Word has reached us with news of the passing of retired Western/Delta pilot Captain Jim Gallagher, age 83.  Captain Gallagher joined Western Airlines 02-03-1969 and retired with Delta Air Lines in 1997, based 030/SLC at time of retirement.  He is survived by his wife Judy, his children and his grandchildren.

Obituary :  Jim Gallagher passed away peacefully at home on March 23, 2021 due to complications from a stroke. He was born on June 9, 1937 in Milwaukee, WI to Bernice Casper and George Kugel. He was adopted as an infant by James and Mary Gallagher and grew up in Green Bay with his siblings Judee and Michael. Jim graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1962 and was stationed in Dover, DE, Newfoundland, Canada, and Nashville, TN. In 1964, while shopping for a car in Washington, D.C. he met and married the love of his life, Judy Pier, of Shaker Heights, Ohio. They have been happily married for 56 years.

 

After leaving the Air Force in 1969, Jim joined Western Airlines and moved his family to Los Angeles, CA. There he joined the Lotus West car club and spent many weekends with Judy winning slalom races in his Lotus Super 7. Jim had an Illustrious barbershop singing experience. He sang in over 10 quartets singing with the Beehive Statesmen, BQPA, and Tri-W. He regularly attended the annual Harmony College convention to share his love of singing. Through these hobbies he made many lifelong friendships across the country. In 1982, Jim and Judy moved their family from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City. At age 60, Jim retired from Delta Airlines and spent the next ten years skiing at Solitude with the FOGS “as many days in the ski season as his age.” He loved the outdoor life in Utah, biking, hiking, and star gazing. Jim and Judy spent their marriage traveling to all the US states and over 50 countries. In their later adventures, they befriended a travel group and made many memories together. Jim was “Mr. Fix-It”, known throughout the community as the go to man for any problem.  He will be missed for his selfless support of his friends, neighbors, and children for all their house and car repairs.

 

Later in life, Jim was fortunate to be reunited with his birth mother, Bernice, and 3 siblings. Many happy trips and reunions resulted from this connection and filled Jim and his family’s hearts with more love than thought possible.

 

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Judy, of 56 years, his five children, Peter, David (Miriam), Debra, Daniel, and Katie Thomas (Chris), ten grandchildren, Robert, James, Ethan, Hailey, Lauren, Lindsay, Henry, Caroline, Sidney, and Ella. Jim is also survived by his siblings Jim Kugel (Kris), Joan Collins (Bob), Frank Kugel (Debbie), brother-in-law Philip Pier (Alice) and many nieces and nephews.

 

A celebration of Jim’s life will be on Thursday, April 15, 2021 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City.

Our website has received word with the passing of retired Delta pilot Captain Jerry Chapman, age 81.  Captain Chapman joined Delta Air Lines 03-22-1965 and retired with Delta in May 1997, based 031/JFK at the time of his retirement.  He is survived by his wife Ruth, his children and his grandchildren.

Obituary  : Gerald (Jerry) Dennis Chapman, 81, of Greenbank, WA, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 22nd, 2021. Jerry was born on August 5, 1939 in Abilene, TX. He was the beloved son of the late Alfred and Pauline (Allen) Chapman.

 

Jerry dedicated two of his late-teenage years to service in the 5th Marines before his love of flying took root. He learned to fly in the Fort Worth area and was soon working for a crop-dusting outfit. He enjoyed his early flying career which took him all around Texas and Oklahoma.

 

In 1965 Jerry was hired by Delta Airlines where he initially took to the skies in the DC-6. During his tenure as a pilot he resided in Georgia, Texas and New Hampshire. He flew domestically and internationally in a variety of aircraft such as the DC-7, DC9, L100, B757 and B767. In 1997, after 32 years of service, Jerry retired as a captain of the L10-11.

 

Jerry’s love of family, flying, adventure and travel continued throughout his retirement. He could be seen flying his twin Navion in the New Smyrna Beach, FL area and in later years his RV4 near Granby, CO.

 

Jerry is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Ruth Moeller Chapman, his son Eric, and daughter Heidi (Chapman) Goodwin. He has five wonderful (and sometimes mischievous) grandchildren: Maverick, William, Sebastian, Malia and Liam.

 

A service will be held for Jerry on Tuesday, March 30th at Trinity Lutheran Church 18341 WA-525 Freeland, WA. Friends and family are welcome to attend at 1:00 pm.

Obituary  :  MAJ ROLAND FRAGA U.S. Air Force, Ret.

USAF Major Roland Fraga, Ret., a 42-year resident of Boulder City, flew his final flight to Heaven on March 4th after a short battle with cancer. He was a loving husband to Peggy for almost 67 years. He is also survived by his son and best friend, Mark, of Carson City, NV, and his loving daughter, Karen Hayes (Dave), of Santa Rosa, CA. He has four grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his son, Ron, and daughter-in-law, Judy.

Roland (88) was born (2/17/1933) to Raulino and Agnes Fraga in Fort Bragg, CA. The family moved to Santa Rosa, CA, where Roland met his soul mate, Peggy, and graduated from high school. It was at this young age that he became passionate about flying. He earned his private pilot's license at the age of 18 and flew Cessna 120s and 140s and Stinson L5s. His military career, which included service in Korea and Vietnam, began at this time. When attending Santa Rosa Junior College in 1951 and 1952, he entered the US Navy Reserves. He entered the Air Force Aviation Cadet program in 1953 and flew the T6, T28, and B25. By 1954 he was on active duty in the USAF and stationed at Mather AFB flying T29s.

In April of 1954, Roland and Peggy married. They quickly had Ron and the family moved to Great Falls, MT, where Roland flew KB29s. While in Montana, Karen was born, and the family moved to RAF Sculthorpe in England. Roland flew KB29s and KB5OJs. The next stop was Travis AFB in Fairfield, CA, where Mark was born while Roland flew B52Gs. In 1966, Roland retired from active duty and served in the USAF Reserves for over seven years. He then began flying 707s, 747s, and A310s for Pan Am Airlines, and the family relocated to Connecticut. He became a Training Captain for Pan Am's 707s and 747s for 14 years. He flew line for a total of 27 years which included the last few months of his career at Delta Airlines where he was an A310 Captain.

As retirement neared, Roland had a packing crate delivered in October 1983 which was a Glasair Model 1 kit, named Baby Bird, which he built and completed in 1996. He continued to fly until his recent illness. Roland and Peggy moved to Boulder City in 1979. He enjoyed many pastimes including salmon fishing in Alaska with Peggy; hunting, fishing, and white water rafting with his sons; and later in life, frequent cruises to many places around the world with family.

A service will be held on April 6, 2021 at 9:20 A.M. at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City, NV 89005.

Obituary  :   Kenneth F Spiller

Olympia, Washington - Kenneth Frank Spiller was born and raised in Olympia, WA as the son and fifth child of Charles E. Spiller and Madge Kathryn Dolan Spiller. He attended St Michael's School and graduated from Olympia HS. As a member of the Zandell homestead pioneer family he was loved for his kindness and wit.

Fell in love with airplanes early in his life. He started building and flying model airplanes to flying small planes. He joined the Air Force to continue his passion of flying and to serve his country. He flew a B-47 while in the military. He was also a member of the Marine Corps reserve. After he completed his stint in the military he became a commercial airline pilot for Air West and Hughes Air West. At the end of his career Ken was piloting the big jumbo jets to the orient that included China and Japan for Northwest airlines.

Ken met Michaeleen while flying DC3. Ken was "smitten." Ken and Michaeleen Miles Spiller were married in 1963 and had 3 sons David (Ruth), Patrick and Brian (Hope). They lived in Federal Way WA, moved to Las Vegas, NV and then to Tennessee. They came back to Olympia area to retire.

Ken became known as "Poppy" to all of his grandkids who loved him dearly. He loved spending time with his family and seeing his grandkids.

He leaves his wife, Michaeleen Spiller, their sons, a sister, Sandra (Steve) Scott, grandchildren Jennifer (Bruce "Bob"), Michael Spiller, Tembra, Alanna, Danny, Olivia, Duncan and Erin.

Ken Spiller was preceded in death by his parents Charlie & Madge Spiller, his brother, Charles E Spiller Jr, his sister, Bernadine Spiller-Trones, brother John Michael (Mickey) Spiller, his in-laws Mike and Clarice Miles.

And many family members and friends: Paula & Al Colby - Alex & Bronwyn; Dalsan, Tracie & Ken (Suzanne), great nephew Dylan LeMere; Jerry & Pam Miles - Mathew, David & Jill; Linda & Walt Harris - Doug & Mark, Doug & Nancy Miles -Austin (Hannah).

Obituary  :  Michael Robert Juhl, 57, of Dallas, Texas, passed away on December 14, 2020, after a 16 month battle with ALS.

 

Mike loved his idyllic childhood in the small town of Dike, Iowa and often said those were the best years of his life. He told many stories of playing with his army men in the sandbox and working in the school shop with his dad. He wanted those, who touched his life in Iowa, to know that he loved and appreciated you.

 

After graduating from Iowa State University, Mike joined the United States Air Force and began his journey to becoming a commercial airline pilot. He served our country in Desert Storm flying C-130s where he earned the Air Medal for meritorious service. After leaving the Air Force, Mike was offered a position with Delta Air Lines and spent 29 years doing something he passionately loved: flying the Boeing 757/767. He even had a “signature move” in those extremely soft, smooth landings in which he took great pride.

 

Mike Juhl was the “fun” uncle, dad, friend and husband. He was known to laugh in a movie with wild abandon and if he told you a story, you made sure to give him a wide berth for his waving hands and arms he used for emphasis. He loved a thrill and if he took a spill over the handlebars of his mountain bike or down the mountain while skiing (something he called a yard sale) it was with a great badge of honor. It made for a good story to tell later with those waving arms. Passionately he loved his son, Mason, and considered him his best friend. He taught great lessons of life, love, work, and design and was so proud of the man Mason has become. Their bond was admirable and their laughter abundant. The other love of his life was his wife, Elizabeth. They met on a blind date in 2011 and Mike would later tell the story that when he saw her pass the window to the restaurant, life turned into slow motion with the song “Dream Weaver” playing in the background. He would say to her “I love you to the moon, Baby”! Although ALS stole from him and tortured him, he still managed a smile for everyone. He wanted his family to know, “I have loved every moment of my life and I’m glad each of you were a part of it. Thank you for giving me your love and letting me love you...I LOVE OUR FAMILY!”

 

Mike is survived by his much loved wife Elizabeth, son Mason, step daughter Caroline House, and his faithful dog Riley, all of Dallas, TX; parents Richard and Joann Juhl, Dike, IA; sister Connie (Dan) Vella, Canton, MI; brother David (Julie) Juhl, Des Moines, IA; along with many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. At Mike’s request, his ashes will be spread in two of his favorite places: Breckinridge, Colorado and under his favorite tree in the front yard where he can forever admire the house he designed. Due to the limitations of gatherings, a service will be held at a later date.
