer passed away peacefully in Alexandria, MN on Friday, November 27, 2020.

“Sweet Loveable Evy” (as he liked to be called) was born on April 27, 1932, in Alexandria Minnesota to Otto and Sofy (Haugdahl) Tessmer.  On April 18, 1959, he married Mary Jill Fordham. They raised a son, John, and two daughters, Paula and Karla.

 

His extensive flying career began in the Navy in 1954. Everett spent most of his Naval career instructing in Pensacola Florida. He claimed that his navy career saved him after two attempts at obtaining a college degree, one at the University of Minnesota and another at St. Olaf in Northfield, MN.  When asked why he left these institutions, he would reply, “I was not kicked out. Rather, I was asked to never return.”

 

After leaving the Navy, he was hired by Northwest Airlines in 1957 and retired in April of 1992.  He flew as Captain on the 727, 707 & DC10. During his 35 year career, he was a respected instructor and the FAA-designated Check Airman for orals and type ratings on the DC10. In 1970, he was elected by ALPA (Airline Pilots Association) to serve on the Master Executive Council at Northwest Airlines.  He retired as the number one seniority pilot on the DC-10.

 

When not working, Everett loved the game of golf, especially the grudge matches that included his late brother Bob, his son John and his nephews. One of his greatest golf achievements was playing Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Master’s, courtesy of his beloved niece Anne-Marie Dobbs.

 

Everett was best known for his marvelous sense of humor. He was given the title “The King of Wit” as he always had a hilarious comeback to any joke. However, he was not known for being handy around the house. For example, when asked by a neighbor who was fixing a boat motor to bring him a screwdriver, Ev promptly returned with vodka and orange juice.  It was 8:30 a.m.

 

Mostly, he loved his family. While gregarious and social most of his life, in his later years, all he wanted was to be near his children and grandchildren. He will be so greatly missed.

He is survived by his three children, John Tessmer, Paula Olhausen, and Karla Jones, and seven grandchildren, Allen, Laura and Bob Tessmer, Adam and Ashley Olhausen and Jackson and Sophie Jones, his brother Ken Tessmer and wife Tolly, and many adoring cousins, nieces, and nephews.

 

A private funeral service will be held Friday, December 4, 2020 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alexandria, MN. Inurnment will be at Kinkead Cemetery in Alexandria.This service will be live-streamed and recorded for family and friends to view from Ev’s obituary page on the Anderson Funeral Home website at noon on Friday.

 

A celebration of Ev’s fun-filled life will occur this summer in Alexandria.

Donald Ray Christy II of Commerce Township, passed away suddenly at 59 years on December 1st. Survived by his dearly loved children Spencer and Samantha, his loving mother Sandra, sister Cindy (Kevin) Furlong, and preceded in death by father Donald Ray Christy. Don was a successful pilot at Northwest/Delta Airlines for the past thirty years. Loved spending time with his kids, hanging out by his pool and taking walks with his dog, Django. Notification with the passing of retired Delta pilot Captain Martin Eugene Wilson Sr., age 78.  Captain Wilson joined Delta Air Lines 02-13-1970 and retired with Delta in 2002, based 030/ATL at the time of his retirement.  He is survived by his wife Bonnie, his children and his grand- and great grandchildren.

Obituary:  Martin E. Wilson, 78, of Doylesburg PA, passed away on Sunday, November 29, 2020 in UPMC Pinnacle West Shore Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was a retired commercial airline pilot with 32 years of service for Delta Airlines, a U.S. Air Force Captain piloting B-52s in the Vietnam War, and a graduate of the University of Georgia. Martin was a member of St. Luke Episcopal Church, Mechanicsburg, Path Valley Historical Society, and the Path Valley Lions Club. He grew up on a farm where they produced cotton, tobacco and turpentine, was an avid bird watcher, and was a longtime friend and neighbor of the Amish community.

Martin was born in Charleston SC to the late Joseph and Anna (Cobb) Wilson. He is survived by his wife of more than 38 years, Bonnie (Beisel) Wilson, children Martin E. Jr. of Atlanta GA, Susan Frances Bohan of Cumming GA, Gregory Dale Wilson of Denver CO, Sarah Elizabeth Ensminger of Mechanicsburg PA, Anne Marie Juba of Dillsburg PA, and Greta Wilson of Atlanta GA; siblings Joedy Wilson of Baxley GA and Daisy Wilson of Douglas GA; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held at his home 22135 Path Valley Rd., Doylesburg PA 17219 on Thursday, December 3, 2020 from 4 – 9 pm. A graveside service will be held on Friday morning December 4th at 10 am with military honors at St. John’s Cemetery at Peace Church, Mechanicsburg PA (Hampden Twp).
