USAF veteran, WA/DL Capt. William Clark Lovell Jr.

November 20, 1940 ~ November 23, 2020

 

Notification with the passing of retired Western/Delta pilot Captain William Clark Lovell Jr., age 80.  Captain Lovell joined Western Airlines 02-03-1969 and retired with Delta Air Lines in 2000, based 030/SLC at the time of his retirement.

He is survived by his wife Kristine and his daughter Kelly, plus many more dear family members.

Obituary :  William Clark Lovell Jr.

William Clark Lovell, JR, 80, of La Quinta, California, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2020.

 

Bill was born in Farmville, VA to William Clark and Marian Lovell. Growing up in Martinsville, VA, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing. After attending college at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, VA, Bill joined the United States Air Force and served in the Vietnam War.

 

In February of 1969, Bill was hired by Western Airlines, where he began his 30-year career as a commercial pilot. It was during that time that he met his wife, Kristine Parkhill, a then flight attendant, while they were both working for Western and based in San Francisco, CA. Their family grew to include two children, William and Kelly. In 1989, the Lovell family moved to Park City, UT, as Bill finished his flight service as a pilot for Delta Airlines, based in Salt Lake City. After retirement, Bill and his wife moved to La Quinta, CA.

 

When he was not in the air or spending time with his family, Bill could often be found at the golf course. He had an immense love and a deep respect for the game, and many of his closest friendships were forged on fairways. Bill was a natural teacher, and he often shared his knowledge and skill with younger players, including his children. Over the years, Bill considered himself fortunate to be an active member at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, The Palms in La Quinta, and Jeremy Golf and Country Club in Park City.

 

He will be remembered as a loyal friend, a loving husband and father, a jovial story-teller, and an exceptionally kind and generous man. Bill was often quiet and thoughtful, but those close to him knew him to have an incredible sense of humor, a contagious laugh, and a very big and tender heart.

 

In 2016, Bill was diagnosed with Advanced Prostate Cancer. He battled cancer quietly and bravely, aided and cared for by his wife. Bill is preceded in death by his son, Will. He is survived by his wife, Kristine, his daughter, Kelly, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. He will be missed very, very much.

DL Capt. Alva B. Truesdale

DL Capt. Alva B. Truesdale

July 5, 1935 ~ December 10, 2020

 

Information has come to our website posted by family members, this news with the passing of retired Delta pilot Captain Alva Benjamin Truesdale Jr., age 85.  Captain Truesdale joined Delta Air Lines 11-19-1962 and retired in 1995.  He was based ATL the majority of his career, then based 030/LAX in the later years prior to his retirement.  Family notes that Captain Truesdale had suffered with complications of Vascular Dementia.

USAF veteran, NWA Capt. Gene Lee Glenn

November 12, 1939 - September 25, 2020

 

Obituary :  Gene Lee Glenn

     Gene Lee Glenn, age 80, of Trussville, Alabama, died at home on September 25, 2020. Gene "Slatz" Glenn was born on November 12, 1939, in Trussville, Alabama, to George A. Glenn, Sr. and Jean Searcy Glenn. He attended Hewitt High School and was graduated in 1958. He married his high school sweetheart Patricia Ann Needham Glenn in 1960. In 1962 he was graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Having also completed the USAF ROTC program at Auburn University, he was commissioned in the United States Air Force.

 

     In 1963 Gene graduated from USAF pilot training and thereafter assigned to duty as an Instructor Pilot at Craig Air Force Base at Selma, Alabama, instructing in the T-33, T-37 and T-38 aircraft. In 1968 he separated from active duty and was hired by Northwest Airlines on April 08, 1968. During his NWA career Gene and flew the Boeing 707 series, 727, 747 and Douglas DC-10 aircraft, retiring as a Line Check Airman on the 747-200 in 1999. He logged over 20,000 flight hours and over nine million miles traveled.

 

Gene was a lifelong member of the Trussville First United Methodist Church and a forty-year member of the Pioneer Sunday School Class. He was a longtime Mason in the Georgiana Davis Lodge in Trussville.

 

Gene is survived by his wife of 60 years Patricia; his son Stephen B. Glenn, his daughter Sharon G. Orr, and his son David J. Glenn; Grandchildren Jonathan, Paul, Samson, Elizabeth, Emmeline, George and Arthur; and brothers George A. Glenn, Jr., William B. Glenn, Robert S. Glenn. He is preceded in death by his parents, George A. Glenn, Sr., and Jean S. Glenn, and by his sister, Glenda Gay "Sister" Glenn.

News has reached our group with the passing of Delta Golden Wings member retired Delta pilot Captain Douglas Trelling Rounds Sr., age 86.  Obituary below notes Captain Rounds’ military and aviation career.  Capt. Rounds is survived by his wife Bonnie along with their children plus their grand- and great grandchildren.

Obituary :    Douglas Trelling Rounds of Zebulon, Georgia flew West peacefully on his final flight December 9, 2020. He was 86 years old.

     Douglas (Doug) was born in Dowagiac, Michigan on June 3, 1934. At a young age Doug realized in order to be successful in life he would have to work hard to overcome some of the obstacles that he faced growing up. And that he did. Graduating from Holly High School in 1952 (with Honors) in Holly, Michigan where he was class president, he also excelled in all high school sports. Upon finishing high school, he even received offers from the Yankees and the Cubs for a baseball career. But since he was a young boy, Doug had a keen interest in airplanes and elected to pursue his dreams in aviation instead of baseball.

 

     After high school he attended Western Michigan College to receive his pilot’s license and ratings. In 1953 he enlisted in the United States Air Force serving a year before being RIF’d (reduction in force) and he was honorably discharged. 

 

    He was hired by Delta Air Lines December 3, 1956 and had a 38-year career with Delta as an airline pilot before he officially retired June 3, 1994. During his career with Delta, he flew every different type of airplane the airline owned from Douglas DC-3s to Boeing 747s. Not only was he a pilot for Delta, but also a Flight Instructor and Check Airman on ten of the twelve different types of airplanes he flew during his career. Doug was also a member of the Air Line Pilots Association and served on its Safety and Accident Investigation Committees for many years.

 

     His passion was aviation and he was a licensed pilot for 68 years, a licensed airplane mechanic (Airframe/Powerplant) for over 60 years with Aircraft Inspection Authority on his mechanic’s license for over 50 years.

 

     In his personal aviation life, he owned more than 50 different antique and classic airplanes while restoring/maintaining numerous aircraft. He was a respected aviation historian with several articles published. Doug served as a Director of the Antique Airplane Association (AAA) for 32 years, and Vice President of the AAA for 10 years. He was a member of the American Aviation Historical Society, the Early Birds, the Quiet Birdmen, the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA where he served as a judge for antique aircraft during the years 1975 thru 1977 at Oshkosh, Wisconsin), and many other aviation organizations. He built and owned the second oldest (1967) registered airport in Pike County, Georgia that still exists today.

 

    Doug served his local community in many ways by being on numerous committees such as Planning and Zoning for Pike County, the Kiwanis Club, the Elks Club, and he volunteered for numerous events in Pike County.

 

    Doug had a love for dogs, his farm, his airport, and antique cars, but most of all, he loved and cherished his wife Bonnie more than anything.

 

      Doug was preceded in death by his father Francis Charles Rounds, his mother Marjorie Rose Rounds, and his brother Norman Rounds.

 

     He is survived by his loving wife Bonnie of 67 years, his brother Don Rounds, daughter Leslie Ratliff (Eddie), daughter Tracy Sims (Herb), son Doug Rounds Jr (Mark), son Nathan Rounds (Linda), 6 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.

 

    A lyric from a famous songwriter comes to mind when Doug recently reminisced about his own past: “Through 86 years of perpetual motion, some of it was magic, some of it was tragic, but I had a good life all the way”. God Speed Captain Rounds, May Blue Skies and Tailwinds always be with you…….

 

A memorial service for Douglas Trelling Rounds will be announced at a later date.

NWA Capt. Robert W. Dickson

   Captain Robert ‘Bob’ Dickson passed away on July 04, 2020 at age 82. His wife Jeanne was at his side. Jeanne mentioned that was their favorite holiday, so leave it to Bob to go out with a “bang!” Bob had a series of health issues in the last few years, Parkinson’s, and pneumonia were the official cause of death.
 
    Bob was born to William Lucas and Dorothy Dickson on September 27, 1937. His father was well known for writing the Probate Code for the state of Oregon. He is survived by his older sister, Barbara Bell (Ross), his son Robert W. Dickson Jr, and nieces, nephews, and cousins. 
 
   Bob grew up on the lake in Lake Oswego, Oregon. He loved boating, water skiing, and swimming. Bob played high school football and winters found him on the ski team on Mt. Hood. He continued with the ski teams at the University of Oregon, joining the ATO fraternity and graduating with a major in Economics. He chose Air Force ROTC in college, explaining that he joined so he could fly instead of having to march in the Army.  

   After graduation Bob reported to Lackland AFB, TX for preflight training. Following preflight Bob was sent to Craig AFB, AL for (UPT) with the renown USAF Class 61-D. Upon earning his Air Force silver wings, Bob was assigned to SAC for B-52 training. He received his ‘check out’ and weapons training at Castle AFB, CA and was sent (PCS) to a permanent squadron at Fairchild, AFB, Spokane, WA.
 
   During the Cuban Missile Crisis Bob’s squadron was deployed to Ramey AFB, Puerto Rico. During this tense period SAC B-52 crews flew Defcon 2 airborne alerts from Ramey AFB loaded and pointed toward Russia.  
 
   Bob came out of the Air Force just in time for an interview with NWA. He was hired by NWA on August 02, 1965. He became a Second Officer on the Boeing 707 series at Seattle (SEA).  Bob flew the Orient for several years, which included Military Airlift Command (MAC) military charter flights. Thereafter he upgraded to copilot on the 720/320 out of SEA until an opportunity to fly Captain on the 727 in MSP.
 
     In early 1974 Bob and crew were snowed in at Milwaukee, WI. He was required to change rooms and the flight attendants offered to help him by carrying his bags etc. Behind them while he was checking in, a United cockpit crew came up and seeing this commented, “Guy, I think we’re flying for the wrong airline!”
 
   Amongst that crew was Flight Attendant Jeanne Klees and that meeting bloomed into a romance and a marriage in 1974. They flew together for several years and had agents deliver love notes when they were not flying together. They even made the St. Paul paper saying that you might want to be careful what you say to the Flight Attendant, because her husband may just be the Captain.
 
   Bob introduced Jeanne to healthy pursuits that were not so common to Minnesota such as sailing, mountain skiing, snorkeling – scuba diving all over the world. Bob kept a 37-foot Chewy Lea sailboat on Orcas Island, WA.
 
   Not one to stand quietly in the shadows, Bob was known as a facilitator. That included volunteer work with ALPA. Those who knew of Bob’s service as the NWA ALPA Hotel Chairman are grateful for the quality of our layover accommodations.
 
   Bob introduced Jeanne to healthy pursuits that were not so common to Minnesota, such as snorkeling and scuba diving.  Then they had a charter boat moored in Belize, for five years, and their final boat was a 48’ Juan Marie made in Finland. Home was in Bellevue, WA. 
 
   Bob retired in September 1997 and they moved to a boating/golf retirement community called Semiahmoo on the border of WA and B.C. They lived on their boat while they built their dream home on the water, sailed the islands, and in the winter enjoyed the warmth of Palm Desert.
 
As Bob’s health issues crept up and sailing became difficult, traveling on cruises was a better choice to see the wonders of the world, he never looked back.
